Sam Speed I think the mayor was convicted of corruption, not anything to do with the levees. The bastard was probably solely responsible for the order to confiscate guns and deserves to be sodomized numerous times each day, for the duration of his sentence, for putting the people of his city in a position of weakness at the hands of roving savages.

Sam Speed There were 2 different floods. One in Louisiana in 1927 and then Katrina. Newman wrote this song about the flood in 1927. I did cartwheels in my living room when I heard about Ray Nigen going to prison. Serves him right that he is serving time. Crook! The NRA has an incredible video of the police taking away peoples weapons and leaving them completely defenceless. It is chilling and needs to be seen by all Americans.

For those not musically privileged, Randy Newman plays Gospel just as naturally as Ray Charles did. It might not be the goal per ce but it comes out anyway and I appreciate it. No this song isn't about human suffering in the face of nature, or at least not just nature - read the book Rising Tide, that flood didn't need to be as bad as it was in Louisiana, the army corp of engineers dynamited the levies, not to mention that all the dams that Coolidge was building across the midwest were taking sediment deposits away from Louisiana coast line and making the wetlands erode more rapidly, THIS SONG IS BEAUTIFUL AND SUBVERSIVE!!!

If the government is corrupt and infrastructure has suffered, then construction has not been done well. He said nothing regarding the skills of builders though. Since you've acknowledged that the infrastructure has suffered, and Newman never pointed his finger at a specific cause for the poor construction, I don't see what you have to be disappointed about.

It's Aaron Neville, not Arron. Randy Newman delivers a song too. And, surprise of surprise, he wrote them too. I still remember the first time I heard "Sail away." I think it was 1972. The mixture of fake promise and sadness was an awakening. "Louisiana 1927" is the best song on "Good old boys."

I agree, I've just recently "discovered" him (I'm 23 years old) and all I knew of him before was from comedic parodies (Family Guy, Mad TV etc...) which made me laugh, but his music, and most importantly, I think, is his songwriting. Newman. Pure genius. Funny when Aron Neville covered this song he replace the lyric, "Cracker" with this poor Farmer's Land. People have accused Randy of being a bigot, which is ridiculous, like when short people were offended by the song, until Randy stood up. Then the offended little ones began to appreciate the beauty of Randy's satirical nature.

Great singer. Hmm. What makes a great singer? It was said of Frank Sinatra that his greatness was his ability to deliver a song. What that means is the phrasing, the way emphasis is varied, inflections of voice, emotion, "soul." Dylan delivers many times the number of songs than Sinatra ever did, and they are songs he wrote.

Randy Newman is famous because his songs assume narrators; it's not Randy singing the song, it's someone affected by the flood. They would not make the connection between Hoover and a fat engineer, nor see anything but government failure in the relief efforts.
@Bimkovitz17 жыл бұрын
It's a bit jolting how misunderstood Newman is. People either think he's a guy who just sings about what he sees (because of some off-the-wall Family Guy reference) or some racist, southern asshole. It's jolting because apparently irony and satire have been completely lost on todays society.
