Randy's story is the story of America's mobile homeless.

When I first met Randy, long before I started recording video, he told me about how he lived a normal life and then ending up with only the clothes on his back. I didn't know until this interview it was because of a bad divorce. Listening to Randy speak reminded me of when LAPD illegally gave me a half hour to leave a house I was renting. They would not even allow me a moment to say goodbye to my dog. Situations like what Randy talks about do happen, and they can be devastating.
Randy was broken down and ended up homeless. "I hated God, I hated life, I hated everything. I was living the American Dream", Randy's words probably hits home to far too many people these days.
Randy's story is the story of America's mobile homeless. Luckily, he found St. Vincent de Paul and was able to get some dignity back. Randy started to volunteer, which helped build back his self-esteem. There is no magic pill to getting out of a crisis except helping others until you can help yourself again.
Today, Randy parks his RV with St. Vincent de Paul "Overnight Parking Program" [bit.ly/leOpnH] where they have built mutually beneficial relationships with business owners. I interviewed the program manager and you can learn more here bit.ly/mBNLTT
I love Randy's wish of helping others, especially those who may have given up on themselves.
Special thanks to St. Vincent de Paul www.svdp.us

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as KZbin, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Does women in the States have all their right? Randy sounds like a good nice man. Trying his best to make wife happy and yet still it isnt enough. A man who goes to church and helps with community. Bought a house, feed the families. We would be honoured to have a man as Randy, working husband, having a roof above our heads and meals daily. We are considered bless but most men over here put their interest first, familiy wise comes later. We have to repeatedly ask to buy groceries. Different countries, different laws n system.

This is a very dark chapter in American history, I'm afraid by design. Did you know in Poland the police actually feed the homeless as standard procedure? They have these undergound tunnels with steam pipes running through them & the homeless live there. The police drive out with large containers of soup & feed them.

We should have had UBI - Universal Basic Income, since the 60s if not sooner. History will record this as we know of the evils of early 20th century USA capitalism - they thought 12 hour 6 day work weeks and child labor was normal, as did slaveholders before them!!

I wanted to hear more from him. His story tells how fragile our personal economic existence is. Just with coronavirus the homeless here in Philadelphia have free run of the streets. People were living right on street corners and in the foyers of businesses. Not just sleeping at night, but ALL DAY LONG... One guy was using a shopping chart as his sofa/bed - right on the street corner as people walked by! I called the cops, they said because of covid-19 they will do NOTHING about it! Heaven help us if there’s war!

@macbuff81
@macbuff81 5 жыл бұрын
I like that he's spending his time creating a garden. It looks really beautiful. Tiny homes in combination with small farms so that the residents can be as self-sufficient as possible I think would a great approach. Of course mental health and drug avoidance programs/services would need to be provided as well. However, by creating self-sufficiency the costs would be lowered and, hopefully, crime and violence reduced. I'm not anti-capitalist. I own a property myself and believe in fair regulations and laws that protect both the tenant and landlord. I also was a tenant once and the leasing company utterly abused their position by raising rent by more than 20 percent per year simply because they could. That's not a sustainable model. Yes, the goal of a corporation is to make money. However, unfettered greed will destroy the system as a whole. Sensible regulation is necessary.

I can relate. My wife hasn't kicked me out--yet. There's no work for this carpenter, even though I still have my shop and tools. The wife thinks I should find other work. I ask-- so would they hire me at the deli? There are no positions there, and the pay is minimum. People quit often because the boss has no patience. My wife blames me. She says the kids won't come over because I talk about reality and that's an uncomfortable topic for them. They prefer their mother's view of the world.

Randy sounds like a good man, just completely broken, understandably, by what his ex-wife did to him, I wish you all best Randy. It reminds me of a man I was talking to many years ago, he told me his wife told him to leave so he grabbed a portable radio from their house, walked out the door and never went back. At that time, in the mid 90s, he hadn't seen his son, who was only a baby when he was told to leave for 14 years.

I understand switching roles/households when he decided that he could no longer raise the children. But allowing at least 3 months for this transition and giving him 1 vehicle would have been a better moral Law, or moral compass from his ex wife. This is a perfect example for only keeping your name filed for what you own and a prenuptial agreement.

Make this simpler: EVERYONE should be housed/SHELTERED one way or another, in one form or another (a room, house, apartment). But should that housed person have to PAY for it, or should it be paid by SOMEONE/SOMETHING ELSE (Example: government) assuming that housed person is ABLE BODIED/PHYSICALLY HEALTHY and can work/have a job and earn money. So yes, I AM saying homeless people should at least be put into any kind of shelter. The only issue is: SHOULD THAT SHELTERED PERSON PAY FOR THAT SHELTER.

Fart Box I'm not sure what state you're in but in Washington it's not that easy but def check the laws before you sign anything. There's postnups and marriage agreements (not the same) if you want to cover yourself more. There are big benefits to being married to the right person but you don't have to put yourself in a precarious situation to do it. I just don't want anyone to be alone in their old age bc they were afraid of marriage.

Umm, this is for everyone, for a Next Time, situation. QUESTION your Public Servants, by simply asking: 1) As I am man and the Public; so are you here in an official capacity? The Answer will be most likely Yes. 2) As I am man and the Public; so is this matter of a Legal Nature? The Answer will be most likely Yes. 3) As I am man and the Public, along with performing my Due Diligence; so do you have the Legal Documentation available for my reading and inspection? NOW - the Answer will start to waiver from - Yes, as they maintain the position you are, somehow questioning them and their alleged Authority. NOTE: If ANY Public Servant is ASKING you to perform, then they are only under Colour of Law, and will start yelling, scream and threatening. 4) As I am man and the Public, along with performing my Due Diligence; so do you have your Badge with Number, Police Credentials and your Business Card available for my reading and inspection. The Answer will be most likely No and yelling with threats will proceed. NOTE: Its part of their Duties, to properly identify themselves, upon request - by showing you ALL three! The Police are authorized to lie, within the performance of their job to Preps, Suspects, Persons of Interest, Subjects, Offenders, etc., but NOT to man. 5) As I am now fearful for my safety; so you do know that this matter stops and I do require your Superior to appear immediately? NOTE: Do NOT let your Public Servants get one over on you, yes and especially when your Homeless!
