Always been into lifting but you've inspired me to start running. Now that has led to me getting my first bow and hoping to go on my first hunt this year. Always wanted to hunt but the military lifestyle made it difficult. Now I'm out and looking forward to it! Thanks for the inspiration Cam!

@@Prim3e I got a Mathews TRX 38. I’ve already switched to 80% mods, CBE trek pro sight and dipped it in Origin Raptor so it’s coming together nice. I’ve been using a back-tension release to help eliminate anticipation and “target panic.” It’s addicting for sure!

Good stuff Cam! Although few can shoot 90lbs.. I'm having similar dilemna dialing in my setup and was being ignorant to the fact that a few turns back on the limbs could be a win-win! Also you're last video has me eyeing those carni-fours, but I really like the Valkyrie blood eagles too and they are local to us in Oregon!!

I think its very interesting after being into archery for 40 years or so how the subject of heavier poundage bows makes a full circle. When i was in my early twenties i shot a Darton at 72 pounds at 65 percent let off and these days most bows have that 80 percent plus let off. To be honest i shot my 65 percent much better than a new Hoyt i had in 2012. I havent really found one that i like to shoot in some years. Cool to see the long shots...keep up the great shooting.

More point weight is always ideal. It shifts the balance forward, eliminating inconsistencies on the back end, especially with the wind. Also, a heavier point seems to have better penetration for me. I actually prefer 140gn for my hunting rig, but my tournament bow likes 120 because USA Archery limits draw to 60lbs

Love the vid Hanes! But could you or someone in the comments tell me what’s the pro n cons of having a heavier arrow?
@someoneyouknow96
@someoneyouknow96 11 ай бұрын
Penetration. Basically mass keeps moving through the target once the target is hit. A lighter arrow won’t have the weight to pass through an elk. The heavier arrow will. Elk hunters usually hunt with heavy arrows.

I’m not convinced these bows are engineered to tolerate the higher poundage’s. I just had the bearings of the top cam on my Ventum 33 Pro (82 lbs) come apart at full draw. It was so dramatic I stopped and slowly let the bow down, all the time waiting for the bow to blow up. Seriously oh shit moment. I’ve shot my RX7 at 70 lbs a lot more with no issues…

A 540 gr arrow would be considered heavy for most of us but isn't heavy for 90 lbs. That would be similar to shooting 420 grains at 70. That seems to be money for your draw weight.

Problem is the faster your setup the more tuning issues you run into. With heavier poundage you can run a heavier arrow @ preferable speeds around 280 fps that will actually shoot out further due to retained momentum. This means even though your arrow is heavier you may actually be able to touch out to the same yardages as the lighter arrow but have more kenetic energy and more penetration.

Why does anyone shoot FMJ’s? They are super heavy gpi. 250 spine is 11.5 gpi. Let’s say you want to shoot ~550 grains with a 250 spine arrow, 4 fletch, and 28” arrow length. With a 5mm fmj you’re getting an FOC around 12%. That’s assuming no wraps on the back end of the arrow (which would lower FOC) With a 5mm Victory Rip TKO you have a gpi of 8.9 instead of 11.5. Which allows you to add about 75 grains to the front of the arrow for the same total arrow weight of 550 grains. This gets you to an FOC of 18.5%. With this increase in FOC pushing the center of pressure that much further behind the center of mass, you could lose a fletch and go to 3 fletch without losing any stability compared to the FMJ build (because the lever arm utilized by the fletchings is so much more efficient with an FOC north or 18% vs 12%). This would reduce the weight on the back end by about 7 grains and get the FOC to 19.4%.
