I'm 59 and had never owned a gun until about a year ago. I bought the Talo 5-inch edition of the 686 Plus and absolutely love it. It's the only gun I have now or ever care to have. I open carry and so the 5-inch barrel makes that a little easier. This gun will be just as useful in any real-life self-defense situation as any of those $5000 guns you alluded to.

@@thetexasgunvault it does. I have it sighted in with colt defense by DoubleTap. It's a 158gr jhp load rated out of a 6 inch barrel at about 1470fps. So I'm probably about 1400fps(haven't had a chance to run over the chronograph yet), which is plenty enough to be effective. It's accurate enough to hunt 50 yards and closer, and will definitely stop an attacker. I'm getting about the same speed as the guys shooting the 125gr bullets, but quite a bit heavier so energy jumps dramatically!!! The recoil definitely let's you know that it's there, but I shoot a lot of 44 mag so it's pretty controllable for me. I can shoot about as fast as most 9mm guys and keep them all center mass, while running about double the energy.

It definitely is; quite intimidating looking, really!... I have the standard 6-shot 6" model - and I notice that I always get a reaction of awe (even fear) from it, from other people at the range. 😆 Obviously it's a fairly large, long-barreled gun - much more so than the small 9mm semi-autos that most people shoot... But this shouldn't discourage me from shooting it though; it's one of the best revolvers I own.

@@carlosmorris4510intimidating is the Ruger Redhawk 44 mag with a 7.5 or 9.5 inch barrel!!! The Smith 629 or 29 in the 5 inch or bigger is really intimidating as well
@Wildwestwrangler7 ай бұрын
Between the 6 or 4 I'd ask what you're going to do more with it.if you're gonna carry it out on the farm or hunting more then I'd go 6 inch, but if you're gonna EDC and pack it around town or more home defense than anything I'd go with the 4 inch. 4 inches is about the minimum where you still get decent ballistics out of the 357 mag round. Find a round like underwood 158gr xtp for example and it's loaded to 1500fps out of a 6 inch Ruger gp100. So, out of a 4 inch depending on your individual gun you're gonna get between 1350fps and 1420fps. That's plenty even if you want to just pack it occasionally when hunting and try a shorter range shot. It'll still be very effective. I've seen where that load in a 6 inch Smith with a perfect barrel cylinder gap and perfect forcing cone and barrel grabbed 1520fps with that 158gr xtp from Underwood. That's getting into some hard hitting territory!!! That's over 800ftlbs of muzzle energy, and you have 7 of them!!!

I just got my first 686. I went with the 686+ Talo 3-5-7 Edition. It has a 5 inch barrel, an unfluted cylinder, wood grips and it’s 7 shot. I was surprised how dirty it was, new from the factory. The grips that came on it aren’t the best fit for my hand; so a set of Hogue G10 grips are on order. Having a 5 inch barrel there are less holster options. I ended up ordering a Masc Holster and a new front sight; the HiViz tritium and fiber optic combination. With my aging eyes, this will be a game changing upgrade.

Replaced rear sight blade with shorter one. But for a 6" 686, to take advantage of the better ballistics, I'd stick to a 6-shooter. Even if you don't handload, there are some very potent loads from companies like Double-Tap, Underwoods and Buffalo Bore more reflective of original .357 Magnum loads, vs mainstream ammo makers having to water-down .357 Magnum from the 5-shot and ultra lightweight carry revolvers.

@thetexasgunvault Other way around, actually. The lock company bought Smith and Wesson and saved them from financial failure. Their previous owners (Tomkins from the UK) were facing a series of lawsuits that were asking for over half of the company's total asset value. They made the Clinton agreement to extricate themselves from that liability, and then the boycotts began, cutting their sales in half. Foreseeing doom, Tomkins sold the company for almost 1/10th of what they paid for it to SafT Hammer, who also shouldered responsibility for the agreement and lawsuits while trying to keep as much of the staff as possible. Smith was dead in the water, either at the hands of sue happy citizens or boycott driven prospective gun owners interpreting their survival decision as selling out. The locks are still in the guns because that company is the only reason the guns are still being made, and that lock prevents future liability suits. The company now has 5x the total assets it did 20 years ago because SafT hammer kept them alive.. Here's a source from '01. I wish more people knew the whole story. thedailyrecord.com/2001/05/14/british-owner-sells-smith-wesson-to-arizona-company/
@PANICBLADE3 ай бұрын
@thetexasgunvault He's incorrect. It was the SafT Hammer Corporation that bought Smith and Wesson in 2001, not the other way around. Truth is, Smith was staring down the barrel of total financial failure one way or the other, either at the hands of numerous lawsuits from the public, or from the boycott if they made the Clinton agreement, which would extricate them from the lawsuits. When the UK company Tomkins bought Smith in 1987, it was for 113 million. When SafT bought Smith, it was for 15 million (not a typo). The amount of damages they were facing from the lawsuits was 53 million, and the total assets of the company added up to 97 million. You can do the math. The outcome we have now is one of the only scenarios where Smith and Wesson survives at all. That's why the lock isn't going anywhere. Not only did the company that made the lock and the lock itself save Smith from certain doom, but the company is more lucrative and more productive now than ever, despite residual lock protesting.

Just an amended comment. The 7 round version here is not acceptable for competition as you are only allowed a specific number of rounds for each series in the competition. And having the extra round in the cylinder, is a safety issue when the Range Officer clears the shooter between series. If anyone reading my comments and have issue with them. I will be happy to explain further. But remember here in the real world of Oz, handgun ownership is for competition and not for personal protection. That is why we have police.👍

@@Sugleknug In a match that has several serials of 6 rounds, you are only allowed to load six. If your revolver holds 7 or 8, and you load all cylinders and fire them. You will have put to many rounds on target. Which is against the rules. And if you have live rounds left in the cylinder, it creates issues with the RO, in clearing the range between serials. And if you just load the 6 rounds, and have empty spots in the cylinder, it just leads to confusion for the shooter and the RO. Whoever thought a 7 round cylinder was a good idea. Probably the same chap who invented WSSM ammo. Cheers who ever you are.

I was in law enforcement for 9 years and trust me when I say they will be there as fast as possible, but will not get in between you and the perp, or get there in any meaningful time frame. I'm assuming "oz" references Australia and is a place with strict handgun ownership. First, try to get that fixed and second have a shotgun or rifle ready to go instead which actually are superior home defense weapons but can't be easily carried or concealed. The first thing to consider when arming yourself is mindset, then learn the rules of engagement, then do what you can to achieve readiness. Don't be a soft target, once criminals sniff that out, you're on top of the list.
