As others have said it could be the injectors gummed up. Before you pull those out I would disconnect the fuel return pipe at the pump, stick it in a jar or milk bottle and check that fuel is getting right round the fuel rail and back to the tank when you turn the ignition on. Then you know the injectors are getting fuel under pressure. After that, check the injectors are getting 12 volt pulses with a multimeter or test lamp when you crank it. If both of these checks are OK then an injector clean could be on the cards. I have to say this channel is one of the best car channels on here and so much better than Wheeler Dealers! Good luck to you Rob and I can't wait to see this very rare RR restored and back on the road.

Very interesting as I have one of these, 4.6 with a gas conversion, been standing for various periods with problematic restarts. My guess would be seized injectors, good advice to check fuel pump pressure and injector pulse (noid), possibly replace half the injectors, alternate firing, once it is running on four culinders the others might free up. Very much enjoy your completely honest videos and share your pain!

The LPG system cuts the power supply to the injectors, use a Power Probe to check for injector pulse. If it runs for a bit then cuts out and you see an injector pulse at first crank, it is normally the early type security system immobilising the engine.

Hi rob you need to check that you are getting an injection pulse. You can use a noid light if you have one or use a test light to check for the injection pulse. If you are getting injection pulse , check fuel pressure is up to spec. I would guess about 50psi. If you have fuel pressure and you have spark and you are getting an injector pulse, one would presume you have blocked injectors. When you pulled the plugs after trying to start it were they all wet with fuel? If the plugs were all wet with fuel. ( I'm sure they were not) . I would check valve timing. I'm sure this is not a valve timing problem and is indeed fuel delivery. Good luck and great video as always.

Things I would check: Check voltage at ignition coil (some coils run on 9 volts or so, and have a ballast resistor that can go bad). Check / clean inside distributor cap (if it has one). Remove injectors and have them cleaned + clean out injector rails. Check injector plugs - one pin is normally 12v, the other pin should show an earth pulse from ecu when cranking. The last thing I can think of would be a compression test. I love a bit of fault diagnosis. I hope that helps.

Mine did this a couple of times. Very frustrating as several things have the same symptoms. Have you checked the ECU and injection relays? They both need to be working. I’d be surprised if it’s the LPG system as it should be starting on petrol anyway. But seeing as you’re ripping it out anyway no loss. Once mine did this as the battery was low, enough to turn over fine but not spark. Other times was the fuel pump (I put a new one in in August, and it failed last month!). Will have to read back through my notes to see if I did anything else to it. I suspect the surface rust on the sill will be a hole if you poke it with a screwdriver. Thought mine was surface. It wasn’t, haha. Good luck. I’ve subscribed.

I reckon, if there is spark, then this would give it a kick but it sounds as though no fuel being delivered by the injectors so it would only run a few revolutions. You guys have got the right idea, because with these old school engines it's either spark and timing, or fuel pump and injectors, that cause starting problems. But in this case it could well be the bodged LPG system or the rat that snapped, pinched, shorted or nibbled a wire. Or maybe a ground wire has come loose or rusted away? The motor spins, there's fuel in the tank and juice in the battery, so you will succeed in your efforts. Good luck!

Great work gents. I think there is a solenoid that switches between the gas and petrol feeds. If that was stuck, you may get fuel out of the pipe but not to the injectors. I would take out an injector and put it in a bottle a crank it over. You should get a mist of spray come out. Also not sure you can swap ECUs as the engine in the disco has different sensor maps so while it may plug in, it will not see all the right info from the sensors.

Rob youre on the right road with the injectors, They are prone to sticking shut, or gumming up if left unused, especially the length of time that has been standing. Also the air flow meters stick & corrode on the contact tracks from standing too. Common on Bosch & Lucas AFM. (They dont like starting on half throttle btw.) Depending on how bad the injectors are, just as a test/temporary, one of you hold turn the engine over while the other taps the injectors with a decent flat blade screwdriver, this can "wake them up", just to prove the point. They will need quite a tap & being plastic will probably get damaged, but it can work. This is common occurence with used / scrap yard engines that have been stood a long time or arent sealed to the atmosphere. Good luck guys.

But otherwise check every wire on the loom for cuts etc . And get the lpg system out of there fully! I'm sure it's either ignition or the lpg system. Also definitely worth checking the stepper motor and oiling it (the thing with a 4 pin plug going into it at the back of the plenum)

Great work lads ... Just be very careful with that gas tank. On mine the tank had an electric open / close valve so the pipes to the gas heater valve at the front from the tank were empty but the tank had a lot of LPG in it. Somewhere in that LPG loom (on the dash?) will be a switch to cut in the LPG and switch out the petrol injectors. It will also have its own ECU !! Some systems just 'add' LPG and some replace the petrol . In all the ones I have done before the gas is switched out until the coolant temperature gets to a set point so the gas can be heated by the coolant system and turn liquid gas into ... gas! It should start on petrol first but it may be its just stuck in 'LPG mode'. While its in bits I would get rid of the extra pipes that feed the LPG heater from the coolant system and get it all back to LR factory. On mine it was simply 2 x 'T' pieces in the car heater circuits and I replaced with 2 straight 5/6 connectors You will have to remove the gas injectors from the inlet manifold and wind in plugs (or use a standard manifold) so the engine ECU has correct pressures (ie it can check ambient pressure vs manifold pressures) They are a shit idea mate thats a fact ...
@graemew70015 жыл бұрын

Am with you on this one Rob. Chris. After seeing the crud in the pump and lines its very likely the injectors will be in the same state .

So very nearly firing up too. Not for the want of trying, you've put a hell of a lot of work into that. Can't wait to hear the old girl burst into life again.

You need at least 30 ps fuel pressure coming up to the fuel rails/ injectors. I would also recommend a compression test.

Fair play lads you tried your best for us its more frustrating to hear it nearly start than not at all coz you know where to try next hope its the injectors then you've eliminated everything... well done Chris for using your motor as a spares just to get it running can't wait to find out the reason for the non firing.... best of luck lads love the channel 👍

Take the air filter of and throw carb cleaner down the intake Rob. You got spark cus it's caughing my money's on fuel and where it's been standing it just needs to fire up. The cold start etc probably is not working properly. Get the carb cleaner down it and I'd be tempted to pull the fuse or disconnect the fuel pump encase it's fluding it. Just fire it up on the cleaner and get it running pulse it in to keep running then connect pump back up. You should be able to run it without mas flow and cold start sensor plugged in as well. Shame I'm not more local love to help you get that running. Love the non starts after years of sitting makes you go back to basics especially when others are dependent on obd lol. Nice video just wanna see your face when it starts and see how she runs

It’s a long time since I worked on one of these engines, but I do remember having the same problem that turned out to be the cold start injector

Nice project Rob, I used to mess about with my old mans motors with him, Jags, Granadas, old Vauxhalls. Just a thought, check the earthing strap to cars bodywork especially if bad corrosions set in.

Hi Rob, probably the injectors are seized, I have had that on a TVR with Rover V8 that had been standing for years. Also another thing to watch out for when it does start is that it will probably have no oil pressure due to being standing so long. You will have to prime the oil pump, usually done by removing the distributor and using a drill with an adapter. Good luck, cant wait for next upload.

Steve Pike at first the pressure was low as the lite wouldn’t go out but now we have cranked it so much the pressure is up and the lite goes out 👍
