ANDREW: Talk with Leigh Darling (aka Grizzly & Bear)re: 4 wheel campers. I was looking at one myself. When lowered , they don't act like a sail as NA campers do, and they are not Top Heavy either. My personal situation was why I did not purchase, + the fact that I deal with COLD climates, and canvas( been winter camping 4 years) isn't " my cup of tea" .

It’s not the best solution but it’s my best solution 4WheelPopUpCampers. Woodland, Ca. I go back and forth Van/Troopy or proper camper. 🤷‍♂️ It has a place to go and get warm or get out of wind.

There are already hundreds of build videos on KZbin, and while seeing your own perspective when building a vehicle is fascinating, I don't think there's anybody else doing the trips you're doing and presenting them in the way you're presenting them. So yes, I'm much more interested in following your trips than in yet another build video :)

I mostly agree with this sentiment, but I think as someone just getting into to 4x4ing and particularly touring / overlanding, it’d be good to see it in a different vehicle (maybe cheaper / more accessible vehicle). I really liked the episodes in the DMAX, because it showed that I didn’t have to have a fancy setup. It’s not about the vehicle sure, but for many, it’s what they start thinking about when they want to undertake remote touring. 70 series land cruisers are very expensive and out of reach for most people.

If I can put my 2 cents in: I have other KZbin channels I follow that do car restorations. I love them. I look out for the weekly videos and I watch the hell out of them. I came to this channel primarily to watch your expeditions. I came across it and I thought, yes, this guy can show me his journeys and he can do it well. I love the Canning series - I hung out for it every week! If a Troopy is the best all rounder that can get you out to Africa to produce more fantastic content: just do it. I like the look of the Troopy anyway. In summary: keep doing what you're doing. Use a Troopy. Let us live vicariously through you! Spiel done.

Hi Andrew. It‘s actually not about you building vehicles. It‘s about you using these vehicles on trips. That inspires me and others doing trips with their own vehicles because we can see what works and how it works. Greetings from Germany.

Ok @4xoverland how about something a bit left field, how about a 4*4 van like the Mercedes Sprinter van, Iveco Daily or Ford Transit 4*4. Would give you loads of room on the inside and be practical. Downsides would be how offroad capable are they?

I’d love to watch a build series by you… on a budget of let’s say $30k including vehicle purchase to still achieve the same trips you do (not as extreme as Canning Stock), but the weekend jaunts you occasionally do eg with Gwyn (not saying that Gwyn has to be present, but that would be great fun too!) Also… another twist. Considering all you know now, and having done this with your children since they were young… it would be interesting still to see a budget 4/5 seat build. Love your work ASPW! [EDIT] - I am aware of the Nissan Xtrail build you did with your son in law 🙂… really left me pining for more

With all do respect. I have been working on building my Overland truck for several years. From where I sit your budget IMHO needs to be doubled at a minimum. You will spend a grand on tires alone. Any 4x4 you get 2nd( or more) hand will require a ton of maintenance. Wheel bearings ,seals brake pads/rotors/ calipers/ fluid, flex lines, Diff oil, etc. Now add basic engine service. In Au. radios are mandatory if I am correct. What will that cost? I can continue, but I hope you get my point.

I agree the vehicle isn’t the most focus of the show, but the vehicle contributes to the atmosphere of the trips. We are adventure loves and car lovers and I know I would really value a fresh vehicle. We all know Land Cruisers are great cars, but it’s been done to death, my suggestion would be for the single cab option but would it be a suggestion to use a Defender single cab or Mercedes G single cab instead?

Big fan of the channel! always inspiring and love what you do! Most overland vehicle builds on youtube are about how much 'off the shelf' gear you can find and bolt to a vehicle. I like your approach of some custom items, comparisons and reason for doing it and then actual footage of testing it in the wild. the 70 series would always be one of the very best vehicles for africa travel. die hard fans like me won't mind if you build another one. can't wait to see what it is!

The quality of the videos, with mesmerizing sceneries, amazing colors, and unbelievable sounds, really transports me to those places. It's almost as if I'm there with you. I understand your little dilemma with the Range Rover, I would be gutted to be apart from it, so I wonder, what if you ship it to Africa ($$$?) and use it for the Africa trips? Back to basics, challenge yourself to "what is the bare minimum to overland". New Suzuki Jimny, more interior room than a dual cab ute. Add 270 awning, ground/stretcher tent, battery and fridge. I'd like to see how you overcome the impractibility during the trip as you find them. I think that would actually provide you with a challenge, since you know that a 70 series will do everything you need. If it doesn't work out, you can sell it without losing money on the asset.

This was one of the most interesting talks/videos you have done Andrew, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Some comments/ideas if I may... In my humble opinion there have been two standouts on your channel that I have to admit I have watched over and over. These were your trip in search of the source of the Okavango and your and Pauls trip from Cape Town, through Botswana, into Namibia doing Vanzyls pass, the Marianfluss and the Hartman Valley. Those two series have inspired me endlessly. I have to admit that your latest Canning series just didn't do it for me personally and as you said, the views seemed ro agree. Your 105 build in 2019 was also extremely inspirational and interesting to me as I had just bought a 1992 80 series With a 1hdt conversion. Having owned two hilux 4wd before, I have absolutely fallen in love with the 80 series and it amazes me that you have never owned one as far as I know. It surprised me that you never mentioned the 80 series as a possible Africa build with either a 1hdt or fte engine swap. Wirh the correct drawer system, gullwings at the rear and a good electrical system I think you would have to go far to beat it as a long distance overlander specially when it comes to how comfortable it is on any road. You woukd know this from driving the 105. Yes I guess I am biassed but the facts speak for themselves. You have even said once that the 80 aeries was created in Toyotas finest hour. I think you are right, the 80 I have, although in need of a little tlc still is by far better than either of the hiluxes I have owned in the past. How about an 80 series build? I think the build series would do even better than the 105 build did and you would have a real overland beast that would take you anywhere any time when it was done. Your thoughts and opinions on the 80 as a possible candidate would be very much appreciated.

I love your channel and I've been following your channels for many years. You have been a real inspiration. I was delighted when you revealed your plans to track down your original Range Rover. I was happy to see a Land Rover back in the spotlight on your channel. Also was cool to see how happy it made you. Now for the bad: Toyota, Toyota, Toyota. It's just so boring and predictable and it's just not fun watching everyone driving around in toyotas. This is a generalized reference to several overland/expedition channels. It's the same old plot regurgitated over and over. "Well off folks buy new Toyota, spend large sums of money on modifications, improvements and overland kit; travel, drink some beers, some random drone footage then back home. Then they sell the Toyota and buy another Toyota and repeat". It's a short predictable story that lacks passion or excitement. And it alienates you from some of your audience. Why? Because most folks can't afford to buy brand new Toyotas on a dime. They are super expensive. Let alone buy tons of high end super expensive iverland kit and modifications/upgrades for the Toyota. Hell most of us can't even afford to do international overland trips. Many of us are lower middle class. Many of us struggle to keep out old vehicles up and running all awhile raising families, paying bills and working boring unexciting 9-5 jobs. Some of us prefer older vehicles. You know the type. Less computers, less gadgets, less creature comforts, less luxury. Most of us have become accustomed to thinking on our old 4x4's and we have many great stories and adventures with them. We lack your financial success and we make do with old, high mileage vehicles. They are our daily drivers. They are our toys. We take them offroading. We fix them ourselves. We love them. We know first hand that you can have fun and adventure with old vehicles. Your channel like many others is starting to send out a message: "buy new vehicles, spend lots of money, buy the best kit, then you can embark on overland adventures". Or "buy new vehicles, use it afew times then sell it and buy another and repeat". This is boring. We can't relate to you on this lifestyle of consume, buy, waste. It's just not sustainable in any way shape or form. Especially these days when the environment or our foot print is in the spotlight. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. Keep vehicles for a long time. Keep up with the maintenance and appreciate the things you do have rather than constantly thinking about what you can buy next. Show us and inspire us to go out and adventure, explore, overland with old vehicles. Help us promote a more Minimalist lifestyle that is more environmentally responsible all the while enjoying the vehicles we love. Don't let fear of reliability limit you. It's part of the adventure. The unpredictability. Makes the best stories. Keep the bloody range Rover forever. Your children can inherent the Rover and keep it in the family for decades to come. Parts are cheap and they are easy to work on.

You can’t blame KZbin for the views you’re getting. It’s all down to the content. You cut up the Canning trip into too many, too short episodes. 4WD 24-7 are getting anything from 300k to over 1m views on long trip videos, some of which are over an hour long. Same for All 4 Adventure. They do one or maybe two episodes for long trips, not twelve. If you want over 100k views per video, it’s quite easy to see what works for Australian 4x4 films.

Andrew I think going to a Africa is the right path and its very very exiting as a viewer, especially for a new vehicle and scenery ! :) Just for you to know and consider, there is ALSO a third engine 1HD-FT the F stands for the multivalve (24v) head but as you may already have noticed there’s is no E so it is still has mechanical fuel delivery (completely analog and easier to swap it into another platform) As far as I know its the one to get for a Land Cruiser especially if you need reliability but want more performance than the 1HZ. Thanks for the great content and hopefully everything goes right for new Africa trips!

Waiting eagerly to see you in Kenya! Also if considering engine swap options, look at Dubai or Japan directly as a source option for engine plus loom etc etc as you would save an arm and a leg on shipping to Africa compared to shipping from Australia. Plus you would be more likely to get a lower mileage one notwithstanding you would still rebuild it for complete reliability.

When Toyota released the Landcruiser with the turbodiesel option in the late 1980's the transmission was upgraded as well. A lot of friends thought they would save a lot of money by buying the Naturally Aspirated version and bolt on an aftermarket turbo kit, saving over $10,000 as compared to the Turbodiesel variant. Until they busted the transmission and found out it's not rated for the extra torque the turbo kit supplies. If an engine transplant is the 'go', make sure the stock transmission is rated for the proposed torque output of the donor engine. I love your work, both the travel and the builds!

I bought my lc75 in 1992 with the 1HZ engine. I did put on a small turbo with good torque down low. I tow a heavy Fifth Wheeler, and by being very conservative with gentle double clutching every gear and not usually exceeding 3000 revs have had it last now for nearly 30 years only replacing the clutch a couple of months ago when I got caught trying to get the front wheels to reverse up a steep kerb. However to me it's virtually unbreakable.

This will likely be lost in the comments, but I think a Hilux xtra cab would be a great platform: more cab room for camera equipment, but still the load over the axle of a single cab. A Hilux would also be cheaper to buy and operate than a 70 series, and loads of people love them.

I wanted to cry for you when the Africa 105 had to be sold. It would have been perfect for this next step as you return to Africa. A roof conversion V8 76 sounds brilliant should you go in that direction. I'd certainly be keen to see it. Speaking of the 1HD-FTE, I have to wonder if it would be simpler to solid axle swap a 100 series than it would be to source all the 1HD-FTE bits to swap into a chassis of choice.

I have followed and enjoyed your adventures for many, many years, however I think I will struggle with yet another 70 series build. I was hoping that you may challenge yourself to move away from the platform which you have now perfected and have a go at something more of us can afford (ie Duel Cab Hi-lux etc) or something more out there at the same cost of a troopy build such as a 4WD Isuzu Truck. Please don't take this comment as just being negative, I just believe that this is an opportunity lost to give some insight into other potential platforms for future overlanding. I thank you for your efforts to date which has brought joy and knowledge to many of us.

Hi Andrew i think what ever you do will be very interesting ... the people that say another Troopy build will be boring well may be they are just boring !! I'm not a Land Rover fan but do love seeing old vehicle out perform new ones not only in reliability but in ride comfort ( ok there was not A/C ) but those coil springs all round as a kid can remember riding in one ( at the Birdsville races early 1990 ) and way smoother than our old FJ45 tray . Do love the comments to leave it with its original patina at least on the out side these 2 door old RangRovers are very cool and I don't know of to many around . Yes of course you are going to get excited about doing a build no matter what it is and looking back at it later as a tool that you built to do you work or holiday trip and being proud of what you have created .... may be if it was a Isuzu or Triton ( Mitsubishi Navara 😄) I would probably leave it out of the shot when taking a picture 🤣🤣. Yes i am a Toyota fan 45 and 70 series do own both of them will love to see what you choose a 76 or a Troopy , can't believe they don't have V8's in there Troopies over there whats wrong with those people ..

Look forward to seeing you travelling in Africa again. The 76 series sounds very interesting! Wish we got the 70 series cruisers here in the UK, strange how we can get all the others

I have been watching your videos from the beginning and I appreciate your work, your tenacity and good film making. I am 72 now and not much time left for me to go for overlanding that was what I did in 1978 crisscrossing Sahara with a Range Rover classic. Our group had three cars, one Range Rover that I was driving, one Landy and another Land Cruiser FJ40. No doubt all three cars were great in their job but Range Rover did it quite smoothly. Coming back to the subject I wanted to do a East and Southern Africa tour with my 1972 model made in India JONGA jeep that was manufactured for Indian Army. That jeep has in line 6 cylinder engine and a gear box of three forward and one reverse selection but 4x4 type. Engine is petrol driven. I am wondering if I bring that car for my Africa tour shall I get petrol regularly as this is a gas guzzler sort though I have got another 60 litre auxiliary tank fitted? What do you suggest?

I would love to see your view on Africa extended and not solely about South Africa. Here's a fresh (maybe stupid) idea: Kenya manufactures the Moebius. Which somewhat carries the pedigree of the Jeep. And there are quite a number of overland builds for the Jeep that might give inspiration for a Moebius built. What are your thoughts on this?

The 76 series with a Thor conversion will suit you well but I suspect the troopy with an engine swap will make you happier and happiness is important.

The canning stock series is some of the best work (overlanding or otherwise) I have seen on youtube. As someone who purchased an older vehicle purely because I owned and loved one when was younger (2002 Xterra… “Rexy”) your entire Land Rover narrative has touched my heart and validated my feelings. I will be signing up as a patron after this post and I encourage others to do the same so we can help you in your current situation. Safe travels brother. Please know there is a family in MN, USA that appreciates you!

Hi again Andrew, Just on second thoughts about which way you might go, i many ways, while I love your trips, I think I’d like to see you keep that Rangie and restore it. Perhaps you’d video your restoration process. I’ve seen a few RR restorations from England, but not many here in Australia and I’d be keen to see how you go about it. I’m sure there would be many ways you could do Africa and show that content as well. Cheers, Andy.

South Africa would be interesting, so how about a new LR Defender or is it just another wagon as you have noted...or single cab ute with a slideon camper back...whatever we will watch Andrew 😀

Hello Andrew, What about a van 4x4 conversion. Bus 4x4 utilises 200 series parts for the conversion on their Hiace and Granvia conversions. Could tick a lot of boxes and appeal to a whole new audience. There is a lot of interest in van life travel in Australia at the moment and having a trick 4x4 van accessoried would be something totally different from your norm. I think it would also tick a lot of your boxes for access etc for filming. Cheers

How about a single cab with a camper as you say but install a slide open rear window to the cab so you can access a shelf in the back from the cab for your camera gear.

Andrew I think you hit the nail on the head when you said you get so many more viewers when you show local Australian content. Australians really don't want to see the tetsie fly breeding grounds in SA Or the baboons rampaging through some unfortunates tent. Sorry but most Australians would say keep it local.

My late vote after hearing all the feedback is to restore the Range Rover while doing smaller trips in Australia. The theme could be look what this 45+yr old vehicle can do. Get the views by doing something so unique such as build + overland. In the meantime, move the Troopy over to South Africa since its not about the vehicle. You now have a perfect overlander for where you will do the majority of your future expeditions that won't be tying you up while you restore the Range Rover. With any direction you go, I'll loyally tune in every week.

Not sure if if had bee menioned already, but how about an Igelhaut or Achlaitner MB Sprinter version to build on? They come solid axels, triple locked and could be an interesting base for an overlanding van.

How about a series on building a overlanding car for a family 2 adults and 2 kids... I miss this in yt... Maybe a series how you would think and how to choose the car/plattform designing it on computer / in studio or with a family IRL.

For the 1hdfte look up Onlyland cruisers on the Gold Coast he might be able to do a wiring loom, or you could do a 1hdft no E its the manual pump 24 valve engine so easy conversion and will bolt in to a 1hz troopy

Too many bespoke parts that are not available anymore. Plus they suffer similar issues to a Defender but the parts are just plain different.

Travel where you want , with what you want , and I personally give 85% for the trips and 15% for the building. And as a Land Rover-man since 1984 , an now have a 2013 Def. Puma , I think it`s the same what name stand in front of the grill , as long as we share the passion for 4x4 , camping , trips and meetings . And life is to short , so as Land Rover say ; One Life Live It 👍

If you upgrade the engine in the Hzj78, you'll need to upgrade the transmission as well. Unfortunately the transmission in the 78 was its weakest point. Go with the 76, that would be interesting as it's kind off different.

what about a jeep cherokee? it is a bit smaller than most of the options you said, except the jimny, but it is a solid axle off roader that is reasonably comfortable. (im not talking about the new soft one). they are quite common and dont break too often with correct maintenance.
