Yes, I chuckled all the way through. I've had lots of RR and live in the deep countryside, and grow lots of trees, so have the excuse. Its best to have an older one so that its not a huge shame to scratch the paintwork on brambles, but always the problem is the fuel consumption. Because the car is utterly supreme at all the rest: comfort, space, towing capacity and utter charm, you can forgive it, mostly, but all the same it would be far nicer to have all that and not have to buy the cake to feed it. RR, with the hybrid, are going in the right direction and I really, really look forward to seeing the fully battery-electric versions when they arrive. Four motors, one for each wheel is going to give fabulous off-road capability after all.

I know plenty of people who use their truck/suv as their daily driver, but the whole reason that they bought it was because they want to be able to tow their boat to a lake that's 150 miles away, or their RV trailer (caravan in the UK?) halfway across the country, or their motorcycles to a stunt show on the other side of the country (1,000 miles away). BEVs just don't have those capabilities yet.

Personally, I would rather drive a RR hybrid with all the toys and trinkets, the comfort and "status" over a Model 3. I think everyone shouting that this is not a "fully charged" vehicle, and "it's just 13 miles on charge" needs to embrace the direction, and ask for more.

Speaking as the owner of an EV, whose wife drives a PHEV, I find it predictably human and predictably depressing that the EV world has become fundamentalist in too many cases. As far as I am concerned, any electric miles are good miles, and many people cannot go full EV for any number of reasons, real or imagined. Yes, the battery is pretty feeble, but it's a stepping stone car. If nothing else, the PHEV has converted my wife to auto gearboxes, she loves the idea of using no fuel to pick up the kids from school and also the fact that her commute to work costs her a lot less than the previous car (Seat Leon), and if something with a decent range, decent boot and preferably an SUV at a decent price turns up (no Model X for us) I reckon I can persuade her to go full EV when we come to hand it back in a few years time (Kona's too small, folks).

@andreas.abrahamsson6 жыл бұрын
The platform isn't designed for it. The next generation will go fully electric, but we won't see it until 2020. Also, please don't get too excited about this hybrid. It still faces the same issues all heavy vehicles with small petrol engine/hybrid engines do - they don't work according to specs as they are just too small. There is no replacement for displacement when it comes to power and low fuel consumption. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5KyY6l5lM6Aiqs Car manufacturers can trick people to get small displacement engines but as soon as you ask for power, the fuel consumption will spike. I owned an L405 RR V8 S/C 510hp, which averaged 16.8 l/100km during my two years of ownership. Last year I rented the Volvo XC90 D5, 235hp for a month and averaged 11.5 l/100km. The engine is less than half the size in power and displacement, yet the fuel consumption is far greater than half of the RR. The RR will be an epic vehicle when it’s fully electric. Pretty much unbeatable. And yes, the Jaguar is pretty cool. Just too small. :)

It's actually a great way to get a huge amount of zero emission miles from a car with a tiny battery. While the world is limited in cell production (Tesla doesn more than half of it and no-can just flip a switch and double that), hybrids are likely a better way to utilize that battery capacity towards replacing fossil/bio fueled miles driven. Why? Most drives are short enough to be covered or largely covered by a tiny hybrid battery. The fuel engine being there ensures there will be no trailer rolls of shame as many a Tesla (or other BEV) has seen. No need to overdo it with the battery. How often does a Tesla actually drive from 90 to 10%? Certainly not much more an likely less than 10% of total mileage. making the extra cells beyond 10-15kWh essentially a waste. There are plenty ICE engines that are already build and can be used as range entender/trailer fail safe. Super clean and efficient compared to a new big battery pack you don't really need on adaily or even weekly basis.

PHEV may be better than nothing, but in most shots you saw exhaust fumes. This was more an ICE car review than anything electric.
@marc05236 жыл бұрын
Engine was idling, not revving high, in the shots. An engine needs to be running when in water so you don't damage it. Off road isn't normal driving and the electric system won't be optimised for that driving style. What matters more, and not mentioned, is how long you can sit in traffic in London with the AC/heater on before the engine needs to kick in.
@SDav216 жыл бұрын
It is not exhaust fumes. It is condensation. I mean you never see exhaust fumes from cars. So what are you on about? If you do see something on a cold morning it is water vapour not exhaust fumes. The exhaust pipe gets hot you know.

@superdau6 жыл бұрын
SDav, what are you on about? What you see are exactly the exhaust fumes. Where do you think the water that is condensing is coming from? Water vapor is part of the exhaust fumes. But to you the exhaust is just water and the rest smells of roses, I guess? And what does the exhaust pipe getting hot to do with that? You also completely missed my point. It was that during the drive it was mostly the ICE doing the work, not the electric motor.
@SDav216 жыл бұрын
superdau You are so naive. It is NOT exhaust fumes. The car was driving through water and mud the whole time. That causes condensation and water vapour because the EXHAUST PIPE GETS HOT. Duh. Go and see a pure diesel or petrol Range Rover not driving in that conditions and you'll see NO exhaust fumes. You sound so desparate to make it seem ice vehicles just make smelly exhaust fumes when they don't. You clearly have not even driven or been close to a modern vehicle. So perhaps don't comment such nonsense when you don't even know. And i honestly don't care that it was using the petrol engine all through the drive.
