We've brought together the six most popular dual cab 4x4 utes in Australia to compare against each other.
It's a mix of specs - we wanted to keep it relatively even across the price ranges, but there's still a bit of a gap between the models on show. They are: Ford Ranger XLT Bi-turbo, Toyota HiLux SR5, Holden Colorado Z71, Nissan Navara N-Trek, Mitsubishi Triton GLS Premium and Isuzu D-Max LS-T.
With prices between $52k and $61k, value will play a part in this test - but so will the performance of each of these pickup trucks during our on-road testing, and also how they perform off road.

Great comprehensive review. As a previous Hilux owner it was good to see it's off road capability still right up there. Saw there was a woman in the team - would love to see a woman journalist to camera and maybe the incorporation of some environment issues. Honestly, for the last five years none! The bt-50 and raptor ranger are about the best I reckon, and obviously both for very different reasons, but none actually tick all the boxes for me, here’s my thoughts compiled Below. Let’s start with the no’s straight up! Anything European! so that rules out merc, and VW, yeah good engines 3 litre, powerful comfortable, woopdy do!. Do I trust either brand, nope! I don’t trust them and wouldn’t want it if you bought it for me (I’d sell and buy accessories instead). Customer service?? that’s another f up! Price? umm I didn’t r realise it was a privilege for the company that I buy their brand of car, so no in that principle alone. You want my money? give me better service and a better price! Top-ota? Cruiser, yeah ok why not, well they’re never on sale, rear axel needs replaced, alternator very low has river crossing problems, so let’s spend 70/90 k and fix what’s should be stock! So no. Deemed reliable, 400,000 kms still selling for $30k. That’s a lot of driving with a good price tag at the end of it. Hilux, expensive, boring small side of the engines, old tech, reliable.... DPF..... maybe. Potential top five. Holden. Nope! Not even a calais, commodore any HSV, (z71 is meant to be a v8). Holden Failed, past their date etc etc. Navara, well it’s in my top three, numero uno if it had better suspension a 3 litre Nissan engine (think v9x) and was a little bit longer and wider, it would be my pick, hence the raptor mentioned above, also doesn’t have the best wading depth 600mm in comparison to 800 bt and ranger, and soon 900 for Land Rover, (albeit a European wagon) but still impressive like the price! Mitso? well I almost bought one based on price, was curious to know how ARB was going to do their bull bar too (thought I’d hold off), it looks good as it is stock but not really an off-roader with that face. CUSTOMER SERVICE? probably the best, at the moment and that is worth at the very least 90% of purchase IMO. Small engine, 6sp auto and manual not bad but small, expensive to service, 500mm wading depth ahh what!! Not sure I want to take it through a puddle let alone somewhere remote. LDV? could be the best thing since sliced bread if it’s reliable and stays that way, customer service, not as good as Mazda or Mitso. Don’t fully trust it in remote places, let’s give it about 10 years ay. Maybe you could just buy a cheap reliable engine/ parts off the shelf in a remote place one day, wouldn’t that be sweet! Isuzu, another brand that could mop the floor clean if their price was about 7-10k cheaper, more comfortable, and less boring so let’s keep moving ay. Mahindra, Great Wall Ssanyong, obocould be better! Don’t always want to buy Chinese/Indian crap, we have enough of it. So from memory this leaves ford and Mazda. Ford! nice looking vehicles for sure, has some tech, cool but not necessary, new 2litre bi turbo is impressive but needs a tune for overtaking, not sure if I’d want to tow a caravan. range topping Wildtrack, (yes I know raptor i’ve placed that in another category) personally I don’t think the wildtrack is worth it, looks the best but you pay out the nose for it! Customer service, not as good as the the others, about 5th on my list, so could be better for price outlayed. Same angles with bt-50, ramp over etc etc. it’s a no for customer service and price for me. Mazda? customer service is great, same 3.2, reliable, cheaper, boring but a safe bet thus far, plenty of mods on the market after not buying a ranger. Its big maybe a little to big and that affects rampover angle, departure angle and approach, view from driver side isn’t the greatest steering is vague, reverse camera in review mirror (pet peeve). Not a lot of tech, simple, cheap reliable almost like a land cruiser, it ticks the most boxes and It’s my pick based on those things mentioned. Ranger raptor, well, I’d say it’s the best, but would be nice with a 3.2L ten speed, and about 10-20k cheaper!

The new MR Triton is a weapon and is well deserved 2nd place, it offers the most technology and safety out off all the utes and is the cheapest to purchase. Match this with a very reliable platform, 7 years factory warranty, 3 yrs capped price service and 4 yrs aus wide road side assist and you can see why! Plus its the only ute that allows it to run 4wd on sealed roads, amazing when towing or going through wet slippery hills.
@tasmanmcmillan1777

I wouldn’t call it a weapon off road. It’s definitely best for price. But as soon as you add weight and bush conditions, it wouldn’t handle it. I wouldn’t get any of these. Id go for either a vdj79 or an f150 for reliability & pure toughness.

I tested a Navara, Triton, Hilux and BT50 when I bought a new ute last year and ended up with the BT50 XT for the ride quality, diff lock, Apple car play and reverse camera and it's where my 6'4 frame fit the best. Also, the 40K and a smidge drive-away price was including the first 3 services, for me, great value. Now a year later, and firmly in the for-what-it's-worth category, I can state my only complaints are the slightly higher than expected fuel consumption and VERY slow to kick-down auto gear box that's way more meh meh than zoom zoom. On the plus side, with a set only a set of AT's as modifications, it's going great through the high country and remains very quiet on the road and handles better on rough country roads than I expected being a ute. Thanks for the video.

In my Mauritius Island Ranger and Hilux are the dominator. Both perform well and have good reputation but Hilux is considered to be more reliable. In fact, Toyota is the most advanced showroom here due to it’s custom website to buy parts and free delivery and also have another showroom just for parts and incredible services. In 2020, toyota sold more vehicles than other brand in Mauritius and we even have a page on Facebook where every Hilux owner post their pickup photos and share their experiences. That’s truly blissfulness.

I agree -- one has to choose such a truck based in its optimized utility & functionality. In my case, I will also definitely chose Hilux based on what I've stated above. As someone who works in the farm & uses a vehicle multi-purposely, I find the Hilux to be the most optimized esp. for my need & driving skills, too. It may not have the highest HP or what but, hey, it does deliver! Amazingly so, applying some hypermiling techniques, I was able to push fuel economy ranging from 14 to 16 km/L diesel. And I find driving with 20 cavs (about a ton) of animal feeds at the back even on a dirt road to be not hard for the vehicle to do. So yes, in choosing which ute to buy, one must always consider its optimized utility & functionality. It will definitely deliver cost efficiency esp. if used in business. Greetings from the Philippines!

However, testing to see the best off road but then saying you avoided using the diff lock on cars that had one to level the playing field is a bit like saying, we raced these 3 cars to see which would be the fastest but made the Ferrari and lambo stay in 1st gear to give the corolla a chance. Being only automatic transmission tested, I would agree with most you said, only will say, I have driven a ford, and the ride and suspension is from 1990 too damn hard and uncomfortable. Hands down, toyota will win offroad, as the ute is built for offroad (P.S. the DPF issue is and has been fixed. Most other diesel utes have a light to show the drive to run the ute 30km up a motorway and back). Just one request. Can all you guys be real men and test drive these ute in MANUAL transmission...

Agree. Isuzu must not have sent them a "Christmas card" lately. Many other comparisons of the same Utes highly rate the D-Max. Also, the constant mentioning of "reliable" for Toyota is directly from the marketing department. That statement is true in the past, and probably the future, but not today. I recommend taking them all for a test drive. If you want to hold onto your rig longer than the warranty, consider Isuzu.

Was looking to buy a Ute this year and test drove a bunch of the ones tested here. By God, the Hilux (Conquest) was horrendous to drive. Suspension just shakes you dizzy. Infotainment system is so outdated. The seats in the rear were uncomfortable due to poor contour design. Engine and gearbox did not belong in this decade. Out of the ones tested, I was most surprised with the Navara's refinement especially with the suspension. 2.5l Engine was smooth too despite being a bit older. Shame the coilovers did not translate well when the tub is loaded though. Ended up with a Bi-Turbo Ranger Wildtrak.

You shouldn't bemoan people asking about the Amarok. What's the point of comparing only the most popular models?.. They're already being sold. Why not compare the less purchased (less known or understood) models? Throw in the Amarok (which is known the be one of the better performers) or an LDV (which is $20k cheaper than most of these models) or something.
