Update about Arkanoid vs. Space Invaders download: I heard back from the company. At the time of this review it was not available but once the game goes live on the eShop, it will be available.

Boo, That’s sucks. (Not directed at you but the company waiting on the US eShop). Also saying this as someone who had no issue getting the Japanese Version to download when I purchased mine from Play-Asia. Hopefully they get this sorted out for all the Western players soon because that’s just unfair to you all. PS: When you do finally get it, if you have a Flip-Grip, make sure to have it ready just in case. 😉

I started playing space invaders in a little coffee shop/pizza shop in our small town. Always the same routine: order the pizza and see how long you could play until your pizza was ready.

space invaders extreme is very addictive but the original I could never enjoy for more thant a few games. Especially when games like Galaxian/Galaga exist.

Why did they leave out Space Invaders 95? I LOVE that version. It very fast and arcady. The equivalent of Parodius to Gradius. Would've loved Space Invaders Extreme 2 also.

Space Invaders Extreme is crazy fun, beautiful presentation. Played the hell out of it on the DS.

This collection definitely has more substance than Forever, but the price is ludicrous for what you get. I mean, the digital version costs 100 AU dollars and that's way too steep for a collection of Space Invader games. Though it would've been nice if they also included Infinity Gene, which is another great revival of the classic Space Invaders to go alongside Extreme, but oh well.

When I was in Japan, Space Invaders/Taito had a pop up shop type thing called Space Invaders Room, and one of the displays to play was Space Invaders Gigamax! The screen was massive and probably 10-20feet long, they had 8 separate arcade sticks for players! In that scenario it was a great multiplayer experience, I can't imagine it would translate well to a smaller screen and less players. Also Arkanoid vs Space Invaders is a great title, I have the mobile version on my phone and I enjoyed it a lot!

At 2:12 "Space Invaders Part 2" doesn't just let you put your 3 letter initials for high score, it lets you put a name of up to 10 letters. Very few arcade games ever did this & for obvious reasons. This game might have been the very first to allow more than 3 letters for high score, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

Space Invaders was the very first videogame I played. Don't know what system I played it on I just remember that it was on a computer and the screen was black and white. That was like early 80's.

I do love me some Space Invaders, I have never seen this edition before watching this video. I can remember walking into an arcade and seeing the Space Invaders cabinet for the first time; great stuff!

The latest token giving arcade Space Invaders game is pretty cool. Floor to ceiling LED grid display, up to 2 players, and a force feedback gun. Very nice to play. They made Bust-A-Move in the same style too!

The Galaga series definitely aged better than Space Invaders.. Still seems like a nice little history lesson with this collection.. Its probably worth picking up on a sale..

I have so many versions of Space Invaders as-is... this will be a pass for me, since I have most of these in original form or on compilations. Taito and Space Invaders reminds me of Sega always re-releasing the same Genesis games. I'd be way more excited to see a really nice Rastan collection with the 3 arcade games, Master System port of the original, Genesis and PCE ports of Nastar, and maybe Champion Wrestler thrown in since Miracle Rastan was one of the wrestlers. Modern TVs could do that 2 monitor wide setup for Warrior Blade proud.

A space invaders collection is fine, but what about the other Taito hits? Taito Legends 1 & 2 for the PS2/XBOX was like 15 years ago or so!

Definitely needs to be rereleased, although these days single digital releases seem to be more lucrative for companies. At this point any decent compilation is welcome.

Not if you break down how many you get. It really comes down to, “How Much Do I Love Space Invaders….?” Think about how many games you get for $60. That’s way more than you would have gotten if you bought each game individually from the Virtual Console (if that was still a thing). Which goes back to my whole argument that we don’t need a “Virtual Console” anymore. Sorry about that last random rant part out of context, was just watching a video on that subject before this ☝️.

No Space Invaders Infinity Gene, it really should be there at that price! Thanks John for reviewing this, but I feel at a full price game of £55 it needs more content, hopefully Infinity Gene gets added as a free DLC later on. Also they released Space Invaders on SNES and this is pretty much DX. Plus the Gameboy release had really good Super Gameboy special features from the SNES version of DX. I didn't know DX was an arcade release until now.

For a Space Invaders Compilation, it has a good selection of Space Invaders Original to Extreme. Kind of disappointing there's no Space Invaders Get Even from the Wii Ware back on Nintendo Wii. It would have been a great addition to this compilation as I did enjoy quite a bit of it. I did enjoy the online multiplayer of Space Invaders Extreme on the Nintendo DS back in the day, but is no longer available to use since Nintendo shut down the WiFi on the handheld. No Space Invaders Infinity Gene either, come on now. That was a great game for the Xbox 360 and PS3 with the evolution gimmick. I guess that the Space Invaders Extreme 2 is going to stay as a Nintendo DS Exclusive, yes it is similar to the original Extreme with exception of different music but, still that same great Extreme gameplay as before.

I bought Space Invaders Forever and got the Arkanoid download. Now….if I get this version as well, will there be 2 separate arkanoid icons on my switch?

@@johnhancockretro to be honest, it downloaded randomly the 2nd or 3rd time I put the cartridge in. I remember being confused as to why it wasn’t on the menu in the game. Next thing I know it was on my switch Home Screen. Weird.

Really wished they add multiplayer to Space Invaders Extreme; as it was also the highlight of this collection, rather then adding it to a Space Invaders game that is more in line with the orginal ones (which seem dated ).

PS: I purchased this from Play-Asia & they included a really cool limited edition tea bowl set of six bowls in a wood box. Such a cool display piece. Sadly one of my bowls arrived cracked/broke right down the middle.

Well Atari developed the 2600 port in house so they would need to negotiate to have that version. Sucks though because it has so many fun variations.
