I do wish modern interpretations would kind of go back to the 90's and 60's close knit family dynamic. I get there needs to be conflict, but I love that I can watch tons of episodes of the 60's show, and never have a single question as to whether every single person in that family adores each other.

I love the 60’s show, it’s what I grew up watching and I wished for the new adaptation they wouldn’t feel the need to be so formulaic (teenage girl in a magical school that has a big role to play), I feel like the only thing separating this show to any other is the aesthetic and the idea of the character. It’s still good but not that original

@@Katiafliger I 100% agree. It’s not that Wednesday can’t have frustrations with her family, she can, but when she is set in such strong opposition to them, it looses the essence of what ‘Addams Family’ is. Plus, the way the new Wednesday (show) portrays this conflict is jarringly juvenile.

This was my major complaint with the new version. One of the major aspects of the Addams Family in my opinion is the judgment they face for being different and how healthy of a family they actually are. The humor plays on that perfectly. With adding “normal” conflict between teens and parents it now has trivialized one of the greatest statements of the Addams Family.

What I didn’t like about the 3D animated movies was how disapproving morticia was of her daughters girly interests. I feel like the whole point of the Addams family is that they’re weird, but unlike most sitcom family to come before them, they actually loved and supported each other Morticia can be disinterested (and kind of disgusted) with pink outfits and pageants, but she would NEVER stop her daughter from experimenting with unconventional (to her) stuff

Based on the first 3D movie, I would not be surprised if Morticia greatest fear is that her family falls to conformity. Considering the "normal" people were the ones who drove her and Gomez out of their original home, she's terrified that Wednesday will end up like them.

I think Addams Family Values shows this really well. At first when Pubert starts to turn into a normal baby, they are horrified but later we see Morticia sitting in his regular kid's room reading Dr Suess to him. She clearly hates every second of it, but she does it anyway because Puberty seems to enjoy it

In the 1960s version of the Addams family there is an episode where Pugsly gets into normals things like a puppy, Boy Scouts, playing with other children, and Morticia and Gomez are not pleased. They think there is something wrong with Pugsley and they spend the episode trying to fix him by going to a psychiatrist. It feels like the pressure on their kids to be different was there from close to the start.

@@clarityvee I actually loved Enid, and I think the point of her "you can tell she's acting" was intentional given her outcast status and relationship with her family. Her bubbly nature was her form of rebellion in polar opposite to Wednesday's approach which is why they were such a good pairing, and therefore it was a persona she had to willfully and forcefully maintain. I think overall the cast did quite well with what they were given, but I agree 100% that a lot of the writing skirted too far into CW territory and the whole 'love triangle' trope needs to die by steam powered guillotine.

Jenna Ortega did an amazing job, but the way they wrote the character for her seems so odd. The troubled relationship she had with her parents, *especially* with Morticia, was such a bizarre choice that did a major disservice to the characters imo. One of the main defining characteristics of the Addams family is how close and loving they are despite how strange they may seem. Ignoring the way this was meant to subvert the classic nuclear family trope is crazy

I have mixed feelings about it. My hope is that through the show Wednesday will grow as a character and we'll have the payoff of the quintessential Addams Family and their tight bond to each other. Christina is the gold standard Wednesday. It's predictable because it's true. Also, there are countless teenage characters whose plot-lines revolve around rebellion against their parents. It's rare to see a teenager who's fiercely loyal to and inspired by their family, while being anything but a goodie-two-shoes.
@DelilahDarling17
@DelilahDarling17 2 жыл бұрын
That's what I've been trying to say! It would be so, so refreshing. Especially as someone who, as a teenager, was that way. I'm a young adult, so I still remember most of my teen years, and while I had a rebellious/emo phase; I luckily got out of it early. Still easily snapped and still do, but I was definitely what's considered a "goody two shoes." Still considered that too, I'm sure, haha. It seriously needs to be represented more, and I feel as if Wednesday would've been perfect for that. The "rebellious/angsty teenager" is very, very overdone in my opinion. It really is like finding a rare gem to see the opposite. I seriously would have liked the new show, as I don't personally like it (for *various* of reasons, mind you), if they based it around Wednesday standing out from the crowd due to her being so close and prideful of her family, while everyone else either takes theirs for granted or has some legitimate issues in their own. What I always enjoyed, as well, was the core of the Addams Family is that they tend to think that their version of normal isn't bizarre or "stands out from the crowd" at all. Hopefully I'm not wrong on that, but that's what I remember. If they wanted conflict in the new show, it could've been Wednesday discovering that most of the world is the complete opposite of her family, but that's okay. And for character development? She could've helped others with their own family and other troubles, once she grew close to them. Would probably try to help in her own macabre ways, unless those she cared about requested her not to. Another conflict, which would probably be the start, could've been she *tries* to make friends; but not everyone is like her brother Pugsley, where they'll carelessly laugh at a giant, poisonous spider under their pillow as a "simple, harmless prank." Those are all just my thoughts, though. Let me know what you think! I wholeheartedly agree with your comment. Even though I think Christina's Wednesday was probably the opposite of a few of what I've described, as my memory is kinda blurry.

This is what I was trying to articulate on another video for the new Wednesday and got so much hate for it. I even clearly stated that I like the new Wednesday. She just wasn’t dark enough. For me, Wednesday’s darkness (not slightly emo, or a little bit angsty), but her psychopathic aura is a big part of what makes her Wednesday. If a version of Wednesday doesn’t scare you it’s not completely right. Yes, Wednesday can have friends and a boyfriend but if we’re not worried that she’ll kill them at any moment, is it even Wednesday. Christina Ricci’s performance is being slightly devalued by this younger generation, I think. They assume that we all think she’s iconic because she was the first (she wasn’t), but in fact, it’s because she was the best. Her version resonated because it was so well done. If it wasn’t as well done, it wouldn’t be so iconic. It would be yet another character in yet another movie that no one remembers. If we had the 90s version of Wednesday (heck the whole cast) debuting for the first time now, it would instantly be labelled iconic. It was a once in a lifetime performance where everything came together to produce magic. It’s up there with Heath Ledger’s Joker, American Psycho, Forrest Gump, Terminator, Ripley from Alien etc.

In my opinion Wednesday is never *actually* trying to kill Pugsley in the movies - they really are playing, and it's a macabre version of 'typical' sibling relationships. He knows it's a game, too. (Most of the time.) One of my favourite moments from Fugère's Wednesday is when she says of a black cat that has been following her throughout the episode, "I'll take care of him! I mean...I'LL take care of HIM" - as if she let her mask of cold indifference slip for a second. (And Wednesday with a cat is just a really cute idea that should be done more, it's a shame the cat wasn't seen again after that episode. Wednesday is quite catlike herself in that she seems like a loner but actually just shows affection in an atypical way). It's also notable and quite funny that Fugère's Wednesday has a...for want of a better word, 'yandere' side that would later be seen to some extent in Melissa Hunter's interpretation.

I know some people will talk about how "Well Christina was a supporting role and Jenna was the main character", and "You only think that because the original movie is part of your childhood" but honestly, to a supporting character be so impactful and call so much attention as Christina there is clearly something there. Jenna did great, but I think what "flawed" her was the script. I re-watched the Addams Family movies before watching the show and I think I know what it is. In the movies, Wednesday is nonchalant, calm, collected, and very polite. She had assertive energy without using anger and bad manners, and the jokes were dry, dark, and fitting. The one-liners fit the scene and didn't feel like the character was trying too hard to be menacing, and world building made sense. This Jenna version wasn't as impactful because of the world-building and the demeanor. 1- It doesn't make any sense that Wednesday would be the only goth girl in the school, or would be seen as weird for it we're in 2022, the number of cringe people in schools is astronomical, especially of e-girls and goth girls. 2- The way they shunned her as an outcast in a school of outcasts. sirens can control people, the stoners can turn people into stone, and werewolves and vampires exist but all it took to make them scared was a girl in pigtails and a black uniform with an attitude?! In the 93 movie the world they put Wednesday around made sense, she was in a camp for white privileged children who shamed her, her brother, and her friend for being different. This leads me to problem number three. 3- How people react to Wednesday's attitude in the 22 version. Besides some of the adults, the teens were too nice and too helpful. How does someone treat you poorly the way Wednesday was treating them and yet they consistently help her? She consistently judges, shames, and insults people yet they go back to help her, or she goes ask them for help. Her character is insecure enough to take criticism as a personal offense, while the Christina version as ModernGurlz stated would be openly ridiculed bu her attitude yet remain confident and certain of herself. Honestly, none of that is Jenna's fault, she did great and without her performance, the show wouldn't work as well. It's just that this new character is edgy teen bait, which makes it seem like being rude = being impactful.

my only issue with jenna ortega's wednesday's style is that she states that she's not interested in trends but wears trendy clothing. besides the (very few) dresses she wears, the other costumes were not what i expected her to wear. i HATED the zara vest with the black jeans. It's interesting that Chloe Grace Moretz and Jenna Ortega are required so high due to the feedback for the adaptation they're from. I absolutely agree with the ranking, I just find it interesting how these two versions of the Addams family misrepresented the family whilst developing the character of Wednesday so well. In fact, maybe that's the issue. With Wednesday herself being so iconic by this point, the adaptations focused so much on getting her right that they didn't put enough into the other elements of the story

I feel like especially with Jenna´s Wednesday alot comes from the actress herself. Christina Ricci´s Wednesday is hands down very well written and iconic and well played but as far as the acting and performance goes Jenna is defenetly first place. Every flaw in Jenna´s character comes from the writting and directing, Jenna herself absolutly nailed the role she was supost to and put so much of her own into it. Jenna really is the reason why the show is despite it flaws and all the challenges she had so good and that´s why she is so high on the rankings. As far as the writting goes Christina´s character although lacking in some areas is probably the best written and she did a great job playing the part I really think Jenna as an actress is the better of the two.

In case anyone doesn't know The Addams family was also turned into a musical, opening on Broadway in 2010, and Krysta Rodriguez originated the role of Wednesday. The show is about a newly 18-year-old Wednesday having a boyfriend and inviting him and his parents to dinner, and her family being concerned about her changing and if her relationship will alter the family and their dynamics. A storm happens on the night of the dinner, which forces everyone to stay in the Addams' mansion.

Like when Weems would wear whites which usually associated with purity as she seeks to be a positive representation of the school to the public, but is actually hollow and clinical, and calculating. And the few scenes where she is wearing a sickly green color is when she’s actively deceiving. By that rationale the same goes for Roger Moore as James Bond or Adam West as Batman. Do I mean this in a sarcastic sense, a factual sense or (if this is possible for you to comprehend) *both* senses? Well, you see in real life you'd be amazed how nothing is really that black and white. You'd also be amazed how many times in history something truly bad led to something good. Thanks the to Black Death we saw the Renaissance. Uncle Joe (Stalin) won the war for the allies in WWII. You know, nuances. Aside from the fact you can't even write two sentences without using punctuation (which means you're either lazy or uneducated... or both), your claim isn't even valid on its own. The Addams Family were a cult phenomenon long before Christina Ricci's version of Wednesday. Had the films flopped (and as it were they never were blockbuster hits when they were new) that wouldn't have spelled the end of the Addams Family. Heck, had they never been made it still wouldn't have mattered. The bottom line is that they're charming and relatable and that's how they have managed to be around for 80+ years in different forms of media. You're also under the absurd and ludicruous assumption that actors create a character when it's the script writers, directors and producers who create them. The characters of the Addams Family (and any other fictional character) always get updated for modern day audiences. It's fair and rather rational to assume that Wednesday Addams would have been modernized for 21st century norms and culture *whether or not there even had been a 1990's version of the Addams Family* . "is the only answer." Many Muslims I've met say the same about the Quran. It's 100% the only answer. You sure you want to be placed in the fanatical bigot bracket? Scope Context Nuances Those are qualities of reasonable and open-minded peopel. Faith Narrowmindedness Ignorance Those are the traits (certainly not qualities) of bad and dangerous people. Guess which one you are closer? Btw, Eon Productions did intended to axe James Bond prior to Moore and DC Comics did intend to axe Batman prior to Adam West. There's a difference here, those were the main protagonists of their respective franchises. Wednesday Adams is but *one* member of the Addams Family. So are you seriously claiming that without Christina Ricci we'd never see a modern day iteration of either the Addams Family or the character Wednesday? If so you're exactly what I asses you to be. One thing the newest incarnation did better than any previous one is the balance between their love of deadly games and the fact that they don't ACTUALLY want to kill each other. Compare that to Jenna Ortega who not only nails her version of Wednesday but puts so much of her own charm into it. All flaws from her character come from the writting and every single actress after her has to try extra hard given the love and nostalgia the character now has the actresses really have to live up to much more than she did. And given the caotic shooting Jenna really stands out. I honestly don´t think that under the same circumstances Christina would have now done such a good job as Jenna did. My take on the Adult Wednesday Addams weighed heavily on the time period it's set in. Where a woman that confident and oddly supportive, but still uniquely herself, would be be received quite differently than in the 60s-90s. I understand why someone wouldn't agree with how she depicted Wednesday as an adult, but I thought it was a well balanced mixture of her sweet characterization in earlier media, and the dry malice of the 90s film versions, coming together to give us a mixture of diverse interactions with people. Wednesday and Pugsley's relationship was similar to that of me and my other brother. We get into hijinks and would pick on each other, but we still loved each other. The 2nd movie definitely strike a chord with me as far as Wednesday portrayal there because I was a victim of bullying and found Ricci's performance there inspiring for me to start standing up for myself as I entered my teen years (and learning there were good people out there). Of course they would make another classic character lgtb to make people pleased lol That’s why I don’t like new versions of old characters bc they are not original and changed due to the social demanings and that is like a spit in a creator’s face bc it is not sth they intended. I saw lately a new version of Shaggy from Scooby Doo and was so angry. I don’t have nothing to new lgtb or afro american characters but fuck that makes me crazy that they take those old classic and meaningful to a lot of people icons and completely change them…what is Hollywood doing now with cinematography is disgusting. And about Wednesday she should stay alone, for me she is someone who would not be interested in such trivial thing as love.

@@katarzynab946 but ...wednesday was never canonically straight to begin with. She was a child with no specified sexuality and no love interests or kid crushes, and the only reference to her preferences we ever got was that she had 0 interest in marriage or romance which points to an aro/ace person if anything, not to someone straight. And aroace is also part of the lgbtqia+ ...you know, that's what the " a" stands for.

@@katarzynab946 You don't make sense. First of all why do you say "of course they would make her lgbt" when they didn't and Jenna's Wednesday ended up being straight? Second if she wanted to stay alone and didn't care for love that would make her NOT straight (a person attracted to the opposite gender) but asexual (a person not attracted to anyone). So you're saying 2 contradicting things lol??
@katarzynab946
@katarzynab946 Жыл бұрын
@@aleksandra5808 I meant they are planning to do so in the next season as articles says idk if they will do but that’s not suprising. I didn’t write anywhere Wednesday is straight but that for me she wasn’t interested in love. It is not about sexuality but about changing original character, that is pissing me off, and she is not the only one they change from the past. This is typical Hollywood move, they bring back old characters and change them. Another example Anne’s friend in Anne with an E which is even funnier considering the times in which those characters lives.

Im surprised you didn't include the Wednesday from The Addams Family Musical played by Krysta Rodriguez. Thats the Wednesday I grew up with. :) And I like the take they have on the character. She has the most growth out of any other renditions that depicts being confident in yourself and who you are in relationship. Allowing Wednesday to be true to her usual characteristics while alson letting change happen naturally with life. Definitely should check it out!!

I think the ranking was spot on, especially the top three, which I know of the most. Even as a 2000s kid, I grew up watching the 1990s version of Christina Ricci's addams family, and she is iconic. I loved the 2019 animated version, and the plot lines. But as a teenager now watching wedneseday, I guess its easier to relate to Wedneseday, especially since they made her more socially awkward and less like a fictional character.

We need more videos like this about each member of the Addams family. I personally would love a video like this about Morticia or Gomez, is really interesting to see how the characters have changed so munch trough the years with each diferent adaptation, but with wednesday it feels like we see her grown with almost each new interpretation being older than the previous one. My personal favorite Wednesday (Marlina for the spanish speakers) is the Movie version, tough i also enjoyed the animated 3D film Wednesday and Jenna Ortega's Wednesday.

Lisa Loring has always been my absolute favorite version of Wednesday. I know she may not be what most people think Wednesday Addams should be but she's exactly what I think when I think Wednesday Addams. 😊 The 1960's was my introduction to the Addams Family and has always been my favorite version of these characters not just Wednesday. 🙂

Thank you! That's exactly how I feel! I always felt like there is something off about Riccis and Moretz's Wednesdays (the only ones I've watched, I can't get myself to watch the Wednesday series tbh) because of the stark contrast to the 60's character. Her being so cold, emotionless, almost cruel and full of disdain even towards her family just didn't feel in line with Lisa's version and how I got to know and love Wednesday.

I stand by the fact: while it´s not the best depiction of the addams family, the animated wednesday 2019 had the most savage one liners. After being told by morticia to let her brother out of a grave, she answered: "You are weakening our gene-pool" That is insanely good.

the joke with the Addamses was that they did not realise they were odd, that got lost in newer adaptations. Sacrificing the comical part for a moral point. On brand for this decade, but a pitty for the original premise i think.

Christina Ricci is IMO the most iconic as the young to preteen version, Jenna Ortega just knocked out the park. Yeah there was some cheeky stuff in Wednesday, but I think Tim Burton definitely brought a new light to this iconic roll. In fact I'd say the entire cast was brilliant. And including Christina in the show was genius.

I personally don't like the new wednesday as well. I just cant help but feel that this is not the addams family i loved. They were always odd but its always them vs the normies. You cant get that feeling in a magical setting filled with magical beings around them?? Like This has to be as normal of a setting to feel like its a addams family vs outside situation tbh. I find it so out of character for wednesday to be so rude to morticia too at the first episode. She would absolutely hate going to a new school too cus she does not believe she did anything wrong by standing up for her brother, but she would never be so rude to her parents, specifically saying things in an attempt to hurt them in a bad way (try to be morbid yes, but not out of badness) if she knew the thing she says would actually hurt her mother. Morticia and gomez dont even behave like themselves too so the whole show is just OOC for me.

@@Strannnge I agree, and her hate has literally no foundation in this show. Is it fair for Wed to get annoyed with her family, sure? But annoyed because they’re trying to control you? What have they done to control Wed in any way. They sent her to their high school after trying like 6 other schools. The angst she has with her parents could be justified if the show presented a believable reason, but it didn’t.

Y’all fail to realize that writers, producers, and directors have the ultimate say of how the character is supposed to be. If they don’t like even a small facial expression they will re do the take. It’s less about the actresses and more about the each series or movie.
