@@trinaq I also want to credit Seth Green as Velma's love interest Patrick in Monsters Unleashed. Not only for the Buffy connection between him and Sarah, but I think he and Linda were believable as strong-willed yet awkward smart people trying to navigate their feelings for each other. Honestly I feel like the 2000s version is a great example of how you can add adult humor, modernity, and even change the medium of something (live action instead of animation) but do it well. It's keeping the heart of the source material that's important.

I find it kind of eye-rolling that Velma (2023) tries so hard to be "edgy" and "adult" when James Gunn had already thought that up *years ago,* but was back then denied the vision. And I'm sure even *that* would've been better than what Mindy Kaling thought she was giving us, because like you said, despite the innuendos present in Gunn's films (many of which go over your head as a kid but as an adult WOW), at least they're on characters *clearly* written and portrayed as over 21. 🙄

I think the reason why people are upset about the race swapping in "Velma" when they didn't care about past race swapping is simple: In "Velma" the characters constantly talk about race and constantly disparage other people for their race. Whereas in other versions of the story where Velma was race swapped, it wasn't a giant focus. She was just Velma, and the characters' races didn't matter.

@@beysmentssecuritycamera6013 Maybe a small percentage of the people talking about it now were talking about it way back then. So yeah, for those people, they would of course have different reasons. And then a lot of my friends heard about it purely from word of mouth. Plus a lot of acquaintances of mine who don't even really watch these kinds of shows or care about cartoons at all know about it only because of the backlash after the show aired. So yeah. "A Pup Named Scooby Doo" has the cutest incarnation of Velma 😍🥰 "Mystery Incorporated" Velma feels like the best example of what a modern version of the character can & should be. Be Cool Scooby Doo holds the blueprint for a modern Velma. Funny, snarky, uses detective work, and isn't in a cringe "funny" short-lived romance with Shaggy where she can be heard saying inane things like "happy month anniversary" to Shaggy regarding their one month old relationship. I think the main reason no one (save for a very specific group that will take issue no matter what) cared when the race swapping happened before is because unlike in Velma 2023, their whiteness or lack thereof wasn’t made the central point of their character. POC characters can definitely have their race be integral to their character, but in Velma it comes off as obnoxious and pandering, and in general many of us are kind of tired of it. We want to see ourselves in creative media where we’re allowed to just be people who happen to be POC, where we can save the world, go on quests, or experience stupid high school drama without the story revolving around skin color. I would’ve been completely fine if Velma, Daphne, and Norvilles races had no bearing on their personal conflict, hell I would’ve been more into it. That isn’t the issue. The issue is that it IS integral to their characters in all the wrong ways.

This is really well said! I think race swapping to add diversity can be a good thing. But, when it becomes the focus, in a unsubtle and non-nuanced way, it feels as if it's solely to pander or adhere to stereotypes.
@TheImperialSenate
@TheImperialSenate Жыл бұрын
Even having race be an important factor for the story isn't a problem, if it is handled in a way that makes sense, respects the older works, and fits the existing characters' personalities and background. For example, say Shaggy was changed to be from a culture that hates dogs. That could be some potential nice backstory about why he became so close with Scooby despite his cultural stigma. But if it's just used for some lazy stereotypical jokes about that culture hating dogs or making Shaggy a dog hater who hates putting up with Scooby's antics, or a platform for the writers to make annoying edgy racist jokes, then it would be a bad thing to do.

About Daphne being a damsel-in-distress in the original series, I don't recall her being one, I just recently rewatched the original first two seasons (perfect timing for this video, lol), and the only episodes I can think of where she was a "damsel-in-distress-ish" was when she fell down in that trap door in "Hassle in the Castle," so she was lost from the gang for awhile. However, that doesn't automatically make her a DID, cuz she managed to find the gang later on - in her OWN TERMS. She hits Shaggy with a vase, thinking it was the Ghost. I mean, original Daphne already took matters into her own hands. The other episode I can think of where one could argue "she was a DID" was that episode with the vampire, werewolf and another ghost? where she doesn't really run with the rest of the gang in that drawbridge (she just stands there still, lol), so the monsters raise the bridge, she falls toward the castle gates and she's captured by the monsters. But when Fred and Velma find her, Daphne warns them to not come nearer, for "it's a trap," only for the door to then quickly slam shut, trapping all three inside the cell. So, it wasn't just Daphne, but Fred and Velma became damsels-in-distress that moment on, only to then be rescued by Shaggy and Scooby. Those are the only episodes I could think of and unless I'm mistaken, but I really don't get where the whole "Daphne is a damsel-in-distress" came from. She did take matters into her own hands when she could. I think it's just because she's pretty and rich, and she got lost from the gang on very few occasions, that people have to make the case of, "Oh, poor little rich girl, who can't do things on her own." ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The 2002/04 Daphne did not really subvert her original counterpart, cuz Daphne was never a damsel-in-distress to begin with.

I think my favorite versions would be the 90's direct to video (dtv) Velma, and the original live action Velma. The dtv movies were something I grew up on, with Zombie Island scaring me (in the best way possible) because it wasn't some greedy realtor or disgraced figure in town in a mask. And the original live action movies just sort of...fit the bill for me as a kid. Seeing the characters come to life, to not just be cartoons, was amazing to me, because little 6 year old me didn't know that could happen. I saw the original series before anything, and yeah, I enjoyed it. But not like the movies I mentioned. Though, I will say, without seeing the source material first, I probably wouldn't have loved the movies as much, just because I wouldn't have had a sort of build-up to the more "frightening" (that's how I saw them at the time) plots.

There was also a Scooby Doo fan movie that was a kickstarter project back in 2020, I believe. It was stalled because of the pandemic but I think they finished it and it’s available to watch now. I haven’t watched it but there was a lot of promo for it so would love to know what you think of that project!

I didn’t really care for a Pup Named Scooby’s Velma because she tended to hold off on information until the reveal, sometimes information you’d have no idea of knowing. “That piece of the monster’s costume that fell off of them, well I did a chemical analyses of it off screen and figured out it was fake.” Of course, anything compared to Velma the tv show looks like a masterpiece now.

I have never viewed Fred as a “stereotypical white guy” though.. I just find him goofy and charming. Growing up.. I actually identifies with Velma (even though don't look like her).. for the longest time until she became a character that “for sure Indian-American women can relate to”. Seems like they made the character not inclusive at all -.- Idk where this thing about that a character MUST look like you to relate to them.. I find race swapping in ANY race racist when it just want to be relatable to the race it swapped in :(

My main problem with race bending is how lazily it’s often done. Some companies I won’t mention seem to think changing a character’s race and then basing their entire personality around that one thing counts as character building. I don’t know about you, but I feel like people of color deserve well thought out characters rather than empty gestures.

1) This such a fun idea. I'd love to see it done with Daphne! 2) I'm gonna defend (cringe, I know) Mindy's Velma. It DOES have potential. I think part of the issue is how poor it is at story telling. At its core, Scooby-Doo is about MYSTERY. Velma '23 doesn't show that well at all so there's no suspense or buildup. I think if the show fixed this aspect, it could improve (in addition to not making race, sex, and "wokeness" the focus of every joke)!
@KatieLHall-fy1hw
@KatieLHall-fy1hw Жыл бұрын
I agree, I think it has the potential to get better, but for me, the trashing of all the characters is hard to watch. Scooby Doo for me always had characters you could root for. In Velma everyone is just so nasty to each other i truly don’t care what happens to them. Not the show for me. But maybe the next version of Scooby Doo will have a different take on everyone without the nastiness!

@@KatieLHall-fy1hw That's a fair point and I agree. A show can critique its characters without making it seem like the they should be hated. Making the characters so unlikeable that the audience doesn't want to root for them or be invested in their story is counterintuitive.

I'm really glad you gave 2010 Mystery Incorporated Velma a good rating. When it comes to being meddling teenagers, I think Mystery Inc. captured that aspect of the characters the best. It made the characters feel like they're actual teenagers which helped me relate a lot better when I was younger. It was a very impactful and well-thought out take on edgy teen drama while delivering a fantastic, sinister, bone-chilling story on mystery at the same time. In my opinion, it's one of the best incarnations of Scooby-Doo and it still holds up to this day!~

The main reason people hated the race swap for the Mindy show is because they were racist towards the white character. And that was the only reason Fred was keep white. To have a white person to be racist towards. Honestly if all the cast was race swapped and the show was funny and not sexual. No one would have cared. But because the show seems to have been made solely to be a message or an agenda against current irl society, the show was hated. And those red flags popped up in the trailer, in interviews, etc. That's why people hated the show. That's why people were uncomfortable watching it. Cuz it's general just a Mean show. And it's mean against a specific group the most.

a pup named scooby doo holds a very special place in my heart because it was my absolute favorite show as a kid at one point. i hated missing it and often would stay up late to catch reruns. i loved each character, but if all velma said was "jinkies" i think i'd hate the character and eventually the show. you didn't really see smart girls on televison back then which always made velma so cool and an inspiration. a character who can only say one thing is a joke and making the smart girl a joke character would basically say that girls being smart are jokes, because like that would ever happen. i'm glad that the story writers fought against that idea, otherwise the character and the show would be so much worse.

From what I understand about animation, since the process is so time intensive, it is common practice to start working on the second season before the first has finished airing. So the publicity, good or bad, has little to do with it getting a second season. Now if it gets a third, that's all the hat watchers fault.

I think the series 'mystery incorporated' (2010) took the perfect direction 'maturing' the themes of the story. The subversion of the supernatural elements being real while jumping off the pretense that it's always just a selfish individual in the town who's the real monster I really enjoyed watching it as an older teen. The themes were actually pretty grim at times without feeling too edgy. I would have loved a modern Velma centric show (even with more 'adult' humor and exploring her sexuality) with a similar spooky & dark tone using those elements to further develop her character in ways the 2010 show didn't

Could you make a ranking/style analysis of Fred and Daphne's outfits and why they're the only ones from the gang who kept having different styles of clothing, at least in the late 90s and early 2000s, when Velma and Shaggy kept their original outfits? My theory is because Fred and Daphne's outfits are the most reminiscent of the time it came out. If you google 1969 fashion for men and women, you will come across Fred and Daphne's look-a-like outfits. So, I guess with the late 90s/early 2000s incarnations of Scooby-Doo, the animators and the costume designer of the live-action movies must have felt to give Fred and Daphne clothes that would be more contemporary and relatable to audiences of that time. This is a late comment, so it's most likely that Tess won't view it by now, but for the early birds in her next video, please suggest her this next topic. Ever since I was a kid, I've always been curious as to why Fred and Daphne were the only ones who had different outfits in the late 90s to early 2000s.

I’d guess because Fred and Daphne are the most “normal” kids in the group. While shaggy and Velma don’t care about their looks, Daphne is a fashionista and Fred a typical teenager. Thus, I think it makes sense that their outfits would be changed and they’d be the ones audiences were supposed to resonate with.

I find it interesting that Velma is the most commonly race-swapped character of the Scooby-Doo gang, and how she might've even been originally conceived as being Asian in the initial stages. Short of Mindy Kaling's version, where the race swap feels more for woke points than any true diversification, I've never had a problem with her not being "white". And if I'm allowed to go on a bit of a tangent, I feel like Shaggy is the one character who feels like he needs to be white, rather than Fred. The only reason I think Velma kept Fred white was so they could have a punching bag for all their "priviledged white guy" "jokes".

I'm pretty sure that we can all agree that Mindy Kailing's Velma deserves the worse ranking on this list. Her writing was very repetitive and she wrote every single character in the show really awfully. and yes, the quote "If she had been depicted from the very beginning of the franchise, she never would've made it out of the 70's". That's literally true because her play on the character is humorless and it just ruins her character not only in this putrid show, but also it ruins the Scooby Doo passion as a whole.
