I think the Misfits reference is so funny. One of the first them live was at the Fireside Bowl in Chicago in the late 90's. They called themselves Teenagers from Mars. Glen was still the drummer and Pete from the band Oblivion was the singer.

Private Eye was the first song I heard that I loved from the very moment i heard it and never stopped listening to. The guitar riff is what makes that song for me, it sounds urgent, makes you want to stop what you're doing and just listen.

Loved this conversation; you dudes are fun and funny, but as someone who was late to the AT party, it’s kind of funny because when friends learn I enjoy AT, they send me records I don’t yet have. So far, I’ve got about half of what you guys have chatted about. Much love.

You can never go bad with an Alkaline Trio album! You have one that you like that kind of sticks out to you? They are simultaneously very consistent and willing to try new sounds. Pretty unique band. And thanks for the compliment! We'd like to think we're pretty cool, lol

Love Alkaline Trio. I've seen them a few times including once with The Original Misfits. And their fantastic live. Also can't tell you how many times I've listen to various compilation albums with Alkaline Trio on it. And their always the highlight. Just yesterday I was listening to The Green Album and Alkaline Trio's cover of Moving Right Along was hands down the best song on the album.

It was interesting to see an interview with Matt Skiba where he said the 3 albums he would give someone new to the band was Goddamit , This Addiction and Blood, hair, Eyeballs and that he can't listen to Good Mourning. Id struggle to rank the albums as i love them all except Agony and Irony that i just can't stand at all for some reason

@@thepunkrockreview I have been a fan since 2002 and felt that crimson was the first album I was disappointed with. Sadly it’s been consistently downhill for me. But each album tends to have some good songs. I think I just prefer the more raw sound and production style of the earlier stuff, sounds more punk. I much prefer the way skiba sang pre-good mourning. It was deeper and more subtle vibrato. That just changed a lot over time. Dan on the other hand always gets better at everything.

Okay, I was pumped for this episode being that Alk3 is my favorite fucking band of all time. I mean, to break it down for you, Green Day came first and opened the pop punk flood gates. But then in highschool I found Alk3 and they inspired my whole aesthetic, being that I was always a weirdo punk rock kid who wrote poems and short stories and was I always into the dark side of life. So, I really resonated with Matt Skibas lyrics and vocal styling. I also love Dan's voice and style as well. They just both have very unique vocals and lyrical prose, they're lyrics totally inspired my whole writing style. And I've seen them live over 30 times, 😂 But on with the show... 1. GODDAMMIT 2. S/T 3. MAYBE I'LL CATCH FIRE 4. FROM HERE TO INFIRMARY 5. HOT WATER MUSIC SPLIT 6. GOOD MOURNING 7. THIS ADDICTION 8. CRIMSON 9. MY SHAME IS TRUE 10. IS THIS THING CURSED? Also, I love Halloween live at the Metro so much. SKIBA RULES!!!!

@@roryohell your list is good man, I could easily change mine around to look more like yours. I think I like FHTI the most because it was the first trio album I heard (in 2002) and at that time I was all about NOFX, Bad religion, lag wagon and the like. I wasn’t very into emo and didn’t like bands like the used and all that. I felt like alkaline trio was more musically like punk rock but had that dark and emotional content that kind of had them straddling that emo / punk line. Songs like Mr Chainsaw, Armageddon, take lots of alcohol, and crawl or just so good. Love the way that album was mixed (guitars are loud in the mix and vocals are doubled in a cool way). Good mourning was very cool and the skiba rasp was unfortunate for him but sound very cool on that record. I feel like his vocals have never quite been as good since then. Compare his vocals on MICF to anything after good mourning and it’s quite different. I liked the deeper register and a little vibrato, sounded more like the dammed or misfits, a bit more ominous, but I digress. I also love the acoustic split with 7 seconds. That album coupled with my divorce thrusted me into playing music and covering tone of those songs.

@slashtrio thanks man, yeah I'm more of the old-school Trio fan. The first songs I heard by them were Goodbye forever (one of my faves) and Radio, than followed by Maybe I'll Catch Fire. And I bought Goddamnit and fell in love. Definitely, love their old raw punk sound more, but I also love their evolution. Hell yes, FHTI is amazing too. I love that whole Era, I own the Halloween at the Metro DVD and watch it a lot. I also love that Kevin seconds split, Skibas solo stuff is fucking stellar. 👌 I love mostly anything by the trio. I've seen them over 30x no exeragerration. Yet somehow never met any of them or even have a trio tatt. Of course, I'm not a tattoo person. I just fucking love great original punk rock and I'm a dark creative artist so Alk3 inspired my writing style and everything else.

Man I posted my album list when you guys were live and I was at work so I couldn’t listen. I think goddammit is a grower. My introduction to them was in 2002 via FHTI, then I of course got MICF and goddammit. Both sound quite a bit different than FHTI with goddammit sounding very different. I didn’t care for GD at first but I quickly got into it once it grew on me. I like the off the rails sound of it and I don’t think skiba sings poorly on it, he just sounds a bit different, screams more.

Oh his vocals are awful on that album, lol. Rob explained why a little bit, but it doesn't change the fact that they don't sound good. But I mean, the worst Alkaline Trio album is better than most bands discographies, sooo, lol yeah 🍕🍕🍕🍕

@@thepunkrockreview well it’s a matter of opinion. I don’t think they are awful and I’m sure many trio fans would agree. They are not out of tune just different. He yells and screams more. @@thepunkrockreview okay man, I’ll take your word for it. I had never heard that before. I stand corrected sir 😊. I was a huge fan for a long time and it seemed like most hardcore fans thought that (GD) was the best album, even though I preferred FHTI and good mourning. I knew all about why his vocals were toast on good morning (the skiba rasp that was apparently caused by acid reflux). I read interviews where he said he was very bummed and disappointed with the good mourning sessions but that jerry fin (I think that was the producer) had pushed him to make the most of it. But yea, never heard about his disappointment with GD. Somewhere along the way I either heard or read that Dan didn’t like his vocals on that album, particularly the song “enjoy your day”. His lisp was more prominent maybe. So what do you think of the song that was dropped today ? As an old fan it sounds like it could have been on either of the last couple albums. Good song, very poppy.

@@thepunkrockreview hey man, I just watched the whole band-produced documentary for Goddammit that the band released as part of the re-release / remastering of the album back in 2008ish. I don’t hear skiba saying that he was unhappy with that album or his vocals. He does say, along with the producer, that Matt had come back from tour and tried to drop the vocals but was unhappy due to his voice being strained from touring, but then came back a week later and knocked it out, with the producer further remarking that it was one of the better vocal performances he had ever seen. Moreover Dan said that Goddammit was his favorite trio record. I mean if you have the quote from skiba saying he really disliked the final vocals on the album then all credit to you, but I’m just not finding information to support that. I get that you don’t like that album and don’t like the vocal style of the time, but obviously many long time fans put this album in the top 3 of their discography, and the fact that they took the time to re-release it and talk about each song and where the inspiration came from. As far as vocals, if you watch all the live versions they show of the band playing the songs from Goddammit back in the day Matt’s vocals sound pretty much just like the album. So that was just how he sang at that time, much more screaming and yelling but also melodic. I’ll put the link to the documentary below if you haven’t seen it, it’s pretty good.
