I'm a '90s punk kids too and I'm definitely not in the scene anymore, but I've brought my kids to plenty of shows, and it's changed a lot. Metal has gotten even more exclusionary over time, but some of the edges of the punk scene have softened while other parts have sharpened or hardened. Just wanted to share my experience from the Seattle area scene.

So Fear, with their homophobic songs (I'm not familiar with the band), that was acceptable because of the times, but not Skrewdriver? Or Sex Pistols (along with many like Motorhead(Lemme was friends with ISD btw)) they can wear swastikas because they're just "being annoying." Right. The hypocrisy is deep. Good call on that Good Charlotte induction, the most mainstream/attention seeking band outside of Avril Livegne in the early to mid 2000s. But, she's probably on the wall next to them.

The point I always bring up when people start to gatekeep punk rock is this: Before the music industry and radio stations wanted to make it more commercially viable and distance themselves from the "punk stigma" by relabeling some of it as "New Wave", bands like Blondie and The Talking Heads were considered punk bands. Punk rock in its infancy didn't have a specific "sound" or a "look", and was much more diverse and inclusive than it became after that initial first wave of bands. Yes, there were bands like The Clash, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, The Dead Boys, etc., but they weren't solely what punk rock was, and when people try to say "x" band isn't punk rock based on some arbitrary criteria that wasn't even present when punk rock was arguably at its commercial peak, I point them back to the history of punk rock itself.

Hmmmm, you should probably watch The Decline of Western Civilization. The early LA punk scene was just as bad or worse. They had an entire crew dedicated to beating up "posers" and specifically targeted dudes with long hair, they did the exact same shit. Violence and rape were VERY common back then in the scene. Look up the Suicidal Cycos gang. Maybe where you're from it was different or you came along after things got toned down, but in all the big scenes like LA and NY it was definitely NOT all lovey-dovey and acceptance. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the fact you've had nothing but positive experiences, but your comment is coming from a very...uninformed point of view when you consider the scene on a larger scale than your own personal experience.

I wouldn't frame it so much as "You can't cancel bands for what their views were when it was somewhat acceptable" so much as "If they aren't truly hateful and grew past it" kind of deal. Remember, in their early years a lot of these bands were 14, 15. 16 year old dudes and gals. Idk about you all, but I said and did some pretty shitty things at that age that I've regretted for a very long time.

I agree with him on skrewdriver, thing is the most public former member is mark radcliffe is a British national treasure quit the band due to their politics later went to work for factory records and radio one. I applaud the guy because he actually became one of the most ardent anti nazi's in the uk punk scene worked with bands like chumbawumba(worked with), Magazine (worked with), cardiacs (worked with) and white town(championed them on his radio show) etc. apparently it was really heavy for him because the boneheads used to send him death threats for years etc.

Good Charlotte technically came out of the same scene as bands like Pg.99, Strike Anywhere, etc... Northern, VA. They were dudes who came from punk rock and hardcore backrounds. They just fancied some rock startdom along the way.

Elite PUNKERS! (Me in Highskool) would be "They're not punk!!! How could they be in there! Cause they bought and used hairspray for their spikes also!?" Now... sensible me is "HELLSCHYEAS they go in there!! People were coming up to MOHAWK me with PUNK dripping and spewing from all points and asked me about punk and bands... I started talking all the bands and stuff and they're "yea we like Good Charlotte" I didnt have cable so I had no clue whom they were. Saw Benji and was "they must like Casualties and Exploited" When I finally heard them I was UUGGGGGHHHHH THEY CAME UP TO ME ABOUT PUNK!?!? And now the sensible person is YES THEY DID!!! AND YOU KNO WHAT!!??? if it wasnt for the Madden Bros!!! They would've never said "you like punk?" And been curious or cared! GC does belong in there. They hit a peak that few do!!🤘🎸🤘🎸🤘🍻🍻 I'm not a fan! Im just curtis g the grass so the SNAKE-like gate keepers and actually have food for thought
@RevStickleback

Punk gatekeeping seems to be much more of a thing in the USA, where many seem to have the attitude that hardcore is somehow the only real punk. To me Crass are punk, The Toy Dolls are punk, The Damned are punk, Rumkicks are punk, Blink-182 are punk, Black Flag and The Untertones are punk, and yes, Green Day are punk. They certainly don't all sound the same, and many punks might hate some of them, but it doesn't stop them being punk. Punk is about what they have in common musically, not what's different.

@@brandonlatus2218 Even if you call them pop-punk, it's still a punk sub genre, therefore part of punk. "Are they punk?" has to be answered objectively. If proto-punk, the stuff that punk came from, is punk, then pop-punk, a genre that came out of punk, has to be too. How much a punk museum should devote to a sub-genre is a different matter.
