I'm a '90s punk kids too and I'm definitely not in the scene anymore, but I've brought my kids to plenty of shows, and it's changed a lot. Metal has gotten even more exclusionary over time, but some of the edges of the punk scene have softened while other parts have sharpened or hardened. Just wanted to share my experience from the Seattle area scene.

It was weird the differences in the crowd at the Misfits show seeing them at almost 50. The closer to the stage, the more upper upper class you got, and the farther into the bleachers you got, the more punker we got. But when Teenager's from Mars, or Green Hell, or Bullet came on, even the folk up front dressed a little more well to do were singing word for word with Glen and rocking with Jerry and Doyle. Changed my mind about a couple of things that night.

The point I always bring up when people start to gatekeep punk rock is this: Before the music industry and radio stations wanted to make it more commercially viable and distance themselves from the "punk stigma" by relabeling some of it as "New Wave", bands like Blondie and The Talking Heads were considered punk bands. Punk rock in its infancy didn't have a specific "sound" or a "look", and was much more diverse and inclusive than it became after that initial first wave of bands. Yes, there were bands like The Clash, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, The Dead Boys, etc., but they weren't solely what punk rock was, and when people try to say "x" band isn't punk rock based on some arbitrary criteria that wasn't even present when punk rock was arguably at its commercial peak, I point them back to the history of punk rock itself.

I applaud the guy because he actually became one of the most ardent anti nazi's in the uk punk scene worked with bands like chumbawumba(worked with), Magazine (worked with), cardiacs (worked with) and white town(championed them on his radio show) etc. apparently it was really heavy for him because the boneheads used to send him death threats for years etc.

Hmmmm, you should probably watch The Decline of Western Civilization. The early LA punk scene was just as bad or worse. They had an entire crew dedicated to beating up "posers" and specifically targeted dudes with long hair, they did the exact same shit. Violence and rape were VERY common back then in the scene. Look up the Suicidal Cycos gang. Maybe where you're from it was different or you came along after things got toned down, but in all the big scenes like LA and NY it was definitely NOT all lovey-dovey and acceptance. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the fact you've had nothing but positive experiences, but your comment is coming from a very...uninformed point of view when you consider the scene on a larger scale than your own personal experience.

People called The Clash punk...in my opinion they were WAY more than punk( if even punk at all aside from their views and "style." From what I've gathered punk, it's a modified version of what Spicoli said "Well Stu I'll tell you, being "punk" is not a sport, it's a way of life, it's no hobby. "You can't cancel bands..." "We're not allowing Skrewdriver in." It sounds like you can cancel bands! So Fear, with their homophobic songs (I'm not familiar with the band), that was acceptable because of the times, but not Skrewdriver? Or Sex Pistols (along with many like Motorhead(Lemme was friends with ISD btw)) they can wear swastikas because they're just "being annoying." Right. The hypocrisy is deep. Good call on that Good Charlotte induction, the most mainstream/attention seeking band outside of Avril Livegne in the early to mid 2000s. But, she's probably on the wall next to them.

I wouldn't frame it so much as "You can't cancel bands for what their views were when it was somewhat acceptable" so much as "If they aren't truly hateful and grew past it" kind of deal. Remember, in their early years a lot of these bands were 14, 15. 16 year old dudes and gals. Idk about you all, but I said and did some pretty shitty things at that age that I've regretted for a very long time.

Im with mike here. He builds a museum of what, as one of the most experts in the punk scene, he considers to be worthy of showcasing. Not only with a musical criteria, but with having in mind what punk, as a left-winged ideology is. Those are two separated things. So following the ideology criteria, maybe Bob Marley is more punk than Screwdrivers. So Im with Mike, again, he puts in the museum whatever he thinks to be deserving it. I would include green Day for sure though.

I believe the term he's looking for is "exceptionalism" he likes a band, and wants to include them for personal enjoyment reasons, not always historical ones. The issue in that is it prevents context when explaining content vs. imagery. Or ideals vs. shock value. People throw around the term "separate the artist from the art" so casually, and never really circle back to it, seemingly to avoid self examination.

Fat Mike isn't stupid. He knows putting those lame mainstream bands in (Avenged Sevenfold?) is what's going to drive traffic. It has nothing to do with "punk", it's selling those $20 tickets. In the future those bands he's cancelling will be considered the "real punk rock".

Punk gatekeeping seems to be much more of a thing in the USA, where many seem to have the attitude that hardcore is somehow the only real punk. To me Crass are punk, The Toy Dolls are punk, The Damned are punk, Rumkicks are punk, Blink-182 are punk, Black Flag and The Untertones are punk, and yes, Green Day are punk. They certainly don't all sound the same, and many punks might hate some of them, but it doesn't stop them being punk. Punk is about what they have in common musically, not what's different.

@@brandonlatus2218 Even if you call them pop-punk, it's still a punk sub genre, therefore part of punk. "Are they punk?" has to be answered objectively. If proto-punk, the stuff that punk came from, is punk, then pop-punk, a genre that came out of punk, has to be too. How much a punk museum should devote to a sub-genre is a different matter.

Used to be a big punk/NOFX fan, still am to a degree but Mike is such a hypocrite....i remember buying heavy petting Zoo and in the notes he banged on about mtv etc to quit bugging them and that they dont do mainstream yet years later they had their own TV show, music videos on MTV and a book....not to mention that in that book he says how he was a poser and would wear punk band t shirts despite never hearing the bands....he also said in the book after hearing suffer by bad religion he wanted NOFX to imitate their sound....how punk.... Liberal animation is a good punk album but most that follwed wasn't....they certainly changed their sound to be radio friendly after Ribbed...

I dont see it that way. At the time he diddnt want to be on MTV and radio and was happy with their level of success without it. Decades later he wanted to do a show for whatever reason. Point is, different time, different person and different circumstances. Things in punk are not what they were in 94. As for the other stuff, I really have nothing to say. It is clear that he is a true fan of music. That is beyond question. I sure dont miss the days of being quized about what bands shirt you were wearing. "oh you like what ever band. Name every 4th song on every album in alphabetical order. Oh you cant. Poser". But I dont like mainsteam pop culture exploiting and commodification of sub cultures. Has happened to everything I have been heavily into at one time or another. I also dont like fashion punks. Sorry ranting now
