I think Snow White suffers a issue that a lot of early Disney Animated films had in that the story is put on the backburner while the animation takes more of the focus of the movie. That's probably why a lot of the scenes drag, because it's made not with the intention of telling a story, it's mainly to showcase the animation.

When I recently watched it after watching a bunch of old shorts made in the decades leading up, it makes so much sense. The format animation was before this was 10 minutes that were either a pretty song thing or a gag. Little stories, one continuous sequence. The pacing of snow white, especially the songs, feels like a whole bunch of animated shorts strung together - early disney even has awkward, too-long-by-modern-standards crossfades where they've finished one sequence and haven't figured out how to smoothly transition to the next. I'm not arguing that the pacing of Snow White is Good Actually - it does in fact drag out and end up sorta awkward and stilted by modern film standards - but I fully understand how and why it happened, in the film context of the day

That is actually typical pacing in those times. It isn't really much as the story being put on the backburner, that is just how the people those days want their stories done. Modern films can actually be too frenetic. This is really more on the culture and taste at those times. The scenes "drag" but that is what people at those times wants. They do this on live action films too. Even in their writings. This is mainly because, things are new back then and many things presented on screen is something most people haven't seen, known and experienced before. There was no internet and television is not common and quite primitive. Movie viewing is really a very unique experience. So, if there are some beautiful scenery depicted, the audience wants the film to linger so they could take their time to enjoy it. Same for the emotional moments. They to bathe these moments. Of course, taste and culture have changed now. Films and animation is incredibly common and you probably watched dozens if not hundreds of hours of them right at home before you even see a film in theaters. Beautiful scenery and intricate artwork aren't going to keep attention anymore, nor would you want the film to linger on them.

The most interesting thing about Sponge Out of Water is how much content was scrapped. A lot of people probably know about "Thank Gosh It's Monday" was scrapped for time, but what interests me the most is how some of the deleted scenes expanded on the villain's backstory, which probably could've helped give the film more weight to it, but another thing is that there was a cut scene of Squidward doing a little "interpretive dance" in the live action setting, yet one of the lines from that scene still made it into the film (albeit during the end credits). Tho nothing will ever top the first movie removing a scene of CGI Sandy with a gun.

From what I know, the creative team behind the movie had almost no control behind what made it onto the film because out of touch executives just kept asking for this and that to be included, with no regards for how that would actually fit in with the overall movie. And it seemed to be very hit or miss, where it worked well or decently in the first half, but their demands and "ideas" likely became so overwhelming in the second half that it started to feel incongruent with the rest of the movie.

Man, that scene in Chicken Run in the beginning when Mrs. Tweedy kills that chicken, followed by Ginger crying will forever live in my mind When I was little I was scrolling through the TV because I was bored, and I found that this movie was playing on a channel I never watched. This was my first time seeing this film, and wouldn't you know it, it was this exact scene playing. Man, what a first impression for 8 year old me, huh?

All good that you didn’t click with Secret of Kells, but I want to sell it to anyone who hasn’t seen it to give it a chance as it’s still probably my second favorite Cartoon Saloon movie after Wolfwalkers. The thing you’re missing is that it’s way more than a father-son conflict, it’s a conflict of the old vs new traditions, of oral history vs written history, of paganism vs religion. It’s an incredibly ambitious first movie and I found the ending incredibly satisfying because we were literally flipping the page in the history books. It’s definitely not for everyone but I can guarantee you’ll never see a movie like it.

I totally get your criticisms of the secret of kells in fact I pretty much agree with them, but even if the animation was the main thing carrying it, surely that in combination with the fact that nothing else is particularly bad about it would be enough to get it a little higher. At least above snow white, they were both made to showcase their animation and the secret of kells does both that and the story better, so I don't see why it would be below it That said, though I disagree with that one thing, this is a pretty great, well made and entertaining video. Good job and thank you

There's not a huge gap between Kells and Snow White. I just let that one rank higher since I got more enjoyment from the jokes and the interactions between the characters, plus it being a big piece of animation history gave it a bit more of a novelty. Everything ranked above them had a story I was invested in and emotional beats that landed without anything to sink the experience for me.

Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay. Not as good as the Mask of the Phantom but also very good there is Superman vs The Elite. Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox. All Star Superman. Justice League: New Frontier.

I personally disagree with your thoughts on Sponge Out of Water's second half, as I enjoy the movie as a whole, preferring its characterisation of Plankton and liking its comedy just a smidge more than its predecessor, even if the original has the stronger story and message. Yeah I feel like Sponge out of Water gets a bit too much hate. I feel like it does more unique stuff than the first movie which when you look at it is really just a glorified road-trip movie (a great one but still feels cliche). I also think the movie uses it’s cast better than the first movie as well as have a more entertaining villain (plankton is a bit too generic tbh in the first movie). I do think the third act of the first movie makes the first one better than the second one, but I say it’s significantly closer than most claim

If it's any consolation, I watched Ice Age: Continental Drift numerous times, so I hope that evens out its disappearance from the IA part. Sad you're missing on Captain Gutt, but... still. I have a very soft spot for Ice Age, the first 3 movies in particular but I did find enjoyment in the 4th one. I love Manfred's design and his journey throughout the saga from a troubled loner to a loving father given his past. It's also one of the few trio dynamics across animated movie franchises, with the only other competition being Finding Nemo, even if both moves has their titular characters separated. They use the Freudian Trio trope pretty well imo. I'm also a sucker for Scrat's antics and it's facinating seeing a 3D attempt at Looney Tunes style comedy this early into the medium's life. And the setting is still very unique to this day with very few other movies taking place in the time period. Collision Course can go extinct for all I care though.

You know it’s funny, the only part of Coraline that scared me as a child that still uneases me the most to this day is the one open mouthed ghost girl. Don’t know what it is about it but it’s so creepy and uncanny with the way they designed her.

For me it was mostly just kinda creepy throughout I guess and also pretty scary and sad because of the themes of losing parents, but the scene with the mice in the circus show genuinely creeped me the fuck out, cuz the characters were so entertained but I just thought it was all so creepy. There will be creepy shit happening but the main character doesn’t see anything wrong with it. That’s why I think it’s so creepy, because we all relate to Coraline but when in the other world getting everything she wants, we see how truly twisted her desires are. Like the other Wybie being silenced by the other mother and staying quiet through the whole film Coraline sees nothing wrong with it, it’s unnatural and wrong for him to just be quiet forever but Coraline doesn’t notice, because that’s the way she wants it. She gets everything she wants and it’s creepy and wrong and unnatural, but she’s a child getting what she wants so she doesn’t even notice nor care at first.

I’m with you on that Ice Age bit to where I liked the movie but the only thing I didn’t like was Scrat and that was because of only two things, A: his screaming, which makes my throat ache now because of it because man, imagine how many lozenges and all of that throat remedies they must’ve given to his VA for doing a lot of screams and to me, his scream alone from the first two movies alone to me sounded like they video taped a super crazy mother going through pain and suffering while in labor with a kid, like if they didn’t give him a voice/scream at all, I would’ve liked the character almost a whole lot and B: the way he looked in the first movie was scary to me and that was because of the animation a lone in that department, thank goodness both computers and its animation got a whole lot better throug time tho especially with how the other movies looked different than the first movie and that was alone because of the evolution of both the computer programming and it’s animation style as well!!! And I liked Sid but I agree with you that I liked/loved both Manny and Diego more than Sid, no offense to him tho but still, he’s an okay character in the end in my book and IMO, I like Sid way more than Scrat!!!

I was stockholm-syndromed into liking Open Season because i watched that movie like four times a year - I have two brothers who often didn't wanna watch the movies I wanted to and vice versa, but this was one we could usually agree on. Also i was a kid (3 when this one came out, though I don't think i watched it that young) so my humor was ass lol. I really remember liking the first... I don't know, ten minutes or so? Because i liked the bear's owner, but retrospectively I think I had a crush on her more than anything else I haven't watched it in at least five years though, so I'd probably think differently nowadays

Amazing twist and IMO the funniest Laika movie. 2:Coraline 9.5/10 You know why. 3:Kubo and the two strings 7/10 Pretty fun, good action, tho a little bit blue balled by the ending. 4:Missing Link 6.5/10 so yeah kinda predictable, but I think its the second funniest Laika movie. 5:Boxtrolls 6/10 not bad, but definitely my least favourite. With its main flaw being the one thing that drew me to Laika, its predictability.

I saw Ice Age as an kid and did based on the start not expect much, but the movie started to grow on me fast and i loved it overall. I Saw Despicable Me after being tired of minions everywhere, and was surprised how well they did fit in the first movie, also liked the plot and villain way more then expected With Snow White, it is taking it slow and the ending is kinda fast, but the movie keeps having so much charm. I also do not think it has aged bad, only the pacing is very off for modern times, but i love some things like the Hunter arc, and the nightmare stuff, and the queen is great as a villain there. The upcoming one keeps making fun of the old one while very likely being worse in most aspects and clearly lacking any charm

I feel like you should’ve put and watched at least Hakujaden (1958) since that was the debut film of Toei Animation (which is up there with Disney as one of the oldest animation studios in the world). You're honestly not missing much by not rewatching the sequels for Ice Age, anything after 2 or maybe 3 if we're generous is a pretty bad nosedive in quality, the single redeeming quality being scenes with Buck. Just seeing the first one is pretty much all the ice age you'll need.

I say 2 and 3 are the only ones that really matter. 4 and especially 5 just suck. Ice Age 1 feels pretty distinct from 2 and 3 tho so it’s probably better than watching the sequels

It could be argued that Nausicaa was actually the first Ghibli film, despite technically being released under Topcraft. Castle in the Sky was the first movie released by Studio Ghibli however.

A case can be made either way since Nausicaa got added to their lineup retroactively. I chose Castle in the Sky since it’d been years since I last saw it whereas I watched Nausicaa for the first time in December, plus Castle in the Sky is by far my preferred of the two

Not gonna lie, it is a little funny to hear you critiquing the characters, romance, and plot of Snow White, which was... a very literal, one to one adaption of the fairy tale story. Yeah the prince doesn't have a character and the evil stepmother's plan is strange, that's how fairy tales be. that's not the important part of the story. Personally, for this list of movies, Klaus and Castle in the Sky would be battling for first with Secret of Kells and Coraline close behind - which honestly just shows how my interests and preferences differ from yours! As far as other Laika films - I'd say Paranorman is very very solid as well, perhaps more comparable in quality to Kubo than Coraline (I do agree that between the two, Coraline is the stronger movie - Kubo has some great qualities but also has some parts that fall fairly flat imo) - and Boxtrolls I enjoyed a lot but probably lags behind the rest. Still haven't seen missing link, personally

If they’re flaws with the original story then yeah it’s not a fault of Disney if that’s just what they had to work with. But that still means they’re directly adapting the parts that don’t work for me without doing much to improve on them. I’ve been glad to see more support for Kells in the comments lately. I still like it but it’s cool to see how many more people really love it.

For the DC animated films recommendations: Batman & Mr Freeze Sub-Zero, Teen Titans Trouble in Tokyo, Batman vs Dracula, Ninja Batman, Superman Unbound, Batman under the red hood, Batman Beyond Return of the Joker, Justice League Flashpoint Paradox, Wonder Woman (2009),Superman Unbound, Batman/Superman public enemies, Batman & Superman World Finest and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 and 2 are the ones I recommend in my opinion to watch cause it's so good. Also, yes watch batman the animated series and the rest of DCAU (DC Animated Universe) the animated companions Superman the animated series, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited. It's basically DC's cinematic universe but good.

For as much as I ragged on Antz I don’t think it’s anywhere near Dreamworks’ worst. I’ve also had my eyes opened to Surfs Up 2 so Sony can definitely go lower than Open Season
