Hellfire. It’s always great when Disney is able to bring a darker edge to their animated films and do it so well. And it isn’t just amazing because it’s dark but because it’s a legitimately great song with a haunting performance by Tony Jay and stunning accompanying visuals personifying Frollo’s torment.

yeah this I feel like she underrated some of the notre dame songs. out there isn't an S but it definetly deserves an A, Quasimodo is probably the most like tortured Disney lead so his I want song hits a little harder for sure. also hellfire is S tier and I don't think I should even have to explain why
@hinasakukimi2 жыл бұрын
same! people always dismiss 'out there' as a typical "i want" song but for me its so different given how bleak quasi's life is. his yearning to just... go outside, for *one* day? that's so deeply tragic & something a lot of people take for granted (which quasi himself points out in the song). not to mention, tom hulce's voice is *incredible*, its up there with the likes of jodi benson and paige o'hara. he's in a very similar situation to rapunzel and i find 'when will my life begin' to be... incredibly subpar when compared to out there, the latter gets across the trauma of such a situation far better imo 🤷♀

Wow! My respect to you, Marlene. This was one mountain of an undertaking! And really fun to watch, too. Sure there were some misses (Pink Elephants as others have already pointed out) but you dove headfirst into this and came out swinging. Bravo. It was fun just to hear you do quick little reviews of each songs, and it is always a joy to hear you talk about Disney music, so these 75 minutes went by quickly. Also, would I love to see more? Hell yeah! Disney TV-shows next, please. Both the theme-songs (DuckTales is S-tier. I found the “heterossexual chorus” phenomena you mentioned multiple times to be fascinating. Even as a child, upon watching older Disney films, as the chorus came in, I often felt overwhelmed by it, as if the film was making a statement and sort of leaving me out of it. Kind of hitting me in the head with “don’t be fooled, this film was made by straight people for straight people; you’re not a part of this and you’ll never be; enjoy the film!” before opening the curtains. I really thought this was an irrational impulse on my part (as my feelings and thoughts are so often delegitimized as a queer viewer), so I was shocked when you vindicated these almost repressed feelings I had. It’s pretty obvious how Disney films (especially old ones) are built on a foundation of heteronormativity, leaving out those who don’t fit into that mold, but I feel like it’s still something not discussed about nearly enough - especially when it comes to identifying specific recurring elements which, purposefully or not, reinforce this heteronormative image (like the heterosexual chorus). I’d love it if you ever decide to make an entire video on the subject !

52:42 I get that "I'm still here" is dependent on each persons musical taste. I think what makes it hit so hard is the emotional power of its placement in the movie. Especially the part when Jim's father leaves and Jim running with the song ramping up, then Silver appears on screen beckoning to Jim, just tugs on my heart every time. It sounds like a classic misunderstood teen song from the 2000's and I am here for it.

I know I'm Still Here is not at all a typical Disney movie song, and I can see how it would feel out of place due to Treasure Planet not being a musical. I think both of those things add to it, tho. There's no focus taken away from it as a song. The angsty pop track is just perfect for Jim's inner dialogue and his character arc. It feels so personal and relatable.

Waiting on a Miracle is my favorite Encanto song bc it is so emotionally effective for me. I've spent a lot of my life dealing with depression and anxiety, especially of the social variety, so I feel so hard for Mirabel's struggle to find her spot in her community and family and wearing herself so thin trying so hard despite everyone around her seeming to be fine without her. It just hits where I feel it most. Plus, Stephanie Beatriz apparently recorded it while she was literally IN LABOR and like I have the most respect for that, it is not easy to sing when you're in pain, never mind THAT MUCH pain
@Miss-Nadia2 жыл бұрын
her labor had just started as she was singing and she wasn't in pain, that would've been obvious and they would've sent her to the hospital.

Sooooo fun fact about Waiting On A Miracle: it’s a way more apt title than you’d expect because the voice actress and singing voice for Mirabel, Stephanie Beatriz, was pregnant when she recorded the song, and during the recording of the song, she went into labor, unbeknownst to the rest of the cast and crew, and when she finished, she had her baby the following day. So yeah, she sang Waiting On A Miracle while she literally was waiting on her own miracle.

Oh I'm excited to see more of this series. Ranking videos are always fun! Especially when you got to a few songs I love and your like "Eh, not my thing" or "that's weird" and I audibly gasped and put my hand over my heart in mock offense. lol So glad you talked about the "Mother Knows Best" reprise. It is. SO GOOD. I love how the reprise is darker and moreso Mother Gothel's true villian song. I think any kid that has grown up with an overbearing, sheltering, or manipulative parent can really relate to both versions of these songs. The tiny mirco-aggressions from the first song turn into a full blown villain song when you try to step out on your own. And it's one of the most realistic portrayals Disney has done of an abusive parental figure. Anyway, It's an amazing reprise.

Everybody wants to be a cat from Aristocats (Likewise!) 3. Phony King of England from Robin Hood (My favourite scene from my favourite "old time" Disney movie) 4. Little black raincloud from The many adventures of Winnie the pooh (Such a soft melody, like a lullaby💖) 5. Best of friends from The fix and the hound (Another soft melody, and a fine message) 6. Part of that world from Little Mermaid (I can totally relate!) 7. Belle from Beauty and the beast (Likewise again!) 8. Let it go from Frozen (Of course🙂) My 3 worst ones: 1. What makes the red man red from Peter Pan (I hope Disney feels really ashamed about that one!) 2. I love to laugh from Mary Poppins (Way too much happiness even for me - It scares the 💩 out of me!😨) 3. Les Poissons from Little Mermaid (Feels more Looney Tunes than Disney too me if you know what I mean. It almost makes me want to be a vegan! )

"We find you totally innocent which is the worst crime of all." Is probably one of my favorite lines out of Court of Miracles, especially the way that is delivered. Also the poetic irony of that moment "we are the judge and the jury all in one but it is the sentencing that's really the fun." Mirroring Frollo toward Esmeralda in the next scene I think is underappreciated as he feels entitled to all these roles. (Obviously not book accurate, but the verse does establish that there should be a real court system that he is subverting for personal reasons)

Thank you for dunking down Song of the Roustabouts. I think it's worse than Elephants Fly. I mean, that number is still incredibly racist, but the one thing it has over Roustabouts is that it's at least trying to put the crows in a more positive position (as completely misguided as it is for their portrayal), as opposed to being outright dehumanising. I love Alice's soundtrack so oof in the chat to me for that lol. Love The intro and Golden Afternoon. I do get how it can be exhausting with the chorus template being so prominent though (even if I love that too lol). Pink Elephants On Parade from Dumbo, Why Should I Worry Reprise from Oliver and Company, A Whole New World Reprise and A Whole New World Credits from Aladdin, Can You Feel The Love Tonight Credits from The Lion King (I know you mentioned about Elton John's versions of the songs but this one was in the credits so probably worth an inclusion) and also from The Lion King some of the songs that have Swahili singing like This Land and Under The Stars and also King Of Pride Rock which includes a kind of Circle Of Life Reprise, If I Never Knew You and Colors Of The Wind both in the credits of Pocahontas, Heaven's Light from The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, it gets lumped in with Hellfire often but so do One Song and I'm Wishing from Snow White and you talked about them separately, and finally Sugar Rush from Wreck-It Ralph. Additionally, If I Never Knew You from Pocahontas, The Morning Report from The Lion King and Human Again from Beauty and the Beast are all probably classed as deleted songs but they have been included in extended versions of the films at one point or another. Hopefully you continue this series and you can slot these ones in somewhere along the way! Again, great video!

And yet “Walk the Llama Llama” was included. Also there are a few songs exclusive to international versions of the films.

I was so ready to fight her when she said that she didn't like The Sword in The Stone but then I remembered that the main reason why I love that movie is because I had gender envy for Arthur, and I don't really remember anything else from the movie.

This is amazing and I can tell you spent a lot of time preparing for this. If you have time to do the music from the disney straight-to-home sequels, I'd definitely watch that too. Despite having a rep for being inferior to their predecessors, they do have some good music and I'd enjoy to hear your thoughts

The entire section on The Little Mermaid was so solid, I am right there with you 😍 Howard Ashman is the GOAT, there is no one better than Ashman and Menken absolutely!!!! Part of Your World and it’s reprise are like a super-S for me like they need a tier of their own for me, the impact those songs have had on my life is immeasurable, I’ve literally written a thesis on it. Also if you look at the sheet music for Poor Unfortunate Souls I believe there’s a tempo marking that says “A la Kurt Weill”, which I’m obsessed with, very much Pirate Jenny vibes from Die Dreigroschenoper. I also did get to see Harvey Fierstein as Ursula and it very much gave Divine vibes, I think Howard would’ve loved it, I was liviiiiiing!!!

There’s a deleted scene from Pocahontas with a duet from Pocahontas and John Smith called If I Never Knew You. It’s a beautiful fully animated scene, apparently they cut it because it didn’t connect with younger audiences. I think the song is gorgeous, and I’m curious where you’d rank it. (I can take it if you rank it low haha 😆)

I love this video. I especially understand your struggle with songs that do their job but don't stand out. It is kind of like Foley where its purpose is to not be noticeable. That is a special talent that so many of these composers have. I would love more of this. If you need to take a break or find this format stressful, I am fine just having this video.

Wow, you really did it! I don't know if it would make a difference for a theoretical "Ranking cut Disney songs" video, but a lot of music was written for Alice in Wonderland that was never used. The official piano/vocal/guitar sheet music book even includes cut music and lyrics for many of the songs. For instance, "How D'ye Do and Shake Hands" has *nine* verses, but they have zero relevance to the movie's plot so I understand why they were cut. What's heard in the movie is just the refrain. Also "The Second Star to the Right" was repurposed from a song written for Alice called "Beyond the Laughing Sky" (...but you probably already knew that, as a Disney music aficionada). P.S. Love your unabashedly blunt attitude in this video, and your recognition of the hot dads. I think you missed "Pink Elephants on Parade"? P.P.S. You also missed "Mine, Mine, Mine," and the credits version of "Colors of the Wind" since you mentioned ranking those separately. I'm anticipating the ranking of "If I Never Knew You" in follow-up video...but now I will cease mentioning any further omissions to avoid being a nuisance. 😅

Wow! This had to be an astounding amount of prep! I must admit that I booed out loud when you put "Thomas O'Malley" in D, but that's okay. We all have our own favorites. My S-Tier Disney movie songs include: "The Bare Necessities" "When You Wish Upon a Star" "Once Upon a Dream" "Bella Notte" "Part of Your World" "The Bells of Notre Dame" "Gaston" "I Won't Say I'm in Love" "A Whole New World" "Three Caballeros" "Proud Corazon" (yes, fine I guess this is Pixar) "I See the Light" I hope you'll rank the parks songs too!

The aristocats was my favourite movie as a kid 😅 (so im probably biased) i think thomas O'Malley deserves to be in atleast B tier even if its not that complex. Its just a fun one and the excessively long name and the strummy rhythm is just awesome

I booed every single time she called an Aristocats song "trash", I mean yes it was my favourite Disney movie as a kid and I don't really enjoy "Everybody wants to be a cat" anymore, but "Scales and Arpeggios" is adorable and noone can change my mind about that.

Just discovered your channel and what a doozy this video was! Really appreciate the dedication :) Re: Frozen 2, I know that "Into the Unknown" was the big marketing "Let it Go"-style song and all that, but I always thought that "Show Yourself" was A) musically more interesting and emotionally resonant, and B) works WAY better as the "Let it Go" song for that movie. Anyway, time to go watch the rest of your videos lol

Actually according to 2 Disney movies there were some songs that weren't in the movie but they ended up on the soundtrack. And the 2 deleted songs are Never Smile at a Crocodile from Peter Pan (but you can hear the instrumental of it in the movie) and A Step in the right Direction from Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

While I very much disagree with some choices (Most of the Hunchback soundtrack is S tier IMO), and also agree with many of them (Once Upon A Time In New York City absolutely deserves being in S tier), it was great seeing a ranking of all these songs! Looking forward to more in this series.

27:23 I’m so happy that The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh is one of your favorite Disney films. It’s one of mine as well ! Honestly, it would mean the world to me if you ever made a video on that film. As a gay non-binary and neurodivergent guy, the film and the characters were my haven as a child (and still are, to be honest). With such a diverse and rich cast of characters, it’s a film and franchise which embrace difference and emphasize love, friendship and community in such a tender and sweet way. I think it’s not a coencidence that the film might resonate with queer and neurodivergent people so much.
