Howdy everyone, today we have a big ranking video I have wanted to do for a long time and that is on the Guitar Hero series! My favorite rhythm game series and a childhood favorite. Let me know your favorite down below!

Smash hits was actually a really good idea. It brought songs that had only been released with the poorer calibration of the first few games, and/or only been released as a cover, and let players play them with proper controls, the proper version of the song, as well as compatibility with the other instruments. On the surface, it's a dumb idea that only serves as a cheap cash grab, but think of it as a sort of "Remastered Edition", and it's actually pretty nice to have.

Yep, I had them all and SH was my most played one - and I played the absolute shit out of it (5* the entire game on expert). Since he wasn't an obsessive masochistic lunatic, I can get why he ranked it so low. The main appeal is that it has the funnest hard songs all in one.

Yeah at the time it seemed like a needless idea, but in retrospect I'm glad these songs were re-done in the more modern engine and we got the real master version of songs like Stellar

GH3 is my #1 as well. Not only was the main setlist amazing, but a ton of the bonus songs were too. It was the first place that I ever heard Iron Maiden and Slayer, making me a fan for life, and it introduced me to plenty of other extreme metal that I would never have been brave enough to listen to on my own. The DLC was awesome too, you got even more metal bands and the actual boss songs! Just being able to play Devil Went Down to Georgia all the way through was amazing. Huge props to Neversoft because they went absolutely crazy with GH3. Could have ended it there and I'd be satisfied, but I'm glad they did Metallica too

Important detail about GH Aerosmith: it dies NOT play exactly like GH3; Nversoft fixed a critical programming oversight in the game engine. GH3 had no "front end timing window" for HOPOs, (hammer-ons and pull-offs) the technique where you can hit quick sequences of notes without strumming. What that means is, when doing a HOPO, your timing, essentially, did not matter. You didn't have to hit the note in time with the music, you just needed to be holding the button down when the note crossed the blast zone. So you could hit certain long sequences bybasically just spamming haphazardly. This was removed for GH:A.

Finally someone else notices, thank you. Personally, that’s what i love the most about GH3 and why I still play it all the time. I have played almost all other GH’s, but that feeling of gliding through HOPO’s in GH3 is unmatched by any other game. GH3 exactly as it is and was is why after my 360 gave out a couple years ago, I went out and bought another. Just for GH3.

As a Clone hero player and guitar hero enthusiast who grew up playing the literal shit out of all the GH games,I really enjoyed watching this video. I did have a few placement disagreements especially towards the beginning of the list , but overall this video is perfect and shines a beautiful light on the series.

The defining universal moment in the 2000s was getting into yelling arguments with your friends over World Tour creative decisions while someone joked about how you sounded like a real rock band. Or absolutely *loathing* Raining Blood because you couldn’t pass it. Or knowing that FCing TTFAF on medium was both the most pathetic brag ever and somehow still insanely impressive. Guitar Hero basically introduced me to music outside of what was playing on the radio. I remember running up to my mom with a list of songs I wanted to get from iTunes and her being scandalized to see Black Sabbath on the list.

As a kid in the 2000s with a special interest in hair metal, Rocks the 80s will always have a special place in my heart. I was sick one day in like 3rd grade and my mom let me stay home and she surprised me with a copy of the game that morning. I didn’t even know it had came out. I liked it way more than 3.

Guitar Hero 3 was when the popularity of rhythm games was at its peak. GH3 and the original Rock Band came out within weeks of each other. During that time, those games were absolutely everywhere.

Fun fact: Because, it's Midnite is also NOT from the 80s. It's recorded in the 2000s and is deliberately made to sound like it came from the hair metal era. It's also from the web cartoon series called "Homestar Runner", which is also where "Trogdor" from Guitar Hero 2 came from.

I was in band class during my freshman year in highschool and one day in class someone who was a year older than me brought his PS2 and our band teacher let him hook it up to an oldschool CRT TV on one of those wheel carts. They had two guitars hooked up to the console and that was the very first time I ever played Guitar Hero. Within a month or so later my parents bought me Guitar Hero 1 and 2 for our PS2 (this was in like 2006 or early 2007 maybe) and I played those games for months on end throughout the rest of that school year. I loved playing those games.

Personally I loved Smash Hits when it came out. Them redoing a lot of their most popular songs and putting it all in 1 collection was perfect at the time. You even said how difficult it was to play Guitar Hero 1. That game in particular was difficult to play at the time since it was only on PS2. It was nice to have a "Modern" collection at the time.

(Cement) the video was cool but the fondness with which you describe GH3 warmed me. My family had the exact same, I think you're a similar age to me and I also spent soooo many hours with my dad on GH2 and 3. We loved Elephant Bones and Less Talk More Rokk. He passed a few months ago after a short battle with cancer and the way you spoke about gh3 brought me back 💞 thank you

I think you can mix the top 3 depending on when you started. GH4, 3, and 2 were just bangers. I started with GH2 but really dove in for GH3. Perfected my first Expert song in GH3. But for the family playing GH4 with my sister was awesome. I miss having people over for my 10-15th birthday and just playing GH in the living room.

Guitar Hero Aerosmith is what got me into Aerosmith as well, and it'll always have a special place in my heart, but I have to admit that it's pretty much in the middle of the road in terms of Guitar Hero games. It's not the best, it's not the worst, it's just good.

Guitar Hero 3 got me into the series. Introduced me to a lot of the songs I like these days. Sadly, it was the only one I ever played. My family wasn't poor, but we didn't have enough money to buy EVERYTHING that came with every single game. Like the console, controllers, batteries, etc.

GH3 was peak GH and reached the most people, it spoke to everyone. After that though, it was regular GH players who continued playing. That being said, I love GH3 but as an avid fan, I absolutely LOVED Warriors of Rock! The game felt so good, had a great soundtrack and had a super awesome boss bottle at the end? Super memorable!

How is it a soulless cash grab? Every song was given a full band format? Each track had new drum and vocals added to it, and they were the master recordings not covers. It allowed the games from 1 and 2 to be played the way they were meant to be. I get you said you don’t play them a lot so this was something probably overlooked, but still worth mentioning.

I learned how to play drums with GH World Tour. Ok, it was basic playing but I had no experience with drumming until World Tour. It taught me to keep time and coordination so when I eventually bought a proper electronic drum kit years later I was able to play from the get go and develop my skills. Awesome game. As a big Metallica fan since my early teens back in the early 90's, GH Metallica was so much fun. GH3 is my favourite and most nostalgic though as it was my first.

great video, i even agree with the entire order of the tier list (of the games i've played). there is one you said i wanted to comment on. when GH/RB started adding different instruments, i almost exclusively did vocals, and when you say "the vocals in these games was always kinda wack" i couldn't agree more. the reason they were the way they were, is because they only checked for clean pitch to determine if you nailed the measure or not. there was no voice recognition for the words, but more importantly, if you added any overtones to your voice (like scream singing, or even just added a bit of dirt) because when adding rasp to your voice it's no longer a singular pitch but rather a bunch of different pitches within a certain range depending on which registry you're in, the game had no idea what the fuck was happening, and despite the fact that in actuality, you were NAILING the part the game would give you a "messy" score assignment or whatever the lowest tier was. So you would get a better score if you just held out a long "ahhhhhhhhhhhhh" and just pitch matched than if you gave an actual good performance. but as someone who enjoys a lot of aggressive music this was INFURIATING especially when doing songs by bands like bring me the horizon that do a lot of pitched screaming (like half scream half sing). Honestly I hope they work on the tech that goes into these games and if they get it to that point i would definitely be open to trying another one.

My personal favourites are III, Metallica and Warriors or Rock. 3 bc it’s 3 and it was my first, Metallica bc it’s just fun and it made me get into the band plus playing guitar. I had those two on Wii, but then I got back into them in 2016 and got every game I could on PS3 and loved playing 3 and Metallica again. The other games were eh, but then I put in Warriors of Rock. I love it. It was the first time since 3 where I didn’t know a lot of the songs but learnt them bc of the game. WoR is the true successor to 3 and I’m glad it was the final game until Live

I've played and owned every game, FSFC'd almost every game on the DS and had 60/70 for gh3 before just giving up even tho I def could have gotten 67/70. Some of your decisions I didn't like at all but I agree with most like I loved van Halen but didnt like they didn't add any of Hagar or even any of vh3 with Cheron as much as people hated vh3 lol I wouldn't have minded. But good video for the most part. 😅

To be fair there is new content coming out, but it's all fan made for Clone Hero, and much of it involves using open notes like bass has in some games or even a six fret modified guitar. It's kept going and evolving as a game beyond any company's ownership, that's it's real legacy. I love the main games too, but if people think it's a dead hobby, they're wrong. And you can get the charts and songs from the games from major rhythm every series. And as for Smash Hits, the reason it existed was because most of those songs were only ever on the PS2 and not the Xbox or Wii, I think it was a request by Nintendo honestly. But they did alter the gameplay, many of the more complex songs got a full rechart to be more accurate, not always for the better in terms of fun though. But as a starter or sampler game it's fine. But fifty is a bit pricey for that. Since you didn't mention it much here's the gameplay upgrades for each main release. Gh 3 refined the ho/po timing and it would remain mostly standard for future games. World Tour introduced tap sections and the wt guitar had a touch bar (fret tap works too). Gh 5 introduced multi fret ho/po's, so you now had to carry multiple frets over as well as single. All these would appear in gh6/warriors of rock, and most upgrades went with the game engines to their spinoffs.

Guitar Hero Smash Hits is a like a nostalgia ride of some of the best songs of the early GH games, and is one of my personal favorites. I really have no complaints about it at all. Giving it a low ranking in this chart and labeling it a "cash grab" and saying it lacks new songs is missing the point of what I feel the game is about. Like I said: nostalgia.

this was an enjoyable watch for sure. glad GH3 is largely seen as the best 1. I only played that and World Tour mostly, those being the 2 I owned. Metallica would have been a sick grab too. Warriors of rock career mode was PEAK! The gameplay is the most of all the games and each song on quick play has their own objectives to help you unlock cheats and items to use in game.

I won a guitar bid on Goodwill and it came with GH3 and Rock the 80s. I was stressing thinking I paid too much, then the rock the 80s game was too scratched up and freezes, but overall I'm loving the sh*t out of GH3 and honestly it makes me so happy. I owned Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band back on the Xbox 360 and absolutely LOVED those games! I am so gutted that i sold the console, guitars and drums to a friend (who`s kids then destroyed them all!) I had my Xbox connected to a great Panasonic surround sound system with a large subwoofer and used to crank that up SO £$%&in loud haha! Drove my neighbours insane haha! I miss the whole set up SO MUCH now, especially as my kids are now old enough to have enjoyed the set up themselves too.

Actually, there's a flaw you left out in World Tour. And that is when playing in a band, everyone shares the same crowd meter. Meaning if one player fucks up, the whole band fails.

The good thing about playing the guitar hero games on PS2 and Xbox 360 is that u could play them using your controller without needing the physical guitar to play them as a old former friend of mine had shown me back in the day as kids and that's the way how I would play the games

Van Halen is my favourite band. In your words I “love love LOVE” them. I’m not disappointed in the setlist. Keeping the Sammy stuff out left room for songs like Romeo Delight and Hang ‘em High. I respect your ranking though, just wanted to add my opinion on that small part of the list. It wouldn’t top my GH ranking list either

I will say that I played the shit out of GH3 when I started playing it. Such a legendary game. I always played it on PC alongside World Tour, but a friend of mine had the entire collection on Xbox 360, so I got to play all the other games as well. Metallica was always a banger in my opinion, and it is my #3 choice behind World Tour (#2) and GH3 (#1). I will add that there is an additional option for PC players in Clone Hero. It visually looks like Guitar Hero 5, but it plays more like GH3. And you can add every thinkable song to the playlist, be it the classic Guitar Hero tracks, Rock Band songs, and every custom song there is.

I played the series growing up although say I was late to the _party_ because I didn't know this existed till my uncle introduced me to GH3 which was amazing to play i was excited and love the soundtrack just perfection ❤❤❤❤❤ i even played a few songs with him and he, or both my uncle and my mom, got me my first own guitar Hero game _Guitar Hero Aerosmith_ and i had a blast. i couldn't convince my mom to join in but music she did the only song she liked out of the list is _Dream On_ and _Walk This Way Ft. DMC_ so yeah And bonus for keeping the games for so long, even though it's rare to find anybody, I was able to play online with people that still have the games so it's more fun again just like before 😊❤❤❤

I remember my whole family were crazy with GH2, 60 percent of my extended family of 150 were so hooked to the game, we used to have system where someone had to bring a PS2 a TV and 2 Guitar controllers to every family reunion or every party we host and the game would literally be the whole party music played by family members for family members, yes I do say GH3 is better but man I miss those days

No way smash hits is lower than Live 💀 Smash hits was good for it’s time, since it was a “greatest hits” of past GH games but with all instruments being playable. Also original master recordings of songs instead of covers. It’s a great idea, wasn’t executed perfectly but it’s not the worst game in the series whatsoever.

Honestly I think the stage is set for Guitar Hero’s return. It’s been a decade since the last entry and the market is pretty open. Outside of Fortnite Festival, there is no main developer working on a rhythm based guitar/band game. The interest is still there, and they could win over casual audiences if they make a solid new entry. If they do live service, they should make sure that you can still access the songs whenever they go down, still a huge L that you are unable to do that.

GH3 is obviously top, but I'd say that GH6 deserves second place. One thing the games shied away from after 3 was having an iconic difficult song to serve as a goal, I remember playing TTFAF over and over trying to get through the intro and eventually beating the song trying to make my score better and better because the song was so hard but so fun to play. I even did the silly rubber band trick to hold down green to get through the intro haha. The later games might have included some tough tracks, but nothing as iconic as TTFAF. That is, until GH6 came along with not one but three songs by Megadeth that came back to back as the final gauntlet of the campaign! Just that one decision made the game so much more hype for me as I remember playing those songs over and over, not to mention Black Widow of La Porte which is a total shredfest and a great song in it's own right.

Guitar hero 3 with the black strat controller for ps2 on Christmas Day 2007 (I had to be in 4th,5th grade) and now I have a black strat real guitar and play to this day! Best game is rock the 80s! Because I love the set list but really it’s because I never got to play that one in my youth only every single other one!

I personally rank Guitar Hero: Smash Hits high (one of my Top 5 favorites, maybe 5th) because it has the definite way of playing classic Guitar Hero songs. My favorite GH game is Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. My other 3 of Top 5 favorites include Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero World Tour, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. So GH:WoR, GH:M, GHWT, GH3, and GH:SH in that order for me. 9:00 There is the GHTV Reloaded mod which brings back GHTV and adds many new songs. Right now, it's only available for the PS3 and Wii U versions of GHL but the iOS version will be supported when V2 comes out. Don't know if other ports will receive this mod. I'm actually enjoying this mod a lot. Without the GHTV Reloaded mod, Guitar Hero Live would probably have been my least or one of my least favorite due to its poor on-disc setlist.

cement! WT takes the crown for me over 3 because i played it first and 3 feels like a backwards step by comparison. gotta credit WOR for getting me into Rush's 2112 though and GH metallica for making me not fully appreciate Rush while they were still touring

I did not have fun with World Tour. The setlist is great but it's not worth playing. When I played it, I had so much input lag that it was almost unplayable. I tried everything to fix the input lag but I couldn't fix it. I just had a bad experience. That's just how it worked for me though.

10:59 Shrek 2 may not be from the 80’s but “What I Like About You” certainly is. The song did not originate from Shrek 2. It is from a group called The Romantics off the album, “The Romantics.” Unless you intended to say it was from Shrek 2.

I was more of a Rock Band fan, over Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero had Van Halen, Aerosmith, and Metallica, so I was a little jelly. But RB4 out beats GH Live cause, hey they still drop DLC songs. You can bring your RB 1, 2, and 3 songs to 4, either by buying it or the codes you put in when it came with those 3 games.

Yeah but I believe they took that feature away due to copyright. Being able to transfer from the older games.

Never played the Ps2 games, nor the NDS games and Warriors of Rock, but yeah, you're pretty much spot on about how I would order the games overall... well, maybe Metallica over Warriors of Rock due what I said earlier... tied with 5 and World Tour, but yeah, GH3 still the best overall.

I got world tour for Christmas the year it came out. My brother's friend got me the PS2 version and he bought his wife the Wii version at black Friday that year. It's what made me want a real guitar next Christmas. Along with GTA vice city and other game soundtracks... I asked for a real guitar next Christmas and The disappointment of opening a paper jams guitar..... . But I got one at a swap meet around my birthday the following July for $50. It was a dean sunburst Cadillac with a bass amp I traded my buddy for a fender mustang combo amp. I recently re bought t guitar hero W.T and Metallica for my PS2 and holy shit dude it's so hard to play especially with songs I actually know on guitar. I keep moving my fret hand like I was actually playing. But I've been getting my little nephew into playing and he plays the game and I'll play the guitar with him. And now he's asking for a guitar for Christmas.
