Sorry but I don't get this idea that MGS3 is linear compared to previous Metal Gear games. Not only you try to praise older entries for "allowing you to return to older areas with different enemy layouts" (19:17) while you were calling that "back tracking" in the case of MGS 1 but also you neglect the importance of those sub areas where you can deviate (19:37). In my opinion there are examples that shows that MGS3 is not linear: you can kill The End before the proper fight if you randomly choose the left path (to get the Dragunov rifle) instead of the right one, speaking of the End combat the area where you fight him is very vast and he can send you back to the prison/hospital (area that initially can be infiltrated in different manners by the way), the cave between the Ocelot fight and the Pain fight is quite vast ... And there are actually other examples.
@A-B101Ай бұрын
Still the progression is very linear, contrary to the previous games where you could and had to go back and forth to explore some more in order to progress, so you had to familiarize with the layouts. Their game designs are different in that aspect, especially compared to MGS2's maps that were very "circular"
@DarrenLucas-up6kiАй бұрын
That’s like saying 1 and 2 instead of less linear.

Yeah, I personally consider MGS2 superior to MGS3 as well, but wouldn't list the linearity of the game as one of MGS3's weaknesses compared to earlier ones myself. For me MGS3 felt like a slight let down for other reasons, mainly story, but in gameplay as well in some sense. All things considered it still is an experience higher than pretty much anything by other developers that was out there in the action adventure genre at that time, but compared to the earlier games in the series and other games Kojima has gone to make later it felt it had the least amount of meaningful surprises, although you play as a different main character it still felt like mostly fan service, an action adventure of playing as a super soldier with unfortunately less of an emphasis on any message or artistic vision on as high a level as other games in the series. What was there in the meaning department mostly felt like something that Kojima had done before better and was just repeating himself on. The boss fights and the lore about them is the main thing that elevated the game, but other than that in the gameplay department it is the game in the series where the uncomfortable control scheme and technical restrictions for making an open environment back then really started to hurt the experience for me, because it was meant to be an open environment instead of an industrial complex it felt much more obvious and clunky how the areas were separated and how the tank controls made you crawl the wrong way or buttons had a different effect to what you intended. Although newer it ended up feeling clunkier and more confusing to control compared to MGS and MGS2. All the best to anyone who considers it the best in the series, but I find it hard to agree with.

Nice video and very valid rankings. One reason to dislike Peace Walker that wasn't mentioned here is that the final boss(es) are practically impossible without utilizing multiplayer or perhaps grinding previous missions hundreds of times over. The game came to a screeching halt for me when I got to the second Peace Walker battle. I didn't have the weapons, or the ammo, or the comrades to beat it at all. I barely even scratched the thing. Maybe I was missing something throughout my entire playthrough that would've made it easier, but I'm pretty sure I was playing it thoroughly, collecting soldiers and building equipment.. so I have no idea what I did wrong or if the game was just poorly designed

Ground Zeroes for me is an A or maybe even close to S tier game. It's great for what it was supposed to be, an appetizer. Back in 2014 it looked and felt mindblowing, like a true next gen. It had a ton of replay value and I would never call it just a demo. No, it's a prologue, and it succeeded at that. On the other hand, I think Phantom Pain is more disappointing for what it was supposed to be: the complete experience.

Eight hours to complete the MGR wow. That's about twice as long as my first playthrough. What I don't like is not that the game is short, but how few levels the game has, only the first four are finished, the fifth is a backtracking, the sixth is a hangar that takes 5 minutes to run through. Pre-rendered cutscenes are one of my biggest problems with Platinum games. Not because they are 30 FPS or 720P, but because they sometimes take up several times more space than the actual game weighs. For example, the game Vanquish weighs 18 GB, and the game takes up only 2.5 GB, which is ridiculous. With MGR, the situation is even worse 25 GB, and the game is only 2.5 GB. I'm scared to imagine how much more the game will weigh if you make all the pre-rendered cutscenes in 4K60FPS, the only way to fix it is to make them in real time.

Almost agree with everything here except MGS3 being in A tier. I believe that MGS1, MGS2, and MGS3 are miles better than every other game in the series, it feels like a perfect complete story. If any other games that come close, probably MGS5 and MGR. But MGS5 is unfinished, the story isnt that engaging (because its unfinished) and lots of repetitive missions. MGR is a great game but it does weird me out when people say its the best metal gear, like i dont even think its one of the best hack n slashes, theres way better ones out there. Mgs4 is accurate, theres a lot of things the game does right but its way too anime and cringey even for metal gear standards. Solid snake and big boss got great endings but trying to wrap up the story the way they did was bad, MGS2 didnt need a story sequel, it was perfect as it is. I also didnt like peace walker, like it just takes away all the freedom from MGS3 and makes it a grindy game, not for me. Accurate tier list really good

The game is great while you're going through the main story, but as soon as you get the two endings and did most of the fun unique missions, you REALLY see how simple the gameplay is, and the loadtimes between the missions, Mother Base, and the prep menu are cumbersome. Even the tapes aren't placed well enough in the menus. MGSV improved those aspects by making the Idroid do everything, everywhere, and by broadening the gameplay. Still PW is a fantastic game.

MGS1 is S tier and my favourite, but like you, I absolutely loved MGS2, maybe I like it more than MGS1 too. I loved so many elements in it. Bomb disposal was unique and thrilljng, the guards were much smarter than in MGS1, the Clearing Mode was frightening, disguising as the enemy was fun. MGS2's flaw to me was the cut scenes and codec calls that came quite often and paused you mid game sometimes. MGS1 2 and 3 are S Tier to me. 4... I agree with your thoughts as well. I loved the gameplay but after Act 2, it fell apart. I felt like the Shadow Moses segment sucked, it felt too comical with the stupid robots. I give it a C ranking. MGO2 however, S tier to me. Lol. I will rate MGS1, 2, 3 and MGO 2 an S.

Here me out, no criticisms of your rankings, but if there is one thing I wish Konami didn’t do, it was lowering the price of Ground Zeroes from $40 to $30 before release. I believe lowering the price of the game resulted in an unfinished product for The Phantom Pain. Here’s why. I believe it is safe to say Ground Zeroes sold about 3 million units in between development time for TPP. 3 million multiplied by $30 is $90 million. Now, if the game was sold at $40 and roughly 2 million units were sold (and I think it’s safe to assume people would have bought it because most consumers were MGS fans), that would have come down to $120 million. That extra $40 million, while still a pretty small sum, that is still a lot of money Konami lost out on. TTP apparently costed $80 million to make. Imagine what that extra 20-40 million could have done for The Phantom Pain. Just my take. MGSV could have been an S Tier game and the best game in the franchise, but I really think cutting the cost by $10 resulted in the product we got with TPP which I think really sucks.
@cooperchance7720Ай бұрын
TPP is finished lmao. Kingdom of the Flies and the last 3 chapters were scrapped ideas long before launch. The full script leaked. The game is done.
@Pippus4Ай бұрын
That's not how developing works for any software for that matters, expecially the budgets for projects are allocated long before any announcement. If anyting Ground Zeroes is more a way to monetize a tech demo on steroids, but thinking its performance was the big thing with the drama TPP had behind the scene is a bit naive.
@bloring1222Ай бұрын
@@Pippus4 In most circumstances, I would agree with you. But I also believe Ground Zeroes was a tech demo to kickstart development for TPP. Konami likes money more than anything. Ground Zeroes would not exist if they didn’t like money. It did not need to exist as a standalone game but we ended up getting it. But Konami is a greedy company that fails to realize that game development takes time and money, and in hindsight they failed to realize that TPP could have sold twice as many copies if it was a mostly complete game and I really think the sales numbers reflects on the decision making to release TPP 9/1/15. I truly believe if Ground Zeroes did not exist, TPP would not exist either and if GZ sold horribly, we would have gotten a half cooked TPP. If ground zeroes sold the numbers that I said previously, TTP would have had an extra 6 months of development time at the very least and 6 months can go a long way. Kojima left Konami for a reason, not just because of happiness, but Konami wasn’t allowing him to creat his Swan Song with TPP. I think Kojima wanted GZ to be sold at $40 to fund TPP. We won’t know until Kojima tells the truth, but I’m willing to bet that what I’ve said previously is on the right track
@bloring1222Ай бұрын
The sales number of GZ reflects on releasing TPP on 9/1/15***.

@A-B101Ай бұрын
There's ALWAYS something going on in MGS2's story, twists happen all the time, the power dynamic between the heroes and villains shifts all the time too, the stakes are high, the places you're standing on could crumble at any moment (and they all end up doing so), tens of hostages could get hurt, we are right next to New York, and Raiden is a rookie who has to adapt. On top of that it also holds the deepest meaning and themes (with MGSV). Contrast that with MGS3's story where you learn and see very little between when you meet EVA, and when Snake gets catpured, much later. Most of it is action and even comedy with little stakes (Ocelot, Sokolov, the Cobras, Granin, etc). It's a simpler story and you could skip a lot of the custcenes.

Ocelot has been weird the entire series unless you've only played the Phantom Pain which is probably what you do. Why is Volgin being pure evil a bad thing, not every villain needs to have some tragic backstory or start as a hero and become evil due to circumstance, some people are just bad people. Snake and EVA's romance being forced is because EVA forces the relationship to seduce him since she is a spy and wants to steal the philosphers legacy from him which you would know if you actually paid attention to the game instead of being a retard.
