I have to agree, every game from 9 to 1 is immensely better than Battletoads. That game was a miserable experience to play.

What an attempt. I’m curious to see where this series goes. I’d put Castlevania, MM2, or Contra ahead of Ninja Gaiden. However, all are amazing games and would be in my top 20 all-time on NES.

Great analysis. Every point you made was spot on. I think this is a fantastic idea that you set out to pass every game before you rank it- that's what it really takes to truly be able to fairly rank NES games and understand them individually. Not an easy overall task whatsoever.

I lived in Cleveland for a year and learned how to speed run Ninja Gaiden. One of my favorite games of all time.

Man that’s a great speedrun game too. Poetry in motion when that thing is run the right way. It really is incredible how it’s so cinematic for an NES game.

No they’re coming! I’m only rating the games that I’ve actually completed. I’ve got walkthroughs of the 10 games in this episode and I’ll eventually be forming a full ranking of all NES games. I’m really looking forward to both of the titles you mentioned. I’ve heard nothing but good things.

Funny thing about Contra, I've only ever beaten it once. And while I DID use the code to get 30 lives during that attempt, I then blazed through the game without dying once. It was the first time I'd ever gotten to the first stage's boss, let alone beat it. And I thought the game would get even harder after that... Only for the first stage to be the hardest one, IMO.

@@faerieknight2298 I always felt Energy Zone was most difficult. Sometimes the stray bullet takes me out in snow field. But this was the game my older brother and cousin spent HOURS on as kids. I’d sit and stare in amazement.

@@retronate Fair enough. I'd thought that after the pure bullet hell of the first stage, the rest of the game was easy by comparison. But Contra does earn it's reputation for being legendarily hard.

I have to be honest. Placing Bayou Billy over Battletoads is wild to me. I agree that Bayou Billy has a better story, but each level doesn’t feel as satisfying to me because the controls aren’t as good as Battletoads. Sure, Battletoads is frustratingly difficult, but it still feels fair. Every time you die, you know what you did wrong. In Bayou Billy there are times were you’ll be killed because you just couldn’t do what you wanted to do, and to me, that alone makes it a much worse game. I can’t imagine that games like Contra or Ninja Gaiden would be as beloved as they are if they controls didn’t feel so good. And Battletoads is really satisfying to play, because its controls feel great. Otherwise, great list. This is awesome!

@@ZKichiro it’s a fair argument. I guess to me I weighted the story and overall satisfaction of completing it a little heavier than just the controls. Tbf Battletoads has its share of jank…particularly headbutt timing. But I think your point is well made. Just a preferential thing for me.

Agreed. Bayou Billy failed to hold my attention. I finished Battletoads as a young teen and felt a sense of accomplishment at doing so.

I remember getting Bionic Commando when it was new and thinking they had made a mistake and made my copy incredibly difficult. 10 year old me couldn't get past the 2nd level... FOR YEARS ! then my parents gave my Nintendo and all of my games away to my "nephews" who were only a few years younger than I. After this i received a SNES for Christmas that year. Still wish i had those consoles and games.

@@toddburgess5056 whew the SNES is my coming of age system. I cut my teeth on the NES but SNES was my jam. Bionic Commando seemed to get easier the further you got since you obtain more HP and useful items. But getting going was tough!

I haven’t, but I intend to play all the games eventually and then slot them into the list wherever I feel it’s appropriate. Rambo is one that I’ve heard mixed reviews on.

Zelda and Metroid probably should have taken some of the lower spots (at least) in this video. Also, even though I am a HUGE fan of Ninja Gaiden, Super Mario 3 should have been number one...easily. Decent list though.

I haven’t finished those yet so they haven’t been ranked yet. Once I complete a walkthrough video of those titles, I’ll incorporate those into my overall ranks. So they’ve still got a shot! More episodes of this will come out as I complete more games.

Easily the most creative pause music of the bunch - a collection of mixed sound effects from the game. The high point of the soundtrack. Turbo tunnel isn’t bad. The rest are a snooze.

@@RickyGohan they did improve those aspects. I still prefer the soundtrack and character of the original. The top down levels aren’t as interesting as the bases were to me. Not bad, I just prefer Contract
