I know this is very late (4 months lol), but I'm gonna post my ranking here anyway: - Portal Stories Mel: S (I agree with you here, except that you forgot about the difficulty options: easy mode (which they call story mode for some reason) and normal/original mode (which is inexplicably called advanced mode, even though it used to be the only mode and should therefore be called normal/original mode. Weird naming...)) - Portal Revolution: A (I also agree with you here) - Portal Reloaded: A (If you understand the time-portal, it's actually a really fun game, but it does have some bad chambers and almost no story. Coop is great though) - Thinking with Time Machine: B (I like the gimmick, but the level design isn't as good as in the higher ranked mods. The map editor and workshop add a lot of value) - Rexaura: C (It tries to focus on the high energy pellets and manages to make some pretty good chambers with them, especially for being an old portal 1 mod. But those aspects also really limit the mods potential and some of the later chambers aren't that fun) - Aperture Tag: C (The paint gun is very fun, but it gets old quickly, the levels aren't all that interesting or unique after a while. Also, for it being the only paid mod on the list, it should also offer the most value, but there are still way better options on steam) - Portal prelude (+ rtx): D (I have played both the original and the rtx-version. In the original, I disliked a lot of the chambers and the dialogue was very hard to understand because of the text-to-speach. Most chambers just relied on extremely tight jumps (that literally force you to keep adjusting the portal-funnel-setting and made me think the mod broke in an update to portal 1). The rtx-version looks better and has actually understandable voice-acting, but the gameplay has not been improved much. Such a missed opportunity) - Portal forbidden testing tracks: D (It has a lot of interesting ideas, but it just doesn't uses them well. Most chambers aren't even puzzles (as much as Portal 1 Chamber 1 is anyway), the story is executed poorly and there are several mapping issues (nice nodraw you got there...)) - Portal with rtx: F (The original game is great, but this mod just adds lag and some slightly fancier graphics. Just play the original instead, it's way more fun)

Oh, also, after you released your video, "The cleaning game" came out, which would technically count, even though it has nothing to do with portal. C Tier for that one from me.

Portal reloaded: you put something somewhere, it's the same object in the future that you can move on its own. You take a cube from the present and put it on a button, the same cube sits there until the future, where you can move that cube around separately from the one in the present that's on the button. You move your blue portal in front of a laser in the present, the blue portal sits there in the future until you move it in the future. Objects moved in the past reset their future counterparts so that they're sitting where they are in the present, where you can move them again in the future wherever you want. Future objects taken to the past just kinda don't exist in the future after you take them out.

i don't think rating mods negatively because they are too hard for you is fair. i think it's fair to criticise when the solution to a puzzle is tedious or obtuse but you not knowing how recording a clone works or how time works doesn't make the mods inherently worse

keep in mind that its hard to know how good a game is if you cant even get through it though. plus, this is subjective anyway so if you arent having a good experience then yeah, it should have a lower rank.

Random trivia, but Aperture Tag name might be a reference to" TAG: The power of paint". A short game developed by the team of students from Digipen that was hired for Portal 2. I believe something similar happened previously with the team of students from Digipen that created Narbacular Drop, that featured the portal mechanic and then where hired by Valve before Portal. I didn't try much of Narbacular Drop, but I'd recommend giving "TAG: The power of paint" a try. TAG also has three paints, like Portal 2, but one of them is different. I won't spoil more, as it's a 10-15 minute game. Or way more if you start playing with it instead of finishing the levels. I love Portal but haven't played any mods yet (ignoring custom chambers made with the Portal 2 editor), so thanks for your recommendations. I'll try mel first when I get the time.

The main idea behind TWTM is good, I just feel like it needed a bit more time in the oven. The mechanic is a bit weird on a first time playthrough, puzzle difficulty varies a lot from room to room and it feels like the maps weren't playtested enough. Not to mention the weird excuse of a story the mod has, it's super weird, but overall it's charming in what it attempts to do.

I’m surprised valve would allow someone to charge money for a portal mod. I’m not saying moders shouldn’t be rewarded for their work but usually that is don’t through donations on patroon or something similar. Unless valve has made a statement on this already I’m just surprised that they would let the mod stay up and not delete it because its technically copyright infringement, and you can’t even argue fair use because its being sold for real money. Also if Bethesda aren’t allowed to do payed mod’s without backlash I don’t see why valve should be allowed to, even if it wasn’t there idea.

BTW you just sound like you give up too easily to enjoy the Portal series. Basically you love the first two games which a child could beat (like as in an 10 year old) and a lot of these mods are more advanced in difficulty. You admitted you never understood the concept behind Thinking With Time Machine and so you gave up instead of investing a SMALL amount of time to figure it out. That just proves my point entirely. Get smarter, don't mash the mods because you suck at puzzles.

Setting to one side how unfair a number of these rankings may or may not be, there are so many notable mods for the first game that are conspicuously absent. No trace of Portal Pro, Blue Portals, Gamma Energy, Portal Unity, Portal Collab, Factum Solus or Hetzchase Nailway. Though it isn't technically a mod you'd install to sourcemods I also would've thrown in the Portal: The Flash Version Map Pack. I'd never go into a video like this expecting a truly exhaustive list but this almost minimally short list was very disappointing. If it makes you feel any better though, I don't like Portal: Prelude or Rexaura either. The former leans too heavily on strict timing windows and advanced flings and the latter is absolutely infatuated with long-winded energy pellet redirection puzzles which I'm just not all that into.

portal reloaded for me was not favorite, but i understood the time travel perfectly. But there was times when i figured out the solution to a puzzle i was more annoyed than satisfied with the way it waas designed. Which isn't a good sign i think. Also the voice acting was pretty annoying
