Every time I see the "At Dawn" section of Speed Highway, it just makes me sad that we didn't get a remake of it in Sonic Generations

I always think about how little time most people spend in that section since it's so easy to rush to the animal capsule. You do have a good point, but I will add that there is a sunset/sunrise (most likely sunrise, as the English name of the original music track is "At Dawn") variant of Speed Highway Act 1 in the challenges, sadly it doesn't play a remix of "At Dawn... for Speed Highway".

Generations just doesn’t have the fluidity of the Adventure titles controls. At Dawn while nice would’ve been a purely aesthetic addition.

Windy Hill was completely changed in the final version of Adventure 1 due to memory limitations. All levels were intended to be designed like Beta Windy Hill, but it would have been impossible to do that within the Dreamcast's memory.

The Adventure games and P-06 are the only Sonic games that I go out of my way to speedrun. The way the levels are designed and the physics are implemented just make them the most satisfying to me. I’ll always love this style, and I still hope we’ll see it again in some form someday!

Ya know the funny thing is, Shadow the Hedgehog is the only game that fixed the light dash + lightning shield issue. In certain areas where the light speed dash is mandatory they include special types of rings that don't disappear but instead go hollow when initially collected. If you (somehow) get a lightning shield it'll just suck the gold ring out and leave a hollow one for you to light dash.

I was mega 🤨 when you started Windy Valley and even as someone who has yet to try beta Windy Valley, I get where you're coming from Edit 1: surprised to see Ice Cap so high, the snowboarding section is awesome but I feel most before that is just kinda okay Edit 2: I feel Pyramid Cave was a perfect placement as well Edit 3: Holy Crap Beta Windy Valley looks soo fun omg, I gotta play it Edit 4: like most, obviously I got a strong connection to city escape, but what really makes me love it, is how much it's also impacts my family, all the kids know it thanks to me, and it fills me with so much joy that they remember it, even the ones who don't even play games

SA1 definitely has better levels, in my opinion. I like more open platforming in my Sonic games, and SA1 has plenty of multiple pathways to speed through, so that’s very ideal for my preference in level design. SA2 does have multiple pathways, but they’re obviously and noticeably more linear which is not exactly what I want from is a Sonic game, but I still can find fun in that game, just not as much as SA1. Let me know if you disagree. I’d love to hear your opinion! I applaud people when they disagree with me. :)

@Yikes The Classics were going for a more exploratory vibe like in Sonic CD and S3&K, so it’s no surprise that they would try to replicate that into a 3D space. I just felt like SA2’s pathways were too samey with all the rail grinding in each of them. I don’t hate rail grinding, but I felt like I would’ve liked it more if it didn’t prioritize it at times. SA2 has level design that’s often determined as to whether you can stay on a rail efficiently, and while that’s not bad as I said earlier, it doesn’t capture the more open feeling I felt when playing SA1. Then again, I ask that you take this with a grain of salt, as some of this could be the bias I have for SA1.

Tbh I really enjoy the linear aspect of Windy Valley and I love how you can take a couple short cuts to the goal especially when your rushing to the goal when you being timed. And the aesthetic is also pretty cool

I like the lightning shield, but there needs to be a solution to it messing up ring trails if it's gonna be in the game. The light speed dash in Adventure 1 has a dash forward so that you can avoid the lightning shield problem, and shadow the hedgehog leaves an invisible trail of rings if you accidentally pick them up. Either of these are great fixes imo

The solution is to do a jump dash into the trail of rings before attempting to light dash. You can't bounce after doing a jump dash so light dash will be the only action the Action button can do after a jump dash

This was a awesome video sir. When you mentioned Greenhill Zone on SA2 , being not that good. I felt alittle relief. Man I earned all A's on SA2 but couldn't go any further because I didn't buy the Battle DLC from the Playstation 3 store before they pulled SA2 off out of their store. This is a really good list, i agree in almost everything, just think pyramid cave and lost world could switch places, since the walls can mostly be avoided with some reaction, and the snake section has can actually kill you some times, since it doesn't follow sonic movements, and if you fall it's 99% straight death, but overall perfect list, keep up the good work!

City Escape is my all time favorite level. The memories I have of wanting to play the song on guitar to the truck chase being memorable as well. Metal Harbor takes second not only for the skill gap (which I can care less about) but the music and the place where you find the secret chao.

A lot of these levels would rank higher if you knew every skip. like in crazy gadget you can skip the entire tetris anti-gravity segment within the game's intended rules. this is also why I don't play sa1 as much since I can just skip half the levels and there's no rank incentive. Also for the rail-switching on curved rails, it works when you wait for the character to lean really far, or just slow down in general. And lastly for metal harbor, you can just destroy the planes that fly by on the aircraft carrier at the start, and not need to use the highest point of the rocket to get the A rank.

Green hill got absolutely slandered in this video - It's an easter egg level and it's kinda doodoo yes BUT what you have to understand is it's a 1:1 recreation of green hill zone from sonic 1 in sonic adventure 2 so of course the level design is going to seem lack luster the OG green hill wasn't designed to be played in 3D. This was also the first ever time green hill zone came back before it started to rear it's ugly head in every new sonic game.

You can run the SA1 race track on foot if you use a mod that gives boost to clip the door. Its very fun and makes me want a Sonic runner racer game, but the camera gets caught under the track sometimes so offing yourself is da way 😢

If they ever do make re-makes of the adventure games making the switching rails the bumper buttons like the modern games instead of having to lean and jump would fix my one and only problem with rail grinding in adventure 2. It still is a shame tp me that rail grinding was simplified and not refined further, as it was actually a skill to master and feels wonderful when you get that speed, it could have still been made less punishing by removing falling off if you don't corner correctly and just made it so you lose alot of speed.

As someone who just recently played and beat (modded) SA1 and SA2 for the very first time, I feel like your take is very different to mine... SA2 has so many enemies that just pop up out of nowhere and I have no idea how they managed to get away with it. SA2 also feels significantly more stiff than SA1.

I rate slcertain stages in SA1 lower for certain reasons. Windy Valley and Lost World I penalize for just being really buggy. For a while, the wind tunnels in windy Valley just kill me for no reason. And Lost world's biggest problem isn't the snake. It's the dark room. Both because the lights are super finniky and because sometimes when making a jump it flings you way more forward than you intend to go. (You legit accelerate forward when you're trying to halt momentum sometimes) I respect SA1's ambition and I do think it has the better stages from a conceptual and theoretical standpoint, but SA2's statlges are better executed. For the most part (why SEGA ever thought it was a good idea to have a magnet shield in a game with so many necessary light speed segments I have no idea).

I wish we could play AI Generated Sonic Adventure 2 Stages as the severe lack of Adventure & Adventure Fanmade Levels is disappointing. We seriously need someone who is to Sonic Adventure 2 what Kaze is for Super Mario 64. As for your ranking it seems that you only consider the 1st Missions. When you play certain 5th Missions in Adventure 2 it changes your understanding of the stages. Personally I prefer White Jungle over Green Forest. Also 2P Battle Mode changes stages as well with Final Chase ending much earlier there.

You're really overexaggerating the Lightning Shield issue. Which isn't even a Crazy Gadget exclusive "problem". You can clearly see the B prompt appearing on screen as the ring is coming towards you. You can still get in the Light Dash if you time it right.

Casinopolis for me was way worse than sky deck. Sky deck has a fun and strange leveling design, also you can skip most of first part of stage and third too. Casinopolis in other way is so slow, usually i try to skip pinball as fast as possible and just get 400 rings in the actual level (it is possible)
