I finally finished Desperation, it took longer than expected. I mentioned in the video that I only had about 200 pages left and shortly after that I hit a wall. The ending devolved into some weirdness somewhat akin to IT and it wasn't quite what I was hoping for. I'll leave it at its spot in the ranking because I was very entertained by the first 2/3rds of the story and enjoyed the themes throughout.

Great ranking!! Girl you have to read Salems Lot-I think it’s one of his best atmospherically and the exploration of small towns. I think the vampire thing throws some readers off but it’s so much more than that. Also agree that Fairy Tale was so gripping and the set up portion was probably my favorite part of the book and example of when the set up is actually necessary 😅

Since 2019, I’ve been reading one Stephen king book per summer, and here is my current ranking (for the record, I’ve liked all the books so far): 6. Christine 5. The Shinning 4. The Dead Zone 3. Carrie 2. Salem’s Lot 1. IT

Yeah, I think that's about right. The Dead Zone is pretty good too. The stakes get weirdly high, but the book is sort of melodrama. Here's a scene from the movie, which is nicely delivered by Christopher Walken: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4rReHSQoZijoNU Never noticed how "goth" he looked.

I think Christine is definitely a must read. IMO it was definitely done dirty by the adaptation. Which most movies are. But one of the best things about King books is the inner dialogue which can’t be easily adapted .If you enjoyed his fantasy selection I would also look at “Eyes of the Dragon” I think you would like it. “Nightmares and Dreamscapes” has great short stories . Lastly “The Stand” is a beast but has some of the best characters ever

IIRC, Insomnia also ties into the Dark Tower series (which is where It/Pennywise technically comes from) and little bits of info that potentially ties other works of his to it as well. Mike Hanlon from "It" makes an appearance in it as well.

I finished Insomnia recently and loved it as well. A few weeks later I read Bag of bones and was thrilled to meet Ralph Roberts again - if only for a short scene. Good that I read Insomnia first because in Bag of bones they tell you (careful, spoiler warning)... that Ralph died in a car accident. And that would have spoiled Insomnia if I had not read it first. Maybe I would have not been able to connect the dots. But it is a huge spoiler in Bag of bones to drop that information on the reader.

I totally agree with you that both versions of the shining are valid. Stephen king, even though he tells such dark stories, he loves to give the reader a happy ending and a sense of warm feelings that end in a sweet resolution. Kubrick, on the other hand, has always displayed a cold, dark read on the world and his shining adaptation. I mean The book ends with the hotel burning down while the movie ends with it freezing so there’s your clue. It’s like you said, the same story just told from a different worldview. Also I agree that misery is the best use of a writer as the main character. I mean he loves to self insert lol but when you’re someone famous and beloved, I could def see someone like him be afraid of his own fan base haha I feel like any celebrity can relate but also people who idolize celebrities going too far can be relatable to lol so glad it came as the runner up! Also the hours you put into the it deep dive is still much appreciated hahaha

The last King book I read was Revival… and it immediately jumped to the tippy top of my list, and aside from The Stand, I’ve read all of his major books, and I absolutely believe this one stands up there with his strongest. It’s slower in the sense that it doesn’t get very “horror” until the very end. It’s essentially a first-person memoir of this kid who grows up in the ‘60s, falls in love with guitar, falls onto hard times, and then falls out of them (not a spoiler), but woven throughout is the more fantastical element of the book… and that I won’t spoil for anyone other than to say that the antagonist of Revival is one of the greatest King characters ever. He’s sinister but not one-dimensionally so. I don’t want to say more! Throughout much of the book, there is this undercurrent of dread and mystery that slowly grows and grows and grows. It’s like this ominously hissing fuse that puts you on edge until the big explosion happens at the end. I think it’s among King’s most genuinely frightening books because it’s all about existential horror (“what happens after we die?”) and if you really let its climax sink in, as fantastical as it is, it’s absolutely chilling. Puts a weird feeling in my gut just thinking about it as I type this! Long story short: Revival. Highly recommended. Hope more folks see this and read it 😬

Nice ranking! Love it when your inner bookworm comes out! I want to get back into reading and this motivates me to! Also nice shirt! I still need to visit the Stanley hotel! The actual room number is 217 but the movie has it as 237. I remember the first king book I read was Carrie and even though it was off putting the way he tells the story, I really liked it and was actually creeped out by it! Also you should check out his compilation of short stories books A lot of kings books already come with a movie deal attached to them like you know lol even apt pupil has a movie adaptation! I usually feel like the books are always better compared to their book counterparts but I feel like the one exception for me has to be Misery! I read the book right before I watched the movie for the first time at the Alamo drafthouse and was impressed how it adapted the story so well, I can’t pick one is better than the other! My mom is a huge Stephen king fan and remembers buying her first book, Salems lot, and she bought it when it first came out! She even met him when she was going to school in New England in the 80s! Her favorite book of his is the stand and I still haven’t read it either! I still need to lol she also owns that same cover of insomnia that you have!! Thank you for this list! I haven’t finished it (it’s really good on audiobook, especially the first part of it, due to being so slow), but Jurassic Park is such a great read. I haven’t gotten to anything too violent yet, but after learning the novel was actually written to be more of a horror novel. Very violent and I think gives off Resident Evil vibes. And on the subject of Resident Evil, the S. D. Perry novels are great (I’ve only ever finished the second game’s novelization, mostly due to the original game being my favorite), but I have many of them and plan to listen to them (someone has actually made KZbin playlists where they read them, so it actually is most likely the easiest way to read them and J.P. Also has its audiobook on KZbin as well). They are more monsters and body horror, but I highly recommend both!

For other horror books you might be interested in: The Drowning Girl (queer neurodivergent protagonist in New England questioning her memories), A Dowry of Blood (queer vampire story of violence and romance), and A Hand to Hold, A Hand to Carve (body horror story about co-dependence). I haven't given Stephen King a lot of my time yet because I mostly seek out queer horror, but I might give him another try thanks to this video (I did read The Dead Zone in high school but it wasn't my cup of tea). Also, if you are interested in a grounded take on supernatural horror, I grew up with the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series. It's... Insomnia is a little more resonant if you have already read the first few Dark Tower books. It was one of the first things he did outside of that series that is directly tied to it, and some of the more outlandish aspects are outgrowths of themes and concepts from the Dark Tower. King has also singled this book out as one of his own that he doesn't think totally works, calling it "try hard".

Apt Pupil was one of the stories in Different Seasons, which was a collection of short stories. I think they made a movie out of it, and that movie "Stand by Me" was based on a story from the collection. One overlooked short story of this work is "The Breathing Method". Sort of soap opera-ish in its tropes, but theres some creepy stuff in it via a Library in "The Club". I'd recommend it. Grapples with some heavy existential themes. Read it when I was growing up, and one line from the story made a huge impact on me. Here for the deep dive into the Shining. It's one of the popular novels that I haven't read. Enjoyed the takes.

Monday, a book review? 🤨 Ok it’s Stephen King bring it on. I’m retired now but when I was working I took an express bus to work. 45 minutes there and back so I had lots of time reading books five days a week. Now retired I worry more about staying active but movies following your channel gives me, I’ll say it such Joy. I do have Fairy Tale now. I remembered you talking about it and in the store it caught my eye so I got it. Yes, starting out it’s like WTH but I remember your review. Yes I have to look at the cover to see his name because it is different from his other styles. Also I wanted to get into Fairy Tale Lore because I’m a big fan of M. Knight and he’s one of the few Directors that get into stuff like that in some of his movies. The subject of cover art. With movies I like when they put an effort to make creative sleeves and covers. Especially the studios that give you new art and a reversible cover to the original. I agree that cover on the book Carrie was 🤢. If you didn’t see the name you would never know what book it was. 🤔 Your reviews on some of his films have helped me a lot. Thanks.

I actually haven’t even read most of these and I’m a huge King fan but ig we’re all interested in different things but the ones I have read are: Carrie, Pet Sematary, Misery, The Shining, and IT but I am very interested in Fairy Tale now cause that was actually very interesting what you said about it cause I honestly thought it was jus gonna have a boring family friendly fantasy feel to it (like Eyes of the Dragon) but I didn’t know it would have horror elements or creative writing and that might actually be my next King read and I’ve also been interested in TGWLTG for awhile but I never got around to reading that but Stephen King is a true ARTIST of horror and writing and hes made some of my fav books of all time!

I did a book review on misery. It was my first Stephen king book. So so sooo good. The fact it takes place in one room and one perspective… masterful storytelling. Im currently on Pet Semetery and I’m loving every bit of it. Next is Salems Lot! In time for Halloween.

I have been reading "The Shining" for the first time last year, and it was surprisingly different from the film that Kubrick wrote and directed. But both mediums are enjoyable despite its differences. Currently, I am now reading "Gerald's Game" after seeing the 2017 film adaptation almost two years ago. Truth to be told, I really want to read the rest of Stephen King's novels (e.g. "Doctor Sleep", "Carrie", "Misery", "It", "The Dead Zone", etc.) and novellas (e.g. "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption", "1408", "The Life of Chuck", "The Monkey", etc.) and dive deeper into the wonders of terror.💯

If you're struggling with Lord of the Rings, I recommend the audiobooks Andy Serkis narrated. He's an incredible voice actor. He really brings the books to life and he also "casts" each of the characters with the accents of his co-stars. He really is an astonishing voice actor. A man of a thousand voices.

Any other horror authors you’d recommend? Stephen King is my favorite, but I want to branch out. I’m already also fan of Lisa Jewell, Lucy Foley and David Patterson and I’ve heard a lot of Jack Ketchum’s work is fucked up (I.e. the book based on Sylvia Likens), so I’d like to expand my palate more if you have any recs.

It's Room 217 in Stephen King's The Shining and Room 237 in the film. There's a TV series of The Shining from the nineties that follows the book more closely.

Kylie, amazing video. Stephen King is a national -- international -- treasure. I really liked Misery. I read Carrie yrs. ago. Liked it. At the time. Should give it a re-read. I've read Salem's Lot. The Shining. The Dead Zone. Christine - both the movie and the book R great. The Running Man. (Which he wrote under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Also Thinner. Which is good.) Cycle of the Werewolf - a short read. Others: Bag of Bones. Gwendy's Button Box. Elevation - a nice novella. Anyway, Kylie, fantastic video.

When Stephen King was writing Carrie, he almost threw it away, but his wife, Tabitha told him there was something there and to finish it. I'm a big Stephen King fan, I read it a long time ago at this point but it's not the best of Stephen King. Especially when you look at the Stand, IT, Salem's Lot, the Shining, & Pet Sematary

The collection Different Seasons is great, I highly recommend reading it. I think we see that story differently. The kid in Apt Pupil is a psychopath. I think part of the point of the story is that the German guy is evil due to being from an evil system but this all American kid from the privileged background is next level evil that has sprung out of a 'good' system. That's what makes it disturbing. The Stand is great, it has everything I like most about King's writing. Of the last ten years or so, I like Revival the most. If you spot that one cheap it's worth grabbing.

The only Stephen King book I've ever read is "The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon," and although I genuinely enjoyed it, I don't think I can justify reading most of his other works, except maybe the novellas. From what I've heard of his full blown novels, he stretches the story out far longer than than needs to be. I don't have time for that, especially when I can just watch the movie and get a very similar experience without the fluff.

Stephen King himself brought himself to admitting that Brian De Palma’s Carrie was most likely better than the book. I’m pretty interchangeable between the two. I thought the ending was better in the film, but the book felt more relatable and local (that’s probably because I read the book first, so I’d be using people I know in person to fill in the role of the characters). I also felt like the moment when Estelle interacted with a 3 year old Carrie really showed how far Margaret had torn her apart.

Too many people who can shine ... well, all of King's stories happen in a connected world. Even his short works that take place far away from Maine often have passing references to his other works, that readers newer to King World may miss ... the connections are little payoffs to "insiders".

If you liked the outsider and the character of Holly, there’s a whole series about her and it’s soo good! Hollys growth and the way King writes her (especially compared to his earlier depictions of women, specifically women with mental illnesses or autism) is honestly amazing. I’d say the outsider is actually the worst of the series funnily enough!

I prefer The Shining movie to the book. For me the movie is better. Easily. Yes, the Carrie movie (De Palma), is much more riveting, than the book. Misery movie, does however, have the advantage of Kathy Bates, who was amazing. But I give Stephen King, credit for coming up with the ideas, but I just enjoy the stories more on film. One of King's best books that I would recommend, is ''the stand.'' Worth reading. Just takes, forever.
