Honestly I noticed mh and sh has had the most decent represention in regerds to alt dolls but even then not so much?? Like you said mh has had used stereotypes for their represention in regards to characters like isi and even in g3 still do (draculaura being Asian an a top A+ student with nagging parents and lagoona being a spicy Latina) while SH just like the doll line it came from RH Would only have straight , wavy and loosely curly hair types, nothing else beyond that , only recently did we get a SH doll in series 2 whom has micro braids(whom is beautiful but we did not need to wait ages to get our second sh/rh doll with micro braids, OMG has been killing it with the amount of Black hairstyles they’ve been giving us)
@RattusRattus Жыл бұрын
Ok thank you for saying this cause everyone always talks about MH being the pinnacle of divertsity in doll lines and I’m like ? I mean I guess ? But also you look at some huge stereotypes (jinafire being Asian with very overbearing parents, isi with her hodge podge “Native American inspired” garb, etc etc) but I wasn’t sure if I was being overly picky And with RH/SH I don’t know too too much about the doll lines but you’re so right about the hair ? And I literally never noticed till you said so? But yeah they all have basically the same straight / wavy/ maybe tiny curls from looking at photos and it’s like. Do better. Anyway thank you for your comment ❤️

@@RattusRattus a lot of (white) mh fans often look at the franchise though rose colored lense, only recently did they even start to consider g1 wasn’t perfect in its rep but that’s only when they decided g3 is cool now but even then would harass you for saying g3 isn’t any better either(I got called toxic for just noting how horribly they did clawdeen by a white doll influencers even tho I said I’m litrealy mixed Afro Latino like she is) even in regards to other types of rep it wasn’t the best @ I love that Twyla is autistic but it’s hard to enjoy it knowing they took away all of ghoulia’s autistic traits to make her more nt, same with Frankie, it’s hard to ignore the fact Mattel forced sanders to take out every lgbt rep he wanted to add , your definetly not picky people just gotta stop repeating this cycle I have a couple RH and SH dolls(ironically most from my mom since she really loves them) and it’s been a common compliment that the only dolls with Black hair we got were Vanessa, moanik I think is how you type her name?? And junior high crystal , that’s about it.. even with the divas whom are all Black the most we got is the gold one who has 3B hair the other two have straight and wavy hair , people even tried to claim glitch is white due to her grey pale skin and straight hair even tho she’s Black, it’s so weird cause MGA can do Black hair so well with OMG but just not RH And np!! It’s been something I noticed too with alt dolls

I agree that representation is always lacking in the doll community, but there’s been a rainbow high doll with brown & rainbow micro braids out since 2021. There was also two different dolls from last year (one boy from PCH & junior high Krystal) that have textured kinky curls. That should be the bare minimum, but Rainbow High/Shadow High is truly on the better side of this problem…

I met the creator of Little Apple Dolls maybe ten years ago at london comic con! She was really sweet and I got two signed dolls and posters off her quite cheap because there was a problem with manufacturing and it looked like they weren't going to continue. Yes bratz was iconic for that! I’m kinda disappointed honestly that it didn’t carry through to the Bratzillaz - that doll line seemed overwhelmingly white (but it may be ignorance on my part about the characters) - but yeah I wish Bratzillaz had the diversity that Bratz had 💔

I don’t have my doll resources with me so I’ll have to stop there but it’s a start for a giant list part 2.

If I absolutely LOVED everything else about the doll, and hated just that one aspect, I'd repaint the negative with an icon I love and really make the doll my own. 🥰 I have some dolls in my collection where, the face paint was just INCREDIBLE, but the costume was... meh. 🤷 So I bought it (the type of vintage doll I collect can be had VERY cheap, so it's easy to splurge, then customize creatively, like your improvised gas mask! 👍🙂) This happened with a T-shirt I bought, then noticed in a derogatory term for women in tiny print right in the middle of the T-shirt. 😳😞 🤔I got fabric paint and painted a sunflower 🌻 over it. 🙂👍

Omg, Hi! I’m the person who made the old Little Apple Doll videos :) I made those on a little digital camera and a dream haha. There is a Facebook group that has the story books of every mainline doll posted :) I also used to have a Living Dead Doll channel back in the day called LivingDeadDollGuy :) I had completely forgot about Lulu’s belt. I even had her once upon a time and had no memory of it. I will give a little explanation as to how it may have ended up on her. Back in 2005 the rebel flag was still a well used symbol by people in the south, most didn’t comprehend the actual evilness behind the flag. I was more commonly used as a symbol of southern pride (if you were in the south. Of course.) It was definitely a mistake and really tasteless and racist, but I don’t think that was the intention at the time. Personally, I didn’t see much discussion over the flag until about the early 2010s. I’d say now it is pretty widely accepted that the flag is NOT appropriate on any level, but in the early 2000s, it was kind of a lawless land. I will say, though, one of the creators for Living Dead Dolls is a genuinely bad person. Ed Long. HOWEVER, he is no longer with the company and the OTHER creator, Damien Glonek, is super nice and I don’t -think- is problematic. I could go on for hours with the issues of Ed Long lol

Oh just to let you know Tiny Tears as a doll stuck around for a while as there was more updated versions of her available over the years and I'm pretty sure I did own one as a kid and that would've been like 90s/early 00s

I love the Shadow High monochrome dolls. I want all the girls at some point. I don't mind if I find the 2 I am missing thrifting even nude as I don't like their outfits very much. They are just so gorgeous dolls. I actually have some G2 Monster High dolls that I like (yes! I know... sacrilege!) Shriek Wreck Draculaura and first day at school Cleo (I think is is that one but I am not sure). I actually prefer them to most G3 dolls (Oooops! I'm gonna get killed 🤭😱💀😃).

Is Shadow High counts as goth? The monochrome confuses me, and are the Storm twins wearing either punk or goth, or a sub genre of those?
@RattusRattus Жыл бұрын
I’d say shadow high is definitely “edgy” and has some punk/goth influences, but I wouldn’t consider them strictly representing the subcultures (tho some people disagree) I think it’s up to personal opinion tbh; but I’d say they’re more generally “edgy” than strictly “goth” :-)

Tbh I prefer the LDD bc they're for the goth 90's kids and they're better made than monster high especially when it comes to their themed creations that's more show accurate and monster high just uses the same mold and we can go on for days on the fact monster high rarely uses the boy mold and just reuses the girl mold. And LDD is made by an independent toy company which we love to see, and it's more my early 2000's teen goth phase, I also loved begoth dolls. There's one controversial LDD who is based on the Black Dahlia 😢 her name is even Dahlia, she is the only non-iconic. I would like the fashion victims but the realistic boobs makes me uncomfortable and body dysmorphic. And I used to love midnight magic and would get them alot at family dollar and dollar general

I grew up in the south in america, and a lot of the people here say the confederate flag is "heritage, not hate." We're brainwashed from a young age, cause no one talks about what the flag actually represented. It wasn't until I was in AP US History in high school that I really understood the gravity of the situation. While the belt was more than likely for shock, I know a lot pf southern collectors would have bought her very very fast, thinking she "represents them" (This is not excusing this btw!! Just sharing my experience with y'all)

For the confederate flag, you won’t find anyone apologizing for it just because if you drive out anywhere in the American countryside you will see them everywhere, even more so in the 90s-2000s era. It’s really gross but it’s just a reality here , and most people here see it as a blue colar hic flag rather than extremely racist, which it is. There’s also the murky waters of peoples family members that were enlisted to fight in the war and died, but that’s a entire other can of worms that’s pretty gray area and easy to sway into neo nazi territory. 😬

i guess my experience is biased by the circles i run in, but it's surprising to me that right-wing imagery would even make sense for these dolls from a capitalist standpoint? guess i'm just used to anti-fascist and leftist alt culture, some anarchist but nothing imperialist or actively bigotted
@RattusRattus Жыл бұрын
Yeah other than like , nazi punks or whatever they call themselves I don’t see a ton of overlap with alt subcultures and right wing ideals - honestly just a bad , insensitive (and confusing) accessory to add to the dolls

hi rat i dont want to come across as attacking or rude in any shape or form and i can tell u only have good intentions. i get lolita sun can be off putting and if you arent comfortable with her its very much so fine. no one should tell you not to be uncomfortable with something. that being said as a poc i i dont know if implying the choice was soley a nod to imperalism was very appropriate. now idk if she is a nod to lolita fashions from japan and so they chose the eyes for that reason (if so thats really kind of icky) but i wish you left it up for your japanese or asian viewers to decide if it was representative of imperealism or not. its just me personally as a poc viewer am pretty uncomfortabe when non poc individuals decide what is and isnt appropraite and im simply reacting as a viewer. once again this is in no way trying to attack you you and your channel are both very lovely i just wanted to share how i felt as poc alt person seeing that portion of the video
@RattusRattus Жыл бұрын
I’m so sorry. you’re right - thank you for your comment, I felt I should at least mention that the symbol could be tied to imperialism but I see how it was inappropriate. sorry for how it came off. Thank you for commenting, I apologize

@@RattusRattus dw there are no hard feelings whatsoever. and that lulu confederate doll was like the biggest jumpscare i had ever gotten and never would have known about mezco toys doing that had you not informed your viewers of it
@sharonthompson672 Жыл бұрын
I don't think she was deciding what is & isn't appropriate, I think she was just sharing her viewpoint, which is what she said she was doing, 15:30 as you and I are now doing. It's dialogue, not virtue signaling. Like, if you really want to get down to it, we're ALL poc, right? Just different hues. Humanity is a rainbow. ❤️🌻🌈 Different ethnicities, different cultures, but all human. I think, she'd have to clarify, but I think she's speaking from a historic point of view and in THAT respect, she's spot on. 👍 (To clarify, how non-Japanese Asians view the rising sun flag, and how many Americans view the Confederate flag, that's a documented fact.)

@becky7603 Жыл бұрын
not one of the dolls she mentioned had anything to do with suicide or self harm. And the syringe design in the eye was just a measuring line like the side of the syrine not like her eyes were impaled with needles. Did you even watch the full video ?

@@becky7603 the lving dead dolls for example oe overdosed on aspirine and another one hunged by a noose..... i rest my case. i didn't say that the doll with the seringe in her eyes had empaled eyes. but it's imagery that relate to drug abuse like heroin.
