I had hamsters as a kid (back in the 1970s), and knew a fair amount about them (for the times, but obviously we know much more about them today). I just got a hamster about 3 weeks ago (Mr. Data, after the Star Trek character--he's so kind, innocent, and lovable, like a hamster!), and I started watching your videos shortly thereafter. I have learned SO MUCH! I've upgraded him from a standard hamster cage to a two-level DIY enclosure made from two stacked containers connected by a tube: lower level for nesting and burrowing, upper level for feeding, foraging, drinking, sand-bathing, exercise-wheeling, and various other enrichment activities, like your idea for a hamster piñata made from a willow ball. He's still not entirely used to me--he knows I'm the treat guy and will come up to me to get them, but he still won't let me pick him up. That's ok, I can tell he's doing well, and he's not showing any of the stress-related behaviors you described in another video. So, thank you very much, Victoria, from myself and Mr Data! Love your videos, keep it up! By the way, you don't look like Ed Sheeran. More like Scarlett Johansson, I'd say

Its because of your channel I was able to finally try my best at giving my hams what they deserve. Its been hard, since Im on a tight budget, but Ive been trying so so hard. I managed to upgrade from a 50 x 30cm cage to one over 100 x 50 (we stuffed up the measurements slightly since its a diy cage but we know its over that!). Im saving for the savic plaza for my other ham currently. Id get him bigger than the savic but its all I have space for as I have a very small room and I can hardly walk already with one of mines enclosures! They now actually HAVE wheels, sand baths, different substrates (beech chips, coco fibre), a cork log and ill be getting more soon, more chews, hides, sprays etc. I cannot thank you enough and even if im still learning a lot Im trying my best because of you. Their diets improved a bit (went from plain pellets to harry hamster mixed with mealworms) and they finally got forage and healthy treats! So thank you so much, im gonna be forever grateful.

I recently came across your channel and it made me realize that my hamster's cage is too small and he doesn't have enough enrichment! I even got him the absolute biggest cage that the pet store offered, but he still only has 350 inches of floor space and only 4 inches of bedding. I'm un-learning a lot of misinformation and I'm gathering up materials to make a giant, 50 gallon size hamster cage. I've got the perfect space in my office for it, too! Thank you for all this information. I'm happy to know my hamster is going to have a much better life.

Love your videos! Regarding the semitransparent igloos, hamsters actually only have one color receptor in their eyes (whereas we have three and other rodents have two), so they can't see most colors. Which means that if, say, only red light is shining through bc the igloo is red, it will just be dark to them! Red light in general isn't seen by mice/rats/etc, but hamsters see even fewer colors than their relatives. Obviously the plastic issue remains though...
@VictoriaRaechel2 жыл бұрын
I wasn't talking about the colors but rather light 😊
@Luxrayspirit2 жыл бұрын
@@VictoriaRaechel Yes, I know! But because the igloos are colored, mostly only that color light is passing through and hamsters don't see that light (for most colors). It's just dark and opaque to them. It's good in situations where you need to be able to monitor them without waking them up or otherwise making them feel like they lack privacy 😀

@@VictoriaRaechel Light might not be a problem for hamsters. I have a Savic metro hamster heaven cage. I offer 2 nesting houses for my Syrian hamster, but she doesn't either of them. Instead, she sleeps in the tunnel system. Yes, really! She sleeps in the top section of tunnel system, the part that's suspended above the cage. And the tubing, as you know, is clear plastic and completely transparent. If light bothered her, then she'd obviously choose a different place to sleep.

Am I the only one that thinks it would be a good idea if Victoria did a video/video series where she chooses a certain hamster which would probably be the Syrian since it’s the most popular. Then she could choose like a budget maybe like $300-$500 not including cost of hamster. Then she could make plans/Kit where she tells her recommended supplies for the hamster with the budget. For example she could find Amazon cage and all the supplies on online stores and basically showcase what combination of them would be good.

I offer my hamster a water dish and water bottle, so whatever she’s in the mood for she can use. The funny thing is when I first gave it to her when she touched it she jumped like 20ft back and was terrified of it, but now she’s fine with it and likes it!
