It requires a higher level of responsibility and often leadership than an optional school based club. We also notice when you join a bunch of stuff your senior year to pad your application. These are kids, they don’t need to be wasting their childhood trying to achieve this absurd standard of success. They can have a great future and go a good school by trying hard at the things they do and leaving time to learn how to be a person, not just a list of accomplishments. If it is fulfilling to them to do these things, that should be why they should do them, not impress colleges. The most important thing they will do in high school to prepare them for life is not starting a business, winning national competitions, or founding a club, it’s adjusting to responsibilities and identity as they grow up. That can’t be expressed on a college application, and it doesn’t need to be. The point of doing things is not to show that you did them, but learning from them.

Mid list. rankings are misleading names, and this is obviously graded according to very selective colleges which isn’t specified. starting a club should also be much higher than “ok” even for selective colleges. I know 3 people from my school and nearby schools who’s most impressive activities were starting a math club, and that was the main reason they got in, making that activity much better than just “ok”. additionally i’ve heard from ivy league people who worked in admissions part time jobs are not seen as bad or even just ok, they are seen as a good activity.

What a joke! If you already have “entrepreneurial ventures”, why the hell would you need a degree?!? Let alone considering the worth of going to an Ivy League.

There's still some things she didn't cover that look good, like science olympiad or battle of the books, which you have to dedicate time to and winning a medal looks especially good 🤷♀️

Quick question: I want to go to a top college for biochemistry (premed route) and most of my ECs and pretty good and geared to that. But I also have a book related instagram with a few thousand followers. Should I add this on my application or put another club or something else instead. Any insight would be appreciated!

@ You have to take like a 2 week course about saving lives how to bring back the heart , how to use a defibrillator, how to help wounds and concussions and so on and then get tested on it and if you fail you can’t get a license (the license renews every 2 years and you can’t get one until you’re 15)

@@cashback3293 oh wasnt aware of that actually though it does seem mostly first aid focused compare that to running a small business where you get pretty thorough with the subject i dont know for sure but id assume that the admissions officers just dont see being a lifeguard as something youd take due to a passion for medical science first aid seems to be more of a thing you need to know to be a lifeguard _just in case_ than something that you'll routinely use

Um why do the extra activities you do determine if colleges look into your application? Here in Ireland applications are based purely on scores from our examinations and an interview with the college, if you are doing an extracurricular for the sake of your college it is not extracurricular’
