When I was smaller, I used to be praised for being talented and told I'd do great things, but over time, I guess I just let go of that. I'm in my junior year of high school, but I feel like I have nothing to my name. No credit. I guess I was always waiting for an opportunity to come to me to do extracurriculars or projects or volunteering. Now, everywhere I go, I get reminded of all the things I could have done but didn't. It's not just for the sake of college applications, but also for myself. I just really dont want to be a failure. I'm glad I found your video. Hope your channel gets a lot, lot bigger.

In most Asian countries (the continent), all that is required to apply for university is a good standardized test score. I used to be a really active student in middle school with a passion and curiosity beyond everyone at my age and my environment. Even though I managed to get into the second best high school in my city (by taking a standardized test of course) it killed what made me special. I would have dozens of really good extracurriculars if it wasn't for my high school environment and the education mentality Like seriously, I would have been a really strong applicant but now i am in my senior year and I don't have that much of impressive stuff and I will probably spend this year studying another stupid fucking test
@Lalalalala988722 ай бұрын
Applicaitons in the US are very different than those in other countries. Also, applying to ivy leagues is fine and all but u shoule prob apply to easier schools that still have amazing programs (Georgia Tech, Boston U, U Mich, etc.)

I'm a freshman and I'm watching all I can to improve myself,it's a bit hard because where I live there's no ap classes and the only extracurricular we have is sports,which I would love to join but everyone is just really rude and harsh on beginners 😭I play 3 instruments,take part in every oratory contest(public speaking),do art and I'm at the top of my class but honestly I don't think its impressive. Im planning to run for Student Council President when Im a senior,join the chess club,join debates and join more activities which I enjoy (like dancing,singing and more instruments^^) :D I feel really burnt out and i dont know how to catch the attention of the people when they look at my achievements and stuff.I tried to build my confidence by joining competitions but that only made it worse and ruined everything.Everything is biased and it feels like you have to be a certain age or race to win.However,This year I want to make a change!!:DD Im learning more pieces,getting more serious about studies and I'm working on improving my skills in other areas!!Im not gonna let my emotions and failures take me downn!!>:) I typed too much,sorry😭 I found this video informative and helpful,Thank you :) *Consistency*,in my opinion,is one of the biggest and really important value that will help you be successful:DD

Good luck to you. My recommendations would be to consider taking online ap courses or dual enrolling at a local college. Dual enrollment is nice, because if you can get your prof. to like you, you can become a college tutor or join a summer research program while still in high school. That’s what I did. Regarding student council, if they let you run for multiple positions, by all means run for president. If not though, I’d advise to run for a safer position that will help set up a good resume to become student council president in your later years. I’m just saying this because, in any school, it’s super unlikely for a freshman to become student council president. It’s almost always going to be a senior or junior, not just cause of academics, but because of connections & reputation.

I can feel your energy. If I knew everything that I knew in Junior and Senior year, I could have easily made it to the Ivys. Love learning, lock in, and think about your purpose. If you figure out your purpose, making it into an ivy will turn easier. There is bias on race, but I sternly believe that you can do anything you set your mind to. It’s just a matter of sticking with it for that extra few miles. Good luck, and I hope your future plays out like you want it to.

Yeah I currently have no ECs, but I have a plan set in place to get some: - In band, section leader(next year I am guaranteed) and varsity tenor sax player currently, I just have to make a region band/be an area/state qualifier or make region jazz band/be an area/state jazz qualifier next september - Just stack up on volunteer hours(I only have 12) - Starting a club with a friend to help people find volunteer hours in different fields(law, medicine, computer science, business, etc) - Engineering Design Club at my school that I'm joining - Planning to pursue filing a patent idea thats a computer accessory(not exactly 100% planned out yet) - Already have one law internship and one cs internship lined up for next year, I can bridge the gap between the two - Playing golf, but it's currently a hobby. If I get a job at a local golf club or if I start playing tournaments that could mean something - I can just code some project - Planning to apply to multiple cs summer camps across different colleges and maybe jump into some youth organization from there - NSHSS, not in NHS currently but I will be next year So if I follow this plan my ECs will at least be alright, and I'm fine with that. Any suggestions would be nice.

@ameliaskena36986 ай бұрын
Hi! I go to Duke and my advice would be to keep trying new things but stay consistent with one/two clubs that you enjoyed this year! I had no idea what I wanted to do freshman year but I stayed consistent with some interests and then was able to cater that to a specific narrative for applications senior year. If your school has honor societies for languages (French or Spanish), I’d recommend joining/ getting a leadership role in that because no matter what your major you apply with is, it shows your dedication to expanding your learning. And then my last tip would just be joining anything that expands your community outreach whether it’s by volunteering or advocating- as that isn’t major specific but it proves you to be a good citizen of society!

I’m not in college or even high school yet, but what might help is watching some small free courses about different topics to see what you want to get into. Like for example if one of the things that are interesting to you is programming, you can watch a video about algorithms or web development. But do what you wanna do, I’m not sure if this is good advice so good luck. 👍 Edit: And if you want to go deeper into like the top three choices you can go get better courses that go deeper into the topic.

My general tip of "having a theme" within one's application is closer to an advice rather than a rule. Just because I advise you to do one thing, doesn't mean another is completely wrong. There is always wriggle room! I think it'll do more harm than good to completely shift and change your application just because things don't align. You're proving your competency, leadership, and overall character in different ways and that's okay! It seems like you're doing incredible things outside of school so I wouldn't worry if I were you :) (just make sure they're not shallow activities that barely have impact!) Essays is a whole other beast to deal with but really use your creative imagination, you can make it whatever you want it to be. Just try not to come off as this "know it all" because we all certainly don't. Rooting for you!

Conistency! And I have a question: I’m going to be a sophomore after the summer ends- I had to move from Florida to New York in the middle of freshman year. So now I have to start all over when it comes to rising up the chain and perfecting my craft. Do you think since I’m starting in sophomore year, I’m too screwed to get into a top tier school?

Great question! Let’s trying playing that situation out. Say you move to New York and start all over, but would you give up on your dreams? Just because you had a little setback? You still have THREE years to develop and build your extracurriculars. THREE. YEARS. Even if the odds aren’t in your favor there’s no point in giving up. Worst case scenario you give it your best and still end up at a top 50 school. Ivy leagues aren’t the end all be all!

@@sh2nu1ee so even tho my commitments and clubs and rising opportunities would only be 3 years long and not 4 years, that won’t be a huge issue?
@sh2nu1ee6 ай бұрын
@@Just_Ellie4 nope, the length doesn't matter as much as the actual impact you have, so get after it! wishing you luck

I am already in senior year of High school . Will doing this help me? I played badminton until junior year now due to a shoulder injury i don't. But i do play the piano and do classical dance and i do paint write poems and short stories and also have joined a lot of clubs over my middle school and now in high school.

Middle School doesn't matter so forget about everything you did then. You gotta make your extracurriculars seem special or you're cooked. Did you get any stories/poems published? Did you receive any award for your paintings, or decide to sell them? Did you play the piano at a recital or get any accolades? If not, then lie and say you did lol. They're too lazy and it's too difficult to check.

I had a Startup(based of Software Tech), in class 10 but it failed, and I learnt a lot of Lessons from it, Do you think it would be a strong point for me to get considered in An IVY?

Consistency- I am an aspiring CS student, and i want to go to ivy leagues, specifically MIT, and i have a particular passion for fencing, how would i twist it to make it a unique extracirricular for ivy leagues? Fencing isnt in my school either, an external program.

Just start something bro, anything for that matter. The more you do stuff the more you figure yourself out, and you also meet great people as well!
