I'm currently learning Kung Fu and my teacher really impressed me on my first day. I did boxing before so my punches weren't that bad. He showed me wrong. He said attack me and closed his eyes. At first I didn't want to attack him, but he made me do it and I attacked from every angle, but he defended it all with his eyes closed. I was fucking impressed. It is a traditionally Brazilian dance/fight/play, it was really created that way, a way that the slaves found to train their ways of fighting, but without seeming to be doing it. Tae Kwon Do depends a lot on the school where you take it. My school was not the watered down version. They did not just hand out belts like candy. On average it took around 10-15 years to earn a first degree black belt. We spared every class just about. We did more sparing than hyungs and we incorporated grappling, joint locks, take downs and throws, kind of like old school karate before it became watered down. My instructors were aware of the shortcomings that TKD could have and openly encouraged students to cross train in Ju Jitsu, Judo, Boxing, Muay Thai, etc… , and the instructors did as well. There are a lot of TKD Mc Dojo’s though, so people should be careful if they’re serious about training for self defense. I’d recommend cross training in other martial arts like we do. There is no one system with all the answers in my opinion.

Doesnt matter if a TKD school is a traditional or a real deal. When TKD first met Muay thai in 19s, those hardcore real TKD fighters got rolled over by Muay thai fighters again and again.

same with mine but alot of people only see competition me personally i currently train traditional tkd and it involves alot including throws ground defence uppercuts elbows and knees however none of this is aloud in most wtf competitions meaning alot of people see it as bad whilst i do agree martial arts like muay thai boxing ect ect work alot more often it also depends on the martial artist themselves ive sparred alot of my friends and using tradional tkd ive managed to "win" almost all the time however i cant say it was pure tkd as i also take boxing and without taking boxing i definitely wouldnt be as good combining the two makes an incredible striking advatange so to sum up it tkd depends on the school your taught at and how you adapt it into a real world fight or even spar!

A common misconception about Judo is that it only contains throws/takedowns, however ground work (Ne Waza) is very commonly taught. In my gym at least, it is incredibly common to practice complex chokes, strangles and arm locks. If a person lands in their side after being thrown, it only scored a Wazari ( a point ) for the Tori, which does not equal a win, but will affect the game at the end of a match if it ends in a tie; it will be used as a tiebreaker, the same as any shido. Once a person lands on their side you do not stop, you will attack and attempt to pin your opponent to the the mat. Or go for a submission using chokes, strangles, and arm bars. In my opinion, ground work is a lot more akin to Judo than people seem to perceive. ( Btw I have been doing Judo 8 years, and am 14 :) )

Salute from Luxembourg 🙂 yes my father was a judo trainer too and he made his students train like 40% stand-up 60% bottom as often the fight continued and the opponents lost endurance in ground game but there is sure a lot. As I remember its always 6/6 for each grade means 6 standup techs and 6 ground techs per grade but i guess it depends on your gym too.

It's traditional it was forbidden to learn how to fight in African colonies so they made it so you don't touch the adversary. You also work with pretty much every limb depending on the sensei but it is a bit for show. . It does give you the "consciousness" of avoiding the opponent as well as never being sent to the ground. It has a lot of takedowns like really a lot of them, as well as very creative ways of both kicking and punching. It is mostly practiced in Brazil as it developed there from the African slaves, and Brazil is the home of Brazilian Juzitzu Wich is pretty powerful therefore the more modern capoira depending on the teacher may go more towards dance or fighting. I agree that by itself is a low tier altho I think it has some very good discipline and knowlege that you don't get anywhere else. (You also do stick fighting there) (The hands were not chained there is both elbows and punches you attack the throat eyes stomach there are also many takedowns that use the hands) just taking the doubts if ya have any feel free to ask I'm Portuguese with Brazilian roots

Honestly capoeira is probably my favorite martial art because of the historical context behind it. What happens was a group of slaves planned on starting a revolution but couldn’t practice fighting as their captors would stop and punish them for doing it. Their solution was to create a martial art that could pass as dancing so they could practice in broad view of their captors. Their captors were none the wiser and were easily taken down by their former slaves once the revolution began. It really doesn’t get enough recognition as it’s a really cool fighting style.

Hey, Im Brazilian, so I know quite a bit about capoeira. It's more or less of a dance, and the origin comes from the African slaves brought by the Portuguese; the slaves needed to train martial arts to defend themselves if needed. Now the Portuguese people didn't allow them to train because they could become strong, so that's why it looks more or less of a dance. The reason being is that the Portugal people thought it was a dance while in reality, it was teaching them how to fight. So that's why they added the music and dance style, to cover up their real plan. Capoeira is a style that involves more kicks than with hands, as well as being about the fluidity of one's body.

@@erenerikci3263 Capoeira Techniques are useful in the Sense that the kicks can be insanely powerful (as your entire body weight is more or less in motion and congregates on the spot of impact). Also pretty much any 'style' can have some practical application in MMA, the question is how you implement it. You see it time and time again with MMA fighters that come from unique backgrounds, that implement styles that aren't 'standard' for MMA. No one really believed 'Wing Chung' would ever have any application in MMA until Tony Ferguson actually started punching peoples faces in with Wing Chung blocks and punches.

I started with Krav Maga as my first martial art. And I have to say that in sports fighting or sparring Krav Maga is not really good. So for that part D would even fit better. Also those techniques aren’t very useful on the street as long as you don’t practiced them for years (which made me change to MMA, I like the striking and kicking part more). But for street fighting, in my opinion there’s no better martial art. Because the key points that our instructor told us were: If you can, run away! If not, destroy him within the first attacks you do. Because as long as he cannot attack you, you can „control“ the fight. Have been in two street fights (both because a guy waned to harass a girl) and I would guess with just MMA Training I wouldn’t have won them so clearly. As an addition: We did sparring after each session for everybody who wanted to :) So all in all the grade is fair, but in my opinion Krav Maga doesn’t fit here. On street fighting it would be A. But it is not designed for sport fighting, so it would an D from my point of view.

At least from my training, besides the ethos of life-death fighting, we mostly went over the basics of stance, pressure testing, sparing, and simple rememberable strikes and grappling. The striking/grappling and sparing was by far the most common physical thing we did, then maybe we practiced more particular stuff like knife defense or dirty hits once per week. I guess it depends on instructors though. I felt it was an excellent base going into boxing and jui jitsu as the major differences was changes in stance and more complex and specialized tactics

I started with Taekwondo between the ages of 7 to 10 in Hawaii, and as a stand alone art its definitely a C or D tier art. However, once I began Muay Thai when I was in my early 20s, the knowledge that Taekwondo gave me allowed me to progress twice as fast as most students and I was able to integrate both arts (which annoyed the hell out of my Muay Thai instructors because I often used a narrow stance and switched stances a lot while sparring whit Muay Thai classmates). In my opinion Taekwondo, or to a lesser extent, Karate, are great base martial arts for kids. Then when they wake up and realize Muay Thai is the king of stand up arts they will have a much deeper range of attacks to draw on.

I also have started training in Muay Thai within recent years and I found my Taekwondo background extremely useful. However, my Taekwondo school is not just traditional Taekwondo. There is still a good amount of focus on hand techniques along with self defence and one-step. My grandmaster trained in many different martial arts which provided the school much more knowledge than just traditional Taekwondo. I would say Taekwondo is the cherry on top, it can set a fighter much further ahead than someone especially because of reaction time.

I grew up doing Taekwondo but feel like I was supremely lucky in who I had as an instructor. My sensei was an unassuming Vietnam veteran who taught for free in a dank old 1950's basketball gym. He taught for free because he largely considered it a Christian ministry in a very poor community where many kids didn't have structure, discipline, positive role models, or the financial means to pay for lessons. He did this 3-4 days a week for around 30 years. The man is a saint. I started at 6 years old and didn't get my black belt until I was 16, and I was his star pupil. He just had stern rules. #1 You don't advance to the next belt unless you're actually showing the mettle to merit it. #2 You can't earn a black belt before 16, regardless of talent or time spent. We started every session with great a great stretching regiment that has stuck with me to this day, now at 42 years old. He made us do knuckle push-ups on the hardwood court every session. The gym didn't have air conditioning so we trained in the smothering heat and freezing cold. I remember a couple years where he actually made the advanced belts run barefoot around the gym several times in the snow. I know this all sounds fantastical, but he really did this, and it was so character building. He's now a 9th degree black-belt. I only know this because I ran into him while visiting my small hometown a couple months ago. Hadn't seen him for over 20 years but he still looks like he's about 50-55, though he's actually around 70. One of those people you just always count yourself lucky to have known. While I understand your gripes with TKD (I get it, I went on to spend some time in JKD, Golden Gloves, and MMA), I think HIS type of TKD would be immeasurably better than what 99% of the McDojos are offering.

Karate standards are terrible nowadays. I’m blessed to have had an incredible sense I who taught me so much in life and in martial arts (Goju-Ryu karate). Sadly, he passed away recently, and my Dad has since taken over our dojo as sensei. My sensei was like another father to me, and his tragic death was so sad. But he died saving his wife’s life, and that is the greatest way to love. I’ve been training harder than ever, motivated to carry on his karate legacy. I hope to raise karates standards one school at a time.

I've been doing Taekwondo since the age of 5 and thought it was amazing style. Growing up I hear about some schools where you can get a black belt after only two years and even had some friends who have received black belts from schools like these. I found this strange because my instructor was very picky about what was good enough for belt testing and there I thought there would be no way that someone could rank up that fast. I learned that the standard for Taekwondo outside of my instructor's dojang was very low and people claiming to have black belts from such schools could barely fight. I'm very glad I joined the dojang I did because my instructor is amazing and prizes quality over quantity. I'm nearing 10 years of Taekwondo in August and I'm testing for my red belt next week. Depends if you consider sanda as kungfu. If so it's arguably one of the most effective and versatile. Good speed, good power, bladed stance so good mobility, grappling component so good takedown defense. It's great in ring sport and street context with multiple attackers where you need the mobility and the ability to disable your attackers whether it's a strike or throw, and you can easily run away if you need to

Black belt earned too. Later I switched to Karate, progressed well, even became an assistant teacher, sometimes running classes on my own for new students. was in over 5000 fights, 98 percent victories. Worked as a bouncer at clubs, never lost there, took on 3 boxers in real fights and won. I started taekwondo over 10 years ago and am thankful that my first school focused on self defense aspects along with forms and sparring. I started at a wtf school and was surprised that they didn't focus a lot on self defense and punches but rather it was all about kicks. My current school is similar to my first in that it's pretty balanced in the self defense, forms, sparing. We do full contact but of course it's light so no one gets hurt. Full force contact happens on the bags. It took me 2.5 years to earn my blue belt and due to a long hiatus, I have started over and am about to test for my yellow belt. At the end of the day, martial arts is a great stress relief when you have the oportunity to spar and just take your anger out on something. It's so fun and it truly is an art. I think any of the styles can do a ton of damage with the right training and situational awareness.

As a tkd practicioner, it makes me feel kinda sad to hear you talking about how tkd schools are today and not being able to answer back saying you're wrong, because you're right! I consider myself very lucky, cuz I managed to find a more traditional tkd school, in the small town where I live on the south of Brazil (here in the South, taekwondo isn't really popular, most people just know of judo). We still train for World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) competition, since the classes are financed by the town hall, and if we don't participate and give results on competition, they won't let us use the space for free. We are focused in kicks (as taekwondo always was and will always be), but we also practice elbows, knees, punches and clinches a lot. I haven't found the opportunity yet, because of me being a teenager, but I'd really love to participate on a kickboxing competition, so I can test and maybe prove to myself the real effectiveness of old school taekwondo! :D

Did capoeira for 12 years. It’s not just about kicks; there are also knees head buts elbows Palm strikes sweeps and throws. Most of it is hidden as when you ‘play’ you have the choice as to be playful or aggressive. There is also the mindset which is about pretending to be friendly until the other lowers their guard. A lot of capoeira is about using a certain mindset; the mindset of people without power, without the luxury of chivalry- the philosophy of street smarts- malandragem meu Mano.

I learned Japanese Jiu Jitsu for about 5 years back in the early 2000's. About halfway through my training our school had a major philosophy shift, resulting in an entirely new curriculum. Pre-shift I'd have described it as a much more aggressive form of Aikido (with joint locks and all that crap) combined with Judo (real Judo with much more ground work and not just takedowns). The few kicks we had were never higher than waist high and used more for controlling your opponent than damage (usually low roundhouses to the shins and thigh to slow your opponent down with an emphasis on closing the gap to grappling range). Post-shift pretty much all of the Aikido was stripped out and replaced with something more similar to Krav Maga. The Judo techniques were also replaced with something that looked more similar to the grappling in BJJ. We had kind of a side curriculum where a lot of the older techniques were relegated to. Mastering these techniques was not required for belt advancement but the expectation was that you would keep proficiency in some of them, with kind of a JKD philosophy around them that you would be required to learn all of the core curriculum and by brown and black belt had mastered a few techniques from the side curriculum that particularly suited your particular style. We had two main instructors who owned the club. One was a former Taekwando guy who also trained in Arnes de Mano (so stick fighting was also part of the side curriculum) and Japanese Jiu Jitsu. The other had a background in Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (which was rare to find back then). I'd put our particular style in C tier

That's right! But you forgot to mention that BJJ, Boxing, Muay thai and the rest are only good in the ring, not on the streets! A fairly accurate description though.
@notricky1680
@notricky1680 4 жыл бұрын
@@mightymeatmonsta What??? Those + wrestling (and maybe Judo) are the ones that work best in the streets. Most streetfights end up being fistfights, aka amateur boxing. If you get cornered/pushed to a wall, clinch work, elbows, and knees of muay thai make up for boxing's lack of diversity. A good body slam to the floor of wrestling or judo will end the fight instantly, almost every time. If you do end up on the ground (which 90% of fights do, apparently), a wrestling scramble or BJJ are your only options. A scramble back up to your feet is always recommended, as you dont want your opponent's buddies to curb stomp you. Lethwei could replace boxing and muay thai combo, and krav maga is supposed to be the only one that is exclusively for self defense with no recreational and sport aspect, but those aren't easy to find in America

Current wrestler here, in my opinion, wrestling is the best base to start martial arts. I do not think it is the only thing you should do but, if you only do wrestling you could still handle yourself in a fight with a double leg and then ground and pound. I also do Karate and some Judo and BJJ and my wrestling helped tons. Love the content keep it up.

As much as I love traditional Chinese martial arts for every aspect of life, when it comes to self defense effectiveness it’s not really on par with some of the other arts. It’s very showy and spiritual and fantastic exercise, and can be very useful for self defense, most traditional Chinese martial arts are not meant as anything other than a precursor for weapons training. Unarmed Chinese martial arts are like a boxer only being allowed to throw jabs and straights. It can be effective but it’s incomplete. Muay Thai is my preferred art, both for sport and for self defense. It’s fun, it’s effective, there’s nothing to hate. It might be lacking in the spiritual side, but that’s why I also practice baguazhang and hung gar forms for spiritual health.

I should probably get back into belt testings. I’ve been doing TKD since I was 14 and I’m currently 29 and I stopped going to belt testings when I reached green belt blue stripe so I’ve been sitting at the same belt rank for the past 14 years XD my instructors keep pushing for me to progress seeing as I attend every class 5 days a week 4-5 hours a day but my true emphasis is the sparring classes rather than belt promotions. IMO belt ranking isn’t the only indicator of ones skill level as I’ve seen plenty blue belts that demonstrate more skill, power, speed and ferocity than some black belts and higher hence my lack of interest in progression.

Just finished the video, and I have some things I'd like to add .. particularly to the Capoeira part because as you said "you didn't know as much as the other martial arts" which is fine but at the same time can't be judged in the same way as other martial arts in this tier list.. Having said that, I feel that there was a bit of an injustice done with this evaluation. When I was younger I didn't know which martial art to start with and I stumbled across Capoeira. With it being my first step into the martial arts world (and having practiced later on more intensely taekwondo, jiu-jitsu and just a bit of karate) I can confidently say I wouldn't appreciate any of these previously mentioned martial arts as much as I do now if it wasn't for Capoeira. It didn't just give me strong kicks as you said. It does also have a great ranking system, with sensei's that first teach you the history of Capoeira and why it is like it is (it looks like a dance because it was created by slaves that couldn't practice fighting or they would be punished, so they masked these exercises/fights by "dancing"). Capoeira, for me, was the best basis I could have gotten being a kid at the time, this because it showed me how off balance I was and how I didn't know how to properly move my body, it showed me (through the rhythm changes, because Capoeira also teaches you an instrument which is used to determine the pace of the fight/"dance") how to adapt my body to different changes of pace, from going slowly to moving fast which requires you to have a strong knowledge on how your body moves. But, of course it also allows you to greatly improve your flexibility with various moves that incorporate all your body as well as striking for various positions, whether it be laying down, crouched or standing. Overall, I know Capoeira isn't the best art but having practiced it for 7 years when I was younger, and then hearing that just taking it for a few months and be done with it would be good .. well I just can't agree and that's fine. After I tried taekwondo, directly after Capoeira, I see how some people would feel that it's lacking due to the not having direct contact strikes to an opponent but that is also a lack of knowledge on how Capoeira is supposed to be taken in by each individual. For me it showed that you need a great deal of control, fluidity and flexibility when it comes to anything in martial arts and even outside of it. I wish you could have the same experience as I had with it because I wouldn't rank it as an F tier but more towards a D or C .. and that is coming from someone that really appreciates what Capoeira has done for me. Sorry for the gigantic ramble but hopefully this gave you a little bit of an insight on Capoeira! Cheers!
@lugaruclone
@lugaruclone 4 жыл бұрын
My view is that Capoeira is not the best martial art, but it is the best training system. You are in a circle sparring against anyone who chooses to enter, trying very hard to do your best moves without injuring yourself or each other, with music making you aware of timing. When you watch a capoeira guy fight the dance goes away and the hyper awareness of the opponents moves and balance remains.

There are two forms of taekwondo. I myself am a student of ITF Taekwondo, The original style by General Choi. What I've learned and what it involves is a variety of kicks (Twisting, turning kick, side kick, axe) variety of punches and other hand techniques ( crescent punch, upset punch, bear claw, knife hand, arc hand..ect). Elbows are also uses in various directions. Knee techniques are used as well. And other miscellaneous parts. There is also grappling in the self defense techniques. Ground techniques as well. There is more to this in depth. We can talk on the side of you'd like. The issue is that something like WTF gets the spot light which is a modified by North Korea government. (General Choi had not been pleased with the government in his time) Popular in Olympics. Demonstrating mainly kicking and small amount of various punches. What I'm getting at is that there is a difference in WTF and ITF. The rules restrict a lot of techniques that are in tournaments and even in the UFC
