Most brand new type S (61-65k CAD) I've seen listed are asking less than a lightly used fl5(65-70K+CAD). Was car shopping as the type R got announced. MSRP was just within budget so I was excited. Then mark ups basically happened to the entire hot hatch segment. Couldn't get past the looks of the N so ended up getting a BRZ no mark up. Great car when u can find some twisties or track but kinda beats u up in longer commutes. If I were to shop in today's market, I'm honestly tempted at a lightly used mk8 golf R for 45k ish. Yes the engagement is lacking but still a good value at that price. German depreciation means it's still almost 5k cheaper than a used GR corolla core and the near same price as pre facelift fk8 type Rs.

Enjoyed the series. You and I have such similar taste in cars. I agree almost entirely with your list. I had a 2020 ND2 and then got the FL5. The amount of reviewers waxing lyrical about FL5, I was afraid it would expose how inferior the MX5 is, because I loved that car. And FL5 simply didn't. I had both cars together for a total of 9 months before I had to get rid of the Mazda. But given the "Porsche-esque" praise FL5 always gets, which is justified, I now see the MX5 as the most fun new sports car on earth. Nothing tops that. People get all hung up about lap times and capability, which the FL5 and so many other cars have in spades. But the MX5 pivots around the driver. You sit so low, amplifying the sensation of speed. The lack of weight is just a magical thing. FL5 feels like a bus compared to MX5 with so much car behind the driver. Same goes for every other regular car. MX5 has perfect pedal placement, zero rev hang, instant response, and no active safety features that switch back on with every drive. Starting to fall in love with my FL5, but no other new car will feel as 80/90's as an MX5. I believe we may have another 12-18 months of MX5 on sale before it ends production. I hope longer. Stupid financial decision for me, but I love that car too much to not pull the trigger on one. Prefer new as I like to run it in carefully for peace of mind. Glad you put both the MX5 and FL5 as your top 2.

You’re on the same page with me on cars and welcome to the club Tyler! It’s not the new best car, but it is one of the most fun and unique driving experiences: lightweight, pure, all RWD, and reminiscent to 80s/90s JDM cars. Would like a FL5, GRC, Supra, but would still miss having this experience. I would get a GR Yaris if that was available (seems more oversteery than GRC, more pure, and 2800lbs). Throughout your extensive comparison series, it seemed you didn’t give too much praise to the miata at all. In this video, I was already excited and surprised when you ranked the miata as 3rd noting and ranked it with the best shifter. I love my 2020 ND softtop only more and more daily driving exclusively top down in California. It’s the only new car that reminded me of fun lightweight 90s JDM cars that I enjoyed such as the original Miata NA, original MR2, and EF/EG Civics all under 2200lbs (Miata ND at 2334lbs). Plan to keep forever as my last fun gas car and add any used or cheap gas/ev 4 door in future when daughter turns 5. Still hope for more fun gas cars in the future but will see.

Great series; I really enjoyed it. I made a similar decision in summer '23, basically considering all of your top six. At the time, the Toyobaru twins, GR Corolla, Civic Type R, and Integra Type S were unobtainium in my area without massive dealer markups--dealers who were also very reluctant to give test drives--plus the latter three were priced beyond was I was comfortable spending even at MSRP. And I was tempted based on its glowing reviews, but never seriously considered the Elantra N because of a bad previous Hyundai ownership experience. In contrast, I was able to get $2K off MSRP on a new Miata RF GT (manual). Because it didn't have to be a practical car, it was a no-brainer and I've loved every second driving it. Side benefit: It gets amazing gas mileage, even when being thrashed. Probably can't say that about any of the others here. But...if I could have spent more and could have gotten one for MSRP, I think I would have bought the CTR or ITS. So I understand your dilemma in making a choice!

Feels like a much more livable car. I think my wife will enjoy riding in it now, instead of just willing to ride in it before. I think I will be keeping the CTR for a long time. The Miata was fun with the top down experience. I did not prefer the amount of body roll. With the top up and cruising at 80 on the highway, it was loud and did not feel as stable as other cars. Also, even though I am retired and do not need a super practical car, I could not even put golf clubs or fishing pole in the Miata easily. However, I understand why people love the Miata, but it just was not for me.

BUT I couldn't grow to love the looks of it I think when you buy a car you really have to love the way a car looks. The 2024s look worse in my opinion. The clutch was very weird mainly from a dead stop in first gear. The octane learning was a joke. Vehicle didn't feel that quick. So I'm trying to figure out what I should buy to replace it. Still looking. I was looking at miatas and joined a Facebook group. Seems like a lot of people are having transmission issues with the Miata. Synchro issues were they get a new transmission replacement or warranty Not sure when Mazda's going to fix that but it seems like a lot of people with 2023s are having that problem. The Civic Type r is a great car looks great in the front but the rear looks horrendous. I'm not a fan of all this new tech in these cars. Taking my time as prices continue to go down. Especially with a Nissan z. Lots of dealerships are having trouble selling those. I have owned the Miata, GRC and CTR all this year. Fortunate to get all of them at MSRP. I traded in the Miata and GRC and still own the CTR. All of them are great cars, but enjoy the CTR the most. Just nice that we still have a lot of good choices below $50k.

Just watched your Si video right before this. How would you compare the Si to the Type R? Ideally, I'd buy the Type R because its the better car, but it's a little to much of a stretch financially.
@Realistick2 ай бұрын
The type r is in a different world in terms of performance. Though, if you’re not planning on tracking or modifying it, the SI is a much better buy. You’ll save a ton of money in fuel, tires, brakes and obviously the purchase price too! If you do plan on pushing limits, save up for the Type R🤠 (or get a used one). The SI has most of the feedback and a good shifter so it’s rewarding on the road, it’s just not going to replace the type r for certain needs. Best of luck.

How tall are you? I'm 6'5" and feel Miata is out of my height range but otherwise love 'em, especially the RF. Hard to beat a powered automatic hardtop in addition to everything that a Miata brings to the table in the first place.

That feeling at the end? I get it. I think about trading my 2020 Miata I bought new constantly due to its impracticality for an Integra Type S. The miata is much more of an A to A car for me which substantially limits how often I can drive it compared to a fun A to B to A car that can get me and others around. It feels impossible to let go of, but I can't deny how infrequently I can drive it compared to a more all-around car, so I get stuck driving my pickup most of the time

Do you not drive as often mainly due to lack of space to carry things/people?

Is the GR Corolla a good daily driver? I work in finance so care about looks and I can only afford to have one, daily and reliable car. Wanting to replace my 2011 Kia soul soon and I don’t wanna go manual
@RealistickАй бұрын
It’s good if your primary goal is to have fun or you’re planning on hitting tracks! It’s tolerable as a daily for that type of person. But if you want a *good* daily and you’re not really tracking it or anything, consider a mazda3 turbo awd , VW Golf R or maybe a WRX. They’re all more forgiving.

@ this is the exact kind of advice i was looking for bro thank you. i don’t care about going on the track, just looking for a fun daily that isn’t awful to drive.

Surprised the WRX was not included in this list given what it offers for the price in the base and premium trims. While it may not be the best performer on tarmac, it's still fun and it trounces others when off road.
@Realistick2 ай бұрын
You're definitely right. I wanted to include the TR, but I was under 25 and Subaru's insurance policy is apparently too strict (just got press approval after my recent birthday). I also tried to get ahold of a modified VB, but I couldn't get it to work out.

I own a civic type R and yes it’s a blast and the speed can be fixed with a tune
@vr6gls2 ай бұрын
Why not include the MK8 GTI on this list? Especially since you included the Golf R. Some people find the GTI to be a bit more playful than the R, and it’s cheaper than the Elantra N, Civic Type R and Integra Type S.
@Realistick2 ай бұрын
I would agree that it’s a little more fun but I choose the Golf R for the series as it was more in-line with the CTR, GR Corolla and Integra Type S.
@layne43762 ай бұрын
Playful v.s. giant killer. The R is in a completely different league than the GTI.
@vr6gls2 ай бұрын
@@layne4376 Not really. The Golf R is only significantly faster than the GTI from a launch. From a rolling start, there isn’t a huge difference, the Golf R is slightly faster. Let’s also not forget that the FWD GTI Clubsport is faster than the AWD Golf R around the Nurburgring.
@shamalabadingdong2 ай бұрын
@@vr6gls we don't get the Clubsport here in NA unfortunately. And honestly I don't think the GTI we get stacks up well to the competition. The GTI is only cheaper than the EN in its lowest spec (S). The EN comes fully loaded, only has one model. Every other trim level of the GTI is more expensive.

Just for fun, I would have liked to see a WRX and a Dodge Hornet RT. It would be interesting to see how these 2 cars would score. I know the Hornet is a flop and Dodge cant give them away, but curious what the score would have been in this pack of cars.

As a '19 Bullitt owner that paid 49K for his car new, I can tell you right now the SAME options and power are NOT worth spending about 60k on a '24 GT for. The '24 is a 2015 interior with a massive iPad and the power of a 19-23 Bullitt or Mach1 for THOUSANDS more. Unless you really like the new look (which other than front/rear refresh is still VERY much a 2015, and I personally DONT like it) you'd save like 15-20k to get a lightly used 2019-23 GT Premium, and just spend $2,500 to put on the Ford Performance Power and Handling kits.
@andywithout2 ай бұрын
@@KeithSchwerin Well, maybe I did not explain myself. I have a GT Premium 2018 with 30k miles; it’s my dream car, so maybe I am a bit biased; I did not buy it new, and I would not buy any other car new ever again. I bought my first car (VN), and buying a new car doesn’t make sense. Now, I agree the interior in the new GT 24’ is a bit off and the screens scream Chinese car; I hate that interior too, That’s why I would never change my S550 if they didn't bring back the Mustang interior. I agree on everything you said; my comment was just to say that Mustangs are icons, and yes, buy always a very good used car instead of a new one.

I got out of my MX5 because its cupholder situation is unforgivable😭. You just need 'em man
@Realistick2 ай бұрын

@Saboda532 ай бұрын
Funny, but count me amongst those who LOVE those cupholders! Driver’s one hangs nice & close on the passenger side if you’re driving solo (which I do 80% of the time), and it then moves to between the seats with a passenger. Deceptively clever. But wait, there’s more! If you want more space, you can stow both of ‘em in the lockable cubby. Or just pull ‘em out and leave them in the garage. Finally, pick one up in your hand and examine the thing closely; it’s a little work of art! Deceptively simple, it’s somehow both light AND sturdy. Look at the finish; it’s a quality piece - a small bit of sculpture. And to think all this was conceived and executed for the world’s tiniest, least cupholder-friendly cockpit! That’s smart engineering. Typical Mazda thinking. In a word: brilliant! ❤️
@vlj11332 ай бұрын
If you need cupholders, use the MX-5's supplied cupholders. They work just fine, especially when you're driving solo. It's not that difficult.
