True, but many of those names add to the pun. Larry Butz sets up the “Hairy Butz” joke that Mia makes, Cody Hackins is a play on “coding/hacking”, “Penny” is a form of currency just like “Nichols/nickels”, etc etc. “Nicole” on the other hand doesn’t really create a pun (unless I’m missing something lol). I do see your point though, so many characters have such normal names (which make the puns that much better haha)

Excelsius is probably also a reference to the Excelsior Motor Company, which made some of the earliest motorcycles. “Excelsior” is used to connote something of a higher quality. For example, there’s a vanilla World of Warcraft quest called Excelsior because the goblin who gives it to you wants to make high quality leather boots.

Tabby as a first name is so cute! Like she’s a cat or something lol 🐱 Tbh I cackled when I found out about Eustace’s name bc to me it was nothing but an old man name. HOWEVER I’ve really only associated it with him for the past couple of months so it’s lost that connotation and now I love it. It’s preppy which suits a rich kid like him. I also saw some of his official dialogue from the demo video where he says, “I’m not just ANY rookie! I am a winning rookie,” which I think is super cute, so I’m fine with the name ‘winner.’ The name shaun fenn, idk, I like it for some reason. Like harvey MILK is such a random reference that it really makes the name for me lol. I like how they found a way to incorporate a marsh theme too with ‘fenn’

I'm pretty much against the idea you present so much of "if I consider a character is boring they should make their dialogue quirkier" that's not the point of a translation and that's unprofesional. I mean one thing is adapting jokes and search for equivalencies that can work in the language that is being translated to and other different thing is taint an original piece of work just cause the translator thought of inventing something.

"Dogen" comes from the name of a Japanese Zen Buddhist monk, and the official localization is similar in that they also gave him the name of a Buddhist monk, Bodhidharma. His character has some ties to Buddhism, hence why they chose "Dogen," not to mention it also acts as a play on the word "dog," which "Kanis" also does.

to be fair, a lot of the fanTL names were either so on the nose or nonsensical to the point the pun explanation felt like a stretch. But yeah, they did a good job though. It's just an official localization is now here lol

I've seen side-by-side comparisons to the fan translated version of AAI2 versus the demo and a lot of the characters seem a lot more lively and personality-filled. The fan translation was never boring to me, but I did feel like Gumshoe, Kay, "Nicole", and others felt a bit too watered down due to them being directly translated from Japanese rather than localized like every other game. I felt the same way towards the TGAAC fan translation vs the official release tbh.

While Horace is a better horse pun name, i can see why they went with Bronco. A Bronco is an "untamed horse", which does absolutely fit the character's personality. Also, its just kinda funny given Simeon's profession. The wild animal tamer and his childhood best friend: Untamed Horse 🐎 Perhaps there's some symbolic meaning there. Also, every time i hear Ford Bronco advertisements, i now start snickering.

if i had anything to say, the fan translation had some very good names, and the objections they dubbed were great, blaise fan objection was kinda better with how his character is, like von karma demonic objection, and justine curtney and sebestian voice clips were a gem...... also uncle's ray objection was smooth. gregory voice lines were made to be higher to be closer to edgeworth, but i felt the fan version was better, cause edgeworth sound nothing like it in the latest game where he have glasses.

6:40 "Yellow" is actually a pretty common Chinese surname (and so is "Wang") despite how it has even worse connotations in Chinese, and the original translation was probably a pun on it sounding the exact same as the Chinese word for "Emperor" (along with flowing off the tongue better). It's probably just the Japanese source consistency along with "Wang" literally meaning "King".

I disagree with your theory about Ethan and Nichole. Ethan means "strong and steady" in Hebrew, which might relate to his aim or fortress like stature ( which itself conveys a rook). Nichole alludes to the camera brand "Nikon", in ny opinion.

Wait, they didn't give the body double an actual name? That's really dissapointing and anoying. I mean, the body caused the inciting incident by seeking out Blaise/Exelcus and bribing him into masterminding the assassination on Huang/Wang. Had the body double not ordered the hit than Keyes/Saint would have still been orphanage ontill he was either adopted or continued being there ontill he became an adult, which would have resulted in Keyes/Saint becoming so mentaly scarred to the point that he would spent the rest of his life masterminding the downfall of those who wronged him. And if Keyes/Saint never went down that dark road than most of the cases would never come into exstince. Case 1 would never happen, because Huang/Wang would still be alive and thus would not employ private security, meaning neither Rook nor Knightly/Knight would be under the president's employ. It also means that Knightly/Knight would most likely never have had the motive nor means to murder Rook as their paths would likely never cross and even if they did, the lack of a 2nd amendement would have prevented Knightly/Knight from comming up with a plan where he would kill Rook and make it look like he died protecting whoever they were ordered to guard. Case 2 would never happen, because Knightly/Knight would've never been in jail awaiting trial. Roland/LeGard would've never become the warden of the prison, because she never helped Blaise/Exelcus due to her never being bribed into any of his schemes. Even if she did 1 day quit her job as orphanage directer and sucseesfully become a warden, she would never be manipulated into murdering anyone, as she commited any crimes, which means that she never wronged Keyes/Saint and that also means that none of the inmates would have any dirt on her to blackmail her with. Case 4 would never happen, because Jack/Al would not have died. Well maybe he would still die, because he was investigating blackmarket dealings that Blaise/Exelcus was conducting when he was chief prosecuter, however Jack/Al would've never died at the orphanage. And because Blaise/Exelcus never wronged Keyes/Saint, Keyes/Saint would've never manipulated the situation so Blaise/Exelcus and Jill/Rosie would have a run in with each other and Kay would've never been kidnaped in order to get Edgeworth involved. Well maybe the 2 would still cross paths and Blaise/Exelcus would've still gotten out on top, but because Edgeworth now has no reason to get involved, that results in the case remaining unsolved and baried, or the wrong person get's fingered for the crime and is found guilty. And case 5 would never happen, because - onlike the body double - the president has no reason murder Justine/Verity. This also means that Keyes/Saint would not have reason to scale the grand tower and not fall victim to being shot at, resulting in him being forced to kill his attacker and then to throw of TOD before then transporting the body to different location to pin the blame on someone else. And finaly, in the timeline where the body double never ordered the assassination, Blaise/Exelcus and Roland/LeGard would've never been under arrest and stand trial, because weren't exposed for murderers, Blaise/Exelcus would have never needed to help out Roland/LeGard and neither Keyes/Saint nor Blaise/Exelcus would've never had a reason to kidnap Justine/Verity's son to extort her. Case 3 is the exeption, because it happened way before the body double became dissalutioned and wanted to kill him to become the president. However, because case 2 never happened, Edgeworth and Ray/Eddie never meet and Ray/Eddie would've never invited Edgeworth to come to the museum to learn about Gregory's last case. Well, I'm pretty sure that case 3 would still be solved, but not by Edgeworth. Instead it would be Phoenix who solves the case as Sebastian/Eutace acused Larry of being the attacker and if Edgeworth wasn't there to defend Larry then Larry would been indicted.
