Pink Floyd is special to me, because they've always been in heavy rotation. I'm like Pete; my tastes have broadened over the decades. My daughters have listened to that sequence of notes (and all the following music) since they were in car seats as babies. They are now 9 and 11, and they LOVE that song. I always laugh when I hear all the girls (4th and 5th graders at their school) talk about music they like, and when my daughters say "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", the looks of confusion on all their faces are awesome.

I feel for you guys taking on a sacred cow like the Floyd. No matter what you say you're going to get lynched. So I'll just say cheers, I enjoyed your conversation about one of my favorite bands. Peace. The Floyd's lyrics are timeless and they experimented with music and when it worked it was great. Robbie krieger said Jim Morrison told him "when you write lyrics, write about universal themes that will remain the same a hundred years from now". That is what Pink Floyd did and they are still universal and always will be. IMHO

Great video, Pete! I enjoy listening to you and Mike discuss the songs (as you both also did on the top Alice Cooper tracks vid) because you guys break down your views with a decent analysis to give us some insight into the whys and whats behind your decisions on choice. To answer the question of why any of us like Pink Floyd, I've always liked that they sounded like no one else around . . . period. They were blues, they were prog, they were rock, they were psychedelic; they were original. Whether led by Syd or Roger or Dave, Floyd were a band that I could listen to when I was down and out, and always come out on the other side unscathed. Besides that, I got happily drunk to their tunes as well! In my top ten list, I cheated somewhat because I've got "Brain Damage/Eclipse" as one suite because, well, they were a continuous piece anyway. With that being said: 1 Dark Side of the Moon Suite (Brain Damage/Eclipse) 2 Shine On You Crazy Diamond (complete) 3 Wish You Were Here 4 The Narrow Way Pt 3 5 The Gunner's Dream 6 On the Turning Away 7 One of These Days 8 Us and Them 9 Learning to Fly 10 Lucifer Sam As always, thank you for your time and effort to bring us these videos (the same to you as well Mike!)

Pink Floyd is The band that connects Prog, Rock and Psychedelic Music and makes it enjoyable for the masses. At least if you look at the Albums from the seventies thats true. They are not as proggy and difficult to listen to as Rush or Genisis and are not as simple as the Stones or AC DC for example. I think that is the reason, why so many People love the Band. On top of that they write lyrics that can touch anyone and are timeless, as you already said in the Video. And Dave and Rick are able to write timeless melodies and Solos that are simple and easy to remember but great!!! Pink Floyd is the perfect mix of everything! My list: 1. Shine on (all parts) 2. Time 3. Pigs (three different ones) 4. Astronomy Domine 5. One of These days 6. Echoes 7. On the turning away 8. have a cigar 9. Comfortably numb 10. Money

Pink Floyd is my favourite band. I have seen Roger for the 30th anniversary of The Dark Side of the Moon tour and more recently his tour for The Wall. Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980-81 is my all-time favourite album. The reason Pink Floyd music resonates with me is, apart from the tunes, the lyrics touch me o0n a deep level. The feelings of isolation and mental illness are things I can relate to on a personal level.

Long-time Floyd fan here. I was into them before Dark Side. Ummagumma was my introduction to them and is still my favorite PF album, especially the live disk. Items from my top 10 that did not make either list of yours: Wots uh the Deal (Obscured by Clouds is an underrated album, so is the Final Cut.). Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast, from Atom Heart Mother. (love the sound effects and mellow instrumental interludes). The Narrow Way and A Saucerful of Secrets, from Ummagumma. (Peak Psychedelia). Speaking of Animals, saw them live in the summer of 75, doing the early versions of Sheep and Dogs, then titled Raving and Drooling, and Gotta Be Crazy. Excellent! better than what showed up later on the Animals album. a lot heavier.

Firstly, I love every era of Pink Floyd but I'm a big fan of the Syd Barret era and early era. I would have mentioned stuff like "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" and "Take up Thy Stethoscope and Walk" and their singles like "See Emily Play" and "Arnold Layne" I listen to a lot of different genres and styles of music, so it's hard for me to pinpoint what exactly makes me like a band. The characteristic that I look for the most is originality, I like bands that do different things and have their own distinct sounds, something Floyd definitely does. I like a lot of other bands that are just different and don't sound like anyone else, some of my favorites being Primus, Supertramp, Cream, etc. There are a lot of bands that may be good musicians and maybe even good songwriters, but if they're just rehashing something old, what's the point?

As a Pink Floyd fanatic and a lover of Gilmour's emotional soaring guitar,Nick Mason's complicated fills, and mostly,he had to put up with chord changes, sudden tempo highs and lows and did it effortlessly,Rick Wright, had the pleasure of meeting Rick at a rock mag launch in London, and what an intelligent, warm old fashioned English gentleman he was too,i cannot disagree with either list and i could easily add another 20 authentic masterpieces, but thats Floyd, the thinking mans band. Live performances (the obvious Pulse and Pompeii concerts to the fore) would feature heavily in any list of mine.I have a great quality bootleg from an early gig in holland and would include Set The Controls from that show. So much material, what a band,STILL educating me all these years later.

Left field choice to add to the mix. "Careful with that Axe, Eugene", live in Brighton version. A slow, spooky buildup, Roger is squealing the sound of an axe slicing through the air, meanwhile slumping out a sinuous bass line, all the while the psychopath is sliding up the darkened path, then a monumental upchange when Nick smashes on the drums and the lights come on, then Dave slices into one of his most vicious, brutal shreds for a few minutes. Monumental.

For Shine on live Dick Parry had two saxophones on him, when he finished the first part he swung the baritone sax behind him and the tenor sax in front and started wailing. You can see it on the Pulse live DVD

Fantastic and entertaining discussion! :) Here is my Top 10 list for the time being: 1. Comfortably Numb (The Wall) 2. Time (Dark Side of the Moon) 3. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Wish You Were Here) 4. Brain Damage/Eclipse (Dark Side of the Moon) 5. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun (Saucerful of Secrets) 6. Fearless (Meddle) 7. Astronomy Domine (Piper at the Gates of Dawn) 8. Free Four (Obscured by Clouds) 9. The Nile Song (More) 10. Pigs [The Different Ones] (Animals) "Is There Anybody Out There?" and "Nobody Home" from The Wall should be on my top 10, but I was trying to be inclusive of many of their albums. "Biding My Time" from Relics could also be on my top ten, depending on the day. A forgotten tune and an underrated tune. Nick Mason pulls off Bonham-like drums on it, magnificent! "If" from Atom Heart Mother is also one that could easily be on my ever-changing top ten! "Embryo" from the "Works" compilation is also great! So many honorable mentions, hard to know where to begin! ;)

One of the live DVD sets, I don't remember which one, but Dick Parry had 2 saxes on while doing Money. Both with straps on them. One was slung across his back and he played one, then swung that one behind his back and pulled out the other.

Great catch, although I think you meant Shine On, not Money. I'm not positive, but I think Money was played using one sax.....alto I think.

I can't believe I'm gonna be 47 in a few days and I just bought my first copy of Dark Side a few days ago. And I have had tens of thousands of LPs , CDs and cassettes pass through my hands. I always regarded it as "stoner rock". Oh my what an experience! I suppose everybody knows what they were doing the first time they sat through that album in it's entirety.

To answer your question of why is Pink Floyd so important and why do they continue to mean so much to so many people - I think The Wall is actually the best example why. It's a concept album where the central character (some of it based on Waters' life experiences) has clearly done too much compartmentalizing, particularly of issues and tragedies from his childhood, and in spite of all the fame, money and women he has available it means nothing compared to the trauma he's been suppressing and that is taking its toll. The Wall is such a courageous record. Not too many other musicians would put so much effort into depicting "some mad bugger's wall". But The Wall worked, because it was original, thought-provoking and had resonance. Fans appreciated the brutal honesty and quirkiness of everything going on in the concept. If you lost a parent at a young age or early in life as I did, this record can be very profound and challenging as you are absorbing it. Once I reached adulthood and was at an age where Pink Floyd started to click with me (hearing Dogs in college was the initial catalyst), I never needed any drugs to get into Pink Floyd's music. The previous reservations I had about Pink Floyd being too slow-paced eventually fell by the wayside. The storytelling aspect Mike talks about in the video starts to matter more. My soul was aching and my mind was open, so Pink Floyd hit me right in the heart.

Greetings from this old dinosaur from the UK, was this a top ten waters era Floyd, or a genuine top ten? I thought for a minute you were not going to include any from the later albums, glad you put some in the honourable mentions. I was fortunate to see the Floyd about six times or so, they are probably one of my favourite bands, in the top 10 anyway. I love Mike's intro to the topic, I wish I could be there with you having a pint and discussing it, it's a long way to go, if I win the lottery I shall seek out The Brewery. As for the top ten tracks? there is just too many, it would have to be a top twenty or more, but Dogs is my favourite too. An honourable mention Mike, what about Summer of '68 by Richard Wright from Atom Heart Mother, got a kinda swinging sixties London feel to it. Great job anyway guys.

I like Pink Floyd because, to me, they've always been in a class of their own. Like even with their early psychedelic stuff, it still didn't sound like anything anyone else was putting out at the time, or at least not the more famous ones - like maybe some other obscure band out there did similar stuff, but since they never made it as big as Floyd, we'll never remember them. As for the rest of their stuff, what can it even be classified as? Prog, it doesn't sound like any of the other prog bands at the time. I guess maybe because they did concept albums and rock operas maybe? I've also heard it called space rock, but again, who else was doing it so well? So I say it should be called Pink Floyd rock.

Why I love Pink Floyd? They bring something very unique. I am a bit younger so I had no clue who or what Pink Floyd was (Which one is Pink?). When I started to discover them I thought they were gonna be like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC or Alice Cooper. But they are very low-key, don't always have chorus, have many long songs.. I didn't get it. This is one of the best bands of all time I thought? Sounds like a weird undergrund band with like hundred fans are their shows. But I kept on listening. Started to enjoy a song here or there. While many seem do disregard the later day Pink Floyd without Roger Waters I found plenty songs in those albums more easily accessable than their late 60's and 70's music. Today I enjoy much of their body of work. Now I think Pink Floyds music offers something other bands doesn't. You could think a band like Genesis would offer something similar (as great as they were/are) but they sort of don't to me. Pink Floyd is often the band I lean against when not much else music seems to work. I think Pink Floyd touches some basic feeling in many of us that others seem to miss or doesn't even know exists.
