You know that he’s a true fan for ranking Ummagumma higher than the wall lol
@tepidtooth85393 жыл бұрын
How does that make him a true fan? Placing it higher on his list? I think knowing it exists shows he’s a big fan, but ranking it higher doesn’t make him a true fan. I can tell you that I own all of Pink Floyd’s studio releases except the Endless River and The Wall and Dark Side Of The Moon are definitely my favorites. I don’t care if it’s cliched, I absolutely love them. But you know after that I’d probably put Division Bell, Atom Heart Mother and (cliched again) Wish You Were Here.
@d-ro32663 жыл бұрын
@@tepidtooth8539 What I’m trying to say is that 99% of people in this world when when you ask what their favorite Floyd song is, they’d most likely say Another brick, comfortably numb, wish you were here, learning to fly, time, money etc. But if you go a little deeper, if they actually listen to the band, they might say something like astronomy domine, echoes, wots... uh the deal etc. Most people really overlook Ummagumma, as it is kind of a mess and there isn’t much meaning in it(despite it’s importance in the long run), so people who aren’t really into Pink Floyd won’t see anything good in it, and a lot of Floyd fans just think that it is kind of a meme. Let’s face it, the wall is a masterpiece, dsotm is a masterpiece, animals is a masterpiece, wish you were here is a masterpiece, meddle is a masterpiece, but Ummagumma is hard to call a masterpiece for most people. What I’m trying to say is that he is truly a fan because he loves the sounds that the band produced in their struggling post Barrett era, when he could just hop on the bandwagon of their late 70s hits. Me personally, I love their early stuff, and I think that Barrett was one of the most underrated musicians of the British Invasion and all music as a whole, and I think that their psychedelic sounds were phenomenal, but most people will say that their early stuff was nowhere near their late stuff. Why, because they aren’t fans of all their music; just a time period of their music. The guy in this videos favorite album was animals, but not far below it was Ummagumma and piper before the wall because he is a true fan of the band as a whole: psychedelic 60s all the way to classic rock 70s. I hope this answered... and Srry for the long response.

I think "The Wall" is where Waters was admitting his fragility as a human being to grasp the darker parts of life in a very special and truthful, dare I say himble way. I love "The Wall" "Animals" is only topped in records all time by "Moving Pictures" and "Close to the Edge". Yeah I absolutely empathize with Waters losing his father during WWII when he was a baby and appreciate how that has impacted who he is being anti-war and all. I cant say i agree with just dismissing albums like The Wall or The Final Cut as Rogers therapy sessions. He uses themes of his fathers death in the same way he does with the Thatcher administration, the Cold War and the buildup to the Falklands War. Dismissing those later Waters albums as him just winging about his fathers death just disregards any value that they have.

It is genius but for some reason I now find it depressing. Maybe it’s my age. Whereas Dark Side isn’t a tough listen emotionally because it takes me to a better frame of mind by the end. I find jazz albums often like this. Yes I know Miles Davis’s middle albums like Sketches of Spain are genius but wow do they bring me down.

I agree with Pete's assessment. I put The Wall as a double album that would have been better as a single album such as Fleetwood Mac's Tusk and Genesis "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway". All of them would have been masterpieces if someone invited an editor inside the studio to boil the tunes down into genius. Additionally, it was THE WALL album that convinced Roger Waters that he was Pink Floyd. It got to his head and the band was never the same.

Johnny Rotten use to wear an anti Pink Floyd t shirt and that's a fact . That shirt got him noticed for the first time . I love Pink Floyd , but labeling them Punk in any way is just wrong . The Wall is a masterpiece that also happened to have some huge hit songs on it. I don't feel that that diminishes it as an artistic endeavour. Animals and Dark Side and others are also incredible, but I personally think that Floyd peaked with The Wall. Gilmour's later Floyd work is great but lacks the edge and darkness of the Waters era. I love Momentary Lapse and some Division Bell stuff but it isn't as weighty.

Pete your videos are amazing. Like you a Northeast rocker. I am Autistic and I enjoy your videos. You are a real originator and there are imitators out there but no one tops you as rock music collector. I nowadays am upgrading much of what I have to vinyl. Pink Floyd are my favorite band and the following is my Best to Worst : 1) Wish You Were Here (their masterpiece, even David Gilmour and Rick Wright agree) 2) The Division Bell (I was a senior when that album came out and skipped my prom to see that tour and was the best album IMHO since Wish You Were Here) 3) Meddle (One of These Days, A Pillow of Winds, Fearless and Echoes alone) 4) The Dark Side of the Moon (I love but radio did burn it out and I tend to listen to live versions of songs more now thanks to Immersion box and PULSE) 5) Atom Heart Mother (EPIC) 6) Obscured by Clouds (underrated) 7) A Saucerful of Secrets (classic) 8) The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (Syd ruled) 9) The Endless River (another album I play top to bottom) 10) The Wall (I listen to live 1980-81 album more than studio nowadays) 11) Animals (I play either Oakland or Vienna or Boston ROIOs for Animals fix as the songs were more Floyd like live than the studio album and also it was the start of the Roger Waters Power Trip and Rick Wright was underused on album and Rick didn't like the album and Gilmour called it good but not a creative high point) 12) A Momentary Lapse of Reason (original 1987 mix is great but the 2019 updated and remixed is superb and has Nick Mason playing all drums and Rick Wright's keyboards added in via concert recordings into the new updated versions) 13) Ummagumma (I enjoy all bar bits of Grand Viziers Garden Party which got monotonous) 14) More (I enjoy entire thing but some of Quicksilver did drag on) 15) The Final Cut (musically great but the lyrics and Roger Waters' fixation on my dad died, I hate war jumped the shark here) The Zabriskie Point album had the two worst Pink Floyd tracks (Heart Beat Pig Meat and Come In Number 51, noises and a pointless remake of Careful With That Axe) Live albums best to worse : 1) PULSE 2) Live at Pompeii (which was released on the 1972 Obfuscation set) 3) Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980-81 4) Delicate Sound of Thunder (expanded version will be out November 20) 5) Ummagumma (live disc)

I absolutely love “The Final Cut”. If that is a Roger Waters solo record, then “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” is a David Gilmour solo record, and that one had to be remixed to add Richard Wright in and get Nick Mason to record real drums and overall remove the 80s sound of it. I’ll take “The Final Cut” over it, any day.
@wanderer852955 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I mean damn first of all who (that is a true floyd fan) can even begin to put their albums in a best to worst or worst to beat list as each album is in and of its own a master work of art. That said if you are going to attempt to rate them you should at least make sub lists 1) pink floyd with Barret 2) pink floyd ( Roger , Rick, Nick, Dave ) 3.) Pink floyd ( without waters) 4.) Roger waters (without floyd ) // and ah anyone want to try and tell me that the pros and cons of hitchhiking isn't a freaking masterpiece?...... then add amused to death and KAOS . And all three of them are every bit as good maybe better than momentary lapse of reason and i would say better than the division bell ( haven't decided about endless river yet to be honest so I will not make any comments on it at all here now) so yeah my top three are 1) meddle, dsotm, wywh, animals , atom heart mother, ummagumma, obscured, more, the wall , final cut 1) sub. a// a nice pair ( saucers & pipers) 2) pros and cons, KAOS, Amused to Death 3.) Momentary lapse of reason & division bell
@antalantal23665 жыл бұрын
Absoluetely once more, Gustavo. The "final cut" (a Waters' solo album with a great input by Kamen) is much much better than a "momentary lapse of reason" (a Gilmour's solo album) that sounds so freaking outdated to my ears

Anthony Stargaryen you can’t possibly be taken seriously with a comment like “zero redeeming qualities”. Even if you prefer Gilmour’s solo work over Waters’, you have to appreciate the guitar solo on “The Fletcher Memorial Home”, “Your Possible Pasts”, “The Final Cut” and “Not Now John” (which even features David’s vocals, and the women backup singers that clearly David loved enough to keep using afterwards when he wrote and recorded music without Roger.)

They kinda keep it to a dozen or so main albums when they promote them, but if you add up every album starting with the acetate, lump the early singles into an album, and include all the film projects, + the 3 post-waters albums + live albums, all total they recorded 25 albums worth of music: 1, Acetate Demo. 2, Tonight Lets All Make Love in London. 3, The Early Singles. 4, Piper. 5, The Latham Session. 6, The Committee. 7, Saucerful. 8, Moonhead-BBC Lunar Landing (live but epic & totally unique). 9, More. 10, Ummagumma. 11, Zabriski Point. 12, Atom Heart Mother. 13, Meddle. 14, The Vallee. 15, Dark Side. 16, Household Objects (aborted). 17, Wish You Were Here. 18, Animals. 19, The Wall. 20, Final Cut. 21, Momentary Lapse. 22, Delicate Thunder. 23, Division Bell. 24, Pulse. 25, Endless River And that's not including Gilmour & Wrights 1977 material that Waters ignored to make Animals. ...& which they each just spun off as their own very nice 1978 solo albums. When you imagine touring 2 or 3 shows a day between 65-67, and then squeezing in albums between gigs (15 of them in the 5 years between 67 and 72) that workload starts to make sense of how proficient and refined their style seemed to get so quickly, and also makes some sense how it scorched through Syds and then Waters states of mind. Those guys were serious workaholics and it just burned them all out one after another. I mean even a decade later Gilmour went to High Court in london to get the rights to the name, just to quick repurpose his next solo album into Momentary Lapse, & bust out a massive tour, immediately crank out Division Bell, tour it, and that was it. Every interview after that point is him just going, "It might be nice to just relax for a change, maybe play some nice old tunes in a little club somewhere and not have it consume our entire lives."

Good evening Pete,. That's a tough call to make, but on my end of things I fancy the Syd Barrett era. Not to say that the rest is bad, because it most definitely is not. Apples and oranges" And even the stuff directly after Piper's such as "paintbox" , " saucerful of secrets" and More.(soundtrack) I definitely dig Rick Wright as well.. @@lamnuck Here's the deal- I could care less how many people like different albums from mine, list them in a different order, etc.. What I have a problem is, as I state on all these videos that these are the albums (or songs) that I like best, and that you the viewer might like different ones, and that's cool, and it would be good to read what you prefer. Too many people take the choices I list as personal attacks on them or the bands, and never even list which ones they like. Calling me names, or any other viewer on this channel for that matter, for our personal choices, takes thing a little too far in my opinion. The lyrics are very dark, sure. But surely not his best, that would be Dark Side or Wish you were here. And also, the fact that he had sole lead vocals on that album worsens it very much. The reason why their albums worked up until Animals is the diversity in vocals. Gilmore and Wright had angelical voices. But Waters dismissed them. He even fired Wright. Final Cut is the peak of Waters' ego, if he wasn't so eccentric maybe he could work as a team with his bandmates

I would say that Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, and Animals are the real Pink Floyd trilogy. Animals was the last one i heard of theirs and it blew me away.

Totally agree! Animals is my favorite! Love your top three. Animals has such a wonderful way of getting really low key atmosphere music mixed with a crescendo in some of the most amazing David's guitar solos ever. So creative. And a great album in the face of the punk bands admonishing the prog bands for being too intricate and not enough raw power. Thanks for the vid.

I would rank the 70s albums like this: 1. Animals (this is just too good. Truly their magnum opus. Not only are the lyrics absolutely genius, but the music is as amazing as ever. Dogs is probably their best song, very complex with multiple sections. Pigs and Sheep are awesome as well. 10/10) 2. Wish You Were Here (probably Pink Floyd’s most emotional album. Both halves of Crazy Diamond are beautiful and atmospheric. Welcome to the machine is dark and mysterious, Have a Cigar is a great rocker, and the title track is a heartbreaking ballad. 10/10) 3. The Dark Side of the Moon (the first album I ever listened to by Pink Floyd, and also the album that opened up the world of progressive rock for me. This album has classics such as Time, Great Gig in the Sky, Money, and the four track medley at the end. Doesn’t get much better than that!! 10/10) 4. The Wall (the concept behind this album is so genius. The story truly feels like a journey throughout the life of Pink. You can really feel his pain. And there’s so much symbolism in this album. Only problem is that it is no where near as musically advanced as the albums above it. None of the songs are bad, in fact a lot of them are really good, but they’re nothing compared to Dogs, Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Time. 9/10) 5. Meddle (definitely the best album of the “Pre-Dark Side Era.” One of These Days is a fantastic instrumental opener. The rest of side one is pretty great too, with the folk rocker “Fearless” being the highlight. And side two, which is taken up entirely by “Echoes” is a mindblowing psychedelic experience. This album might not fit together as well as the albums above it, but it’s still a great experience all around. 8/10) 6. Atom Heart Mother (their first album of the 70s and the start of a new era for them. They had reinvented themselves with a new sound, and although this album displays that sound in its primitive form, it is still very good. Much like Echoes, the title track suite on this album is weird and trippy but very cool if you’re in the right mood. If and Fat Old Sun are two lovely acoustic tunes, but the highlight on this album is Summer ‘68, a fun pop rock song. 8/10) 7. Obscured By Clouds (nothing special, but it does contain some pretty great songs, such as Burning Bridges, Stay, Wot’s Uh The Deal (my personal favorite) and some other good psychedelic folk rock tracks. 7/10) As for Pink Floyd’s none-70s albums, I have tried listening to Piper at the Gates of Dawn and really didn’t enjoy it that much. I don’t really have interest in listening to Pink Floyd’s other albums tbh, but those 70s ones are really good and enough to make Pink Floyd one of my favorite bands ever.

The song "the Gold is in the..." from Obscured by Clouds has one of the best Gilmour guitar solos

Pa-leez. That song is an embarrassing cock rock cliche on which Gilmour sounds like a drunken Stephen Stills.

"It's too late to lose the weight you use to need to throw around so have a good drown as you go down all alone dragged down by the stone" - One of my favorite lyrics ever. I know this isn't popular to say but I like Gilmour's guitar solo in Dogs more than the one in Comfortably Numb.

Your review made me check out Meddle, which I'd never heard even though I own most of their 70's albums. Loved it. Top 3 Floyd for me. Many thanks.

For me I have to agree Animals is the best Floyd album, I’m really not one for political statements in albums but this shows the social and political state of Britain in the mid 70,s, absolute classic. Keep up the good work Pete 👍💪
