In this video, we look at the Valheim biomes and rank them from worst to best in my opinion.
If you disagree with my opinions, please feel free to leave a comment explaining why. I'm always open to differing opinions.
P.s to anyone commenting about the poison resistance mead being great. You are wrong. Kinda. It is somewhat effective but it doesn't completely negate the poison debuff. That is my problem with it.

You should always have the RESTED buff up when away from base especially in the swamp. It gives you something like 100% stamina regen! I believe it’s designed this way to give you an incentive and reason to build a “comfy” house. Cool game design if you asks me.

Since prairies is so close to plaines, imagine my reaction when I sailed off to what I thought was a meadow in order not to blindly go for the first time into a swamp, just to get absolutely destroyed by a mosquito. I discovered the other day that TICKS CAN COME THROUGH THE PORTAL WITH YOU. My friends and I were helping a mate get her stuff back from her body in the Mistlands. We got overrun by enemies so she returned to our base through a portal as she was basically defenceless. The blood-curdling screams I heard when the tick on her head detached itself and began chasing her around the base. I didn't believe her at first as no enemy had come through a portal before, but sure enough there was tick crawling over our beds.

Couple tips: In the swamp you can use the hoe to level the ground, this create easily walkable paths you can use to travel through the biome and makes it much more manageable. In the mountains, hop on top of the head of stone golems and then hit them with your pickaxe to quickly subdue them. Now after having played the mistlands update a bunch, I would say 1) Mistlands 2) Plains 3) Mountains. Although the mistlands don't become fun until you get the feather cape.

I honestly like the addition of the abomination, in my latest playthrough I build a swamp base and it made the swamp much more enjoyable, plus I already know all of the enemies so the combat wasn’t too bad, after re-playing the games a couple times the swamp becomes more enjoyable. Also it’s a safe biome so you won’t die at base. The music, mobs, scenery and the boss are really great 😊. But it’s not a good biome to explore, the mountains are. pros of the mistlands: -only biome with friendly (until attacked) mobs that actually fight other creatures of their biome -fancy-ass rocks and grass, added to the ruins it can be a sigh to behold. More than any biome, it tells a story of ancient wars against long-dead giants and a dvergr empire that fell due to the bugs, with only pockets of survivors remaining. -Only biome to my knowledge that sports metal from earlier biomes; you wont need to keep hauling iron there. -The local metal equivalent, refined eitr, can be teleported freely. -Unlocks access to magic staves and food allowing you to use said magic, effectively creating a subclass with completely different gear Cons: -The friggin mist. The biome is real fancy as I said, too bad the game will hide the vast majority of it from you, with you sometimes not even being able to see past the front of your character if the mist-dispelling wisp lags behind! That thing NEEDS a bigger radius, or areas of the mistlands without mist need to be more common. -the terrain is REALLy Rough to navigate, eating your stamina like a fat man eats candy. Made worse by the above issue making it real easy to take fall damage just because you couldnt see you were going towards a cliff

Mistlands is pretty unique. I think traversing the jagged terrain with the fog is one of the more annoying things to get used to initially, especially when you first start fighting insects and Gjalls. I would definitely craft and upgrade a black metal Ategir before going hard into Mistlands, the aoe spin attack is great for killing ticks. I ended up dropping probably hundreds of wisp torches all throughout the island just to mark my paths before I got done. Progression is initially pretty slow since you need the new cores to build the new crafting stations and it can be really hard to find the dungeons (the bile bombs work great inside here). Once you finally get a mistland base up with the new food and some of the new weapons and magic stuff it gets a lot more manageable. The final Queen boss is definitely a big step up in difficulty compared to the plains boss. Using melee and parrying does not work out too good with her knockbacks and she gives you little time to get damage in, you need to rely on dodge rolling mainly and use a 2her for more damage. It's definitely easier to just use ranged fire magic and kite her around instead. This is the first boss where I felt like I needed to spend a decent amount of time training weapon skills in order to beat the boss.

Nice video! Glad you're getting a little algorithm blessing with it. But. It's very clear you lack experience and knowledge. Which isn't bad, everyone starts from somewhere but it's not something you'd expect from someone making a tirt list out of the biomes! For example being in the mistlands with iron gear or in the swap with no mead/potions and plain cooked food instead of a combination of meals with a stamina focus was just preparing for failure. (also you mention the plains being the last biome bit mistlands at the moment comes after it, you had them out of order in progression) Though this does open up the path for you to someday revisit this with more experience or when more updates come out. Ps. I'm greek and appreciate all you had to say, I love the plains too. ps ps. I also don't fucking get why swamps rain 24/7, with mountains you could have fires everywhere to counter the cold, in mistlands torches to get rid of the mist But in the swamp you just are wet and can't do anything about it. It depends what you re looking for. Me I prefer biomes with more interactions and lifes inside and if biome seems like what it deserves by his name. 7- Ocean : it's not made yet by dev. It's really annoying. 6- Meadows : it's beautiful but to calm. Nothing to do in there. Mobs are shit and not enough species in there. But good to build a house. 5- Plains : this biome is just nonsense. It's sight of land is poor. It' s only yellow with big stones. And mob in there are nonsense. Why gobelins live in plains? Why mosquitos in plains? Why the boss is a giant skeleton? Everything in this biome is the less thinking. 4- Mistlands : I don't understand why we can't see nothing in a game. We can't watch land and it's too difficult to move inside. I don't understand meaning of insects in this biome but I loved dvergers people. And story about giants is cool but not enough explained. 3- Mountain : this biome is really beautiful and mobs have good interactions. It's just a little bit poor looking. But moder is too good! 2- Swamp : it's exactly what look like a swamp. It's nasty and mobs inside are really cool and good thinking. A lot of interactions inside. Love it! 1- Black forest : best looking biome. A fairy biome I love. Everything is good thinking. Mobs are really cool and boss too. I love everything in there. I don't play a game to looking for easy way to play it but to travel inside and watch beauty of creation.

Having a shield is the best choice to 1v1 a strong oponent like a goblin or troll, you 1-2 parry and attack as they are staggered till they die(not the berserker tho). You can parry range attacks, such as arrows shot from draugrs and skeletons. Deathsquitos are always scary if they suprise you, but shooting them from a bow when they are charging at you straight on is easy. Plains boss is really cool, idk about Mistlands, I'm playing other games as well and I started my Valheim playthrough from the beggining when the updated dropped. As other comments said, you missed out on a cape: cool look, more armor and frozen debug nagating tool in one. And rested buff which you get more of the more comfortable your home is(decorations, good beds, good fireplaces, I think stone buildings), is a must. And you, as me and my friends on our first playthrough didn't use the Stagbreaker. You can use it in crypts to fight off hordes of skeletons. You can also tame animals, and I think wolfs can assist you in fights.

I don't think it lacks anything: a dungeon type, huge building upgrade, new weapon type (2h axe), the "oh shit a troll" enemy - abomination, a light armor, like 4 types of small enemies, and I think it all works together very well to create the dank "I won't go there unless I must" place that swamps are intended to be

I love the plains. I spent most of the game stubbornly using the bow as my primary weapon. When I got to the plains, my skill was so high I took out whole villages of Fulings with just arrows. Yes arrows. Mostly, you snipe to aggro (or just one shot) a fuling. Hit him and he’s staggered and quickly finish him off with another arrow. Archers dominate the plains.

I'd be very interested in seeing the code for the sailing wind mechanics. I'm close to 1k hours in this game and around the 500 hour mark i started to notice that, even though head wind only represents 20% of your wind circle, it seemed that 50 to 60% of the time any wind change would result in a change to head wind. There'd be times you're sailing on the leeway, kind of right on the boundary of wind and no wind, and the wind would adjust like 5 degrees to force you to tack. Eventually i found this frustrating and getting in the way of fun, so at about the 800 hr i installed a permanent Moder power mod, and it made me realise the wind mini-game is just designed to piss you off (to make sailing seem like it's hard). I just want to get from A to B with minimum fuss thank you very much.

I’ll never forget the first time my buddy and I encountered a troll. We had just finished setting up our first base in the black forest and “fortifying” it against greydwarf attacks so we thought we were pretty dug in. We were in the base cooking stuff, sorting items, repairing gear, …etc then the ground started shaking. We weren’t sure what was going on, and the next thing we knew a tree trunk bashed down one of the walls of our “fortified” structure, and that giant blue boy was staring down at us. Looking up at that guy and scrambling for weapons was one of the most immersive events I’ve ever experienced while playing a video game. Looking back with a better understanding of Valheim’s mechanics, it seems kinda silly. Of course a hostile mobs can destroy structures and an agroed troll would obviously destroy the wall to get to us, but before that moment, we had know idea something like that could happen, and it was the last thing we expected from a game we’d thought was just a Minecraft clone with Vikings.

Decent editing, quality and humor. For your first real gaming video (peeked the channel before subbing) this was well done. You earned an instant sub. Edit: Made the comment before finishing the video. When you got the 'its the wrong shade of blue' I laughed my ass off. Partially because I made a similar joke to my sister tonight when we started out first Minecraft Realm. I stated I found the ocean, which at the time, had been a bitch to find and was about 600-700 blocks away from spawn, and through forest. She asked "Was it everything you wanted it to be?" I said, "Nah, the shade of blue just doesn't match my armor. Its just not fashionable." She laughed and said "What shade then?" I said "Cyan, it matches my eyes." Then it devolved into some good ol stupidity about colors and shades for a bit. Either way, great timing to hit me with that joke. If that hadnt happened tonight, I wouldnt be rambling about it. Awesome coincidence.

A few tricks for the swamp: Use your hoe to raise water levels and run with it. Gives you nice area to work around, and also makes escape easier. Wraiths are easily parried and killed, same with Abomination. Allthough Abo can be tricky at start. But place yourself on it's right forefoot and you are kinda save. The the attack with the left foot and middle dont hit you there and you block/parry the right foot attack. Also, rested Buff is your friend. Farming in crypts is easy if you a. place a portal on top of the crypt, so it's save and b. place a fire in the entrance of the crypt. This way you get rid of the wet buff fast and get a rested bonus refresh. The hardest thing about first time swamp are the Draugrs using bows. Those suckers can bring you down hard. You don't go into swamp without poison resistance potions which are easily made from stuff you get in the BF. Then Blogs and Oozers are a piece of cake.

For the record, I think its great that different people can have different opinions and experiences playing games. I wouldn't want to live in a world where all games were designed to appeal equally to all people. So, this isn't meant as an attack or anything. That being said, I disagree with you pretty strongly about the swamp, which I personally think is the best biome in terms of how fully realized and well-developed it is as a concept. To be clear here, when I say "best" I don't mean "most fun place to just hang out and vibe". I think the swamp is meant to be challenging and ramp up the difficulty of the game, after the black forest and meadows which are both very safe biomes, and the swamp does that job well. The swamp has several challenges, and the game gives you ways to overcome all of them. The process of learning how to use the tools and systems of the game to overcome these challenges is good gameplay, which makes the swamp a good biome. There are a few specific things I would point to in your gameplay footage out that might be worth taking a look at to improve your experience in the swamp: 1) You seem to have noticed that the swamp eats your stamina. The way to combat this is to use the tools the game gives you to manipulate the terrain. You can use the hoe to flatten paths through the swamp. Mark the path on your map with a series of dots. By having a path, you will no longer need to jump in order to maneuver in the swamp, and you will not get stuck walking through deep water. Jumping is the real enemy in this game, it consumes a lot of stamina, whereas sprinting is pretty efficient by comparison. By sprinting on flat ground, you are faster than all the enemies in the swamp. Keep eikthyr buff equipped and you can sprint through the swamp really fast to navigate or escape, and you can also use a cart very effectively to move iron around. Build portals on your road for easy access and quick escape. This is a great example of why I personally think metals should not be able to be teleported. Solving the problem of getting iron out of the swamp requires applying the systems and tools of the game to solve the challenge, which creates gameplay. If you could just teleport the iron out, it would make the game simpler, easier, and faster to play through, and I think that would be a bad thing, because I think playing the game is fun. 2) Craft tasty mead as soon as you can, and always keep some handy. Tasty mead is super powerful because it gives you a big boost to stamina regeneration and there's no cooldown on how frequently you can use it. If you find yourself in a tight spot, you can burn through a few tasty meads and basically double the amount of stamina available to you in that fight, which is well worth it to prevent a death. This is really useful in the swamp if you're struggling for stamina. 3) You should really be using a stagbreaker in the swamp. Because stagbreaker (and other sledges) do an AOE burst of damage and knockback, their range is better than other melee weapons, and the knockback means you can keep slower enemies ranged out and almost stun-locked. You can easily kill blobs with a stagbreaker with essentially 0% chance of them hitting you if you just practice a little. It trivializes them as enemies. Also great for clearing gangs of skeletons, or just in general for engaging large groups of enemies, and also great in crypts since you can hit enemies through walls or around corners with the AOE. 4) Just don't go into the swamp at night early on, and you won't see wraiths, since they always spawn at night. At night you're also more likely to encounter larger groups of enemies and also more difficult enemies in general. Across all biomes, you should avoid going out at night when possible (if you're trying to avoid dying) until you have mastered that biome and have started getting resources from the next biome after it. At a certain point in the game once you've mastered the mountains, you'll actually want to frequently go into the swamps at night because wraiths drop chains and those become pretty useful later for several things. Wraiths are really easy to kill with silver weapons because they deal spirit damage to undead. 5) I noticed you were fighting bonemass without a shield, and while eating cooked boar meat, cooked deer meat, and a queen's jam (early game food). So, while I will concede that bonemass is a harder boss than the elder or eikthyr, I really think that if you just take the time to prepare for the fight, bonemass is super simple. At this point in the game you should be able to craft and upgrade the iron shield, which will block bonemass perfectly well and is a great all-around shield to use in the swamps and mountains. You should also be able to hunt and kill serpents quite easily using your longship, a finewood bow, and poison arrows, and you should be able to farm turnips. This means your food for a boss fight should look more like serpent stew, sausages, and turnip soup. You can also craft the root armor, which is very good early game armor and the helmet gives you permanent poison resistance. If you do all of these things, there is no trick to fighting bonemass, you just....fight it. Keep your shield up and block him when he attacks, no need to take a risk by parrying. Then, after he attacks, hit him once or twice. Rinse and repeat. Craft some healing mead for if you make a mistake. If you get into trouble, just jump on top of his boss altar, it is indestructible and he can't hit you up there. Before the fight, you can raise ground to make a small footstep at the back of the altar if your jump skill isn't high enough to get up there in a single jump, but with high jump skill you can just jump right on top and be invincible. If mobs accumulate during the fight, it will usually be skeletons and blobs, clear them with a few quick hits from stagbreaker. Bonemass exists, IMO, to punish people for rushing through biome progression. Hard to fight when unprepared, but trivial to fight when fully prepared.

It adds another skill you can level, it increases run speed, attack speed, walk speed and jump force, so basically Haste. It makes Mistlands the best biome for me BY FAR, because with that + Featherfall you can just leap from peak to peak, completely exploring from the sky as if you were the Hulk or something. I actually found the pre-update Mistlands more eerie. The landscape was definitely more eerie, it was blackened and had giant spider webs everywhere and the mist was very unsettling, but you could see somewhat. What makes the new Mistlands scary are just the creatures and sounds, the land its self just looks like something out of Lord of the Rings, it looks great, but it's not eerie on it's own. Without the mist, it would look like black forest with marble spires, nothing special. What's scary is the possibility of falling into the ocean via spire hopping. That would be terrifying because it's a death sentence and it would be hard to recover in water that isn't accessible by boat in the Mistlands.

I used to think that the Swamp was the worst biome... and maybe it still is. But the Mistlands fucking suck. You can't see shit without having your floating mist ball equipped (which replaces the belt that allows you to have more carry weight). You are constantly climbing up steep rocks, draining stamina endlessly hoping to figure out what the hell is going on and where you're going, just to accidentally end up jumping off the sheer side of a large rock and killing yourself or damn near. The only saving grace is a new cape that completely negates fall damage (but you have to get the resources in the Mistlands to craft it, first). Mistlands is probably the new worst biome and it's a shame because fans waited almost 2 years for it.

Bonemass is pretty easy to beat if you use some strategy. First, make some good amount of frost arrows. Then, build a tower close to it's spawn point. If you build it on top of a cript it will be better, as the skeletons won't be able to destroy the base. Around the tower, elevate some of the terrain so that skeletons will not be likely to enter the perimeter and bonemass won't destroy your tower either. And that's it. Climb the tower and shoot it from above with your frost arrows. It was actually very, very easy to beat this boss with this.

fun fact the plains arent the final biome, mistlkands is the furthest biome thats part of the progression currently aka either the farnorth and ashlands will most likely be the final biome. you havent defeated yagluth and yet you explore the mistlands? his drop is a wisp that dispels mist around you, think of the wisp in a bottle from terraria with the added benifit of clearing mist.

You were also in the swamp (tier 3 biome) with tier 1 and tier 2 foods without being rested, so no wonder stamina was an issue hahaha

Well deathsquitos can be mitigated rather effectively with root chest piece from the swamp combo it with padded armour and you got mistlands ready gear along with black metal weapons until you can upgrade. I’d agree with the lineup sorta however I’d say you can swap mistlands and meadows placement, prefer building in meadows but exploring and fighting in the mistlands is way more rewarding and fun plus the added buildables and craftables are nice! Then swap ocean and swamp and you’re good to go ocean has nothing to do and for being a Viking themed gamed it’s a gimmick that gets old fast especially solo, swamp is at least fun to fight in and the boss gives a challenge at least.

I can 100% agree on the swamps, that was a slog to get through, and I effectively spedran it my first playthrough, but I can't agree with the Mistlands, it seems like you where WAY underprepared for it, You need the Plains gear at least before you even set foot in there. Not to mention the "Mystical Woods" feel is pretty much exactly what it is, its a place where the veil between the world and magic are the thinnest, it IS the closest thing to the "End Game" we have right now.
