@@LisaSantana15 From what I understand, East Asia, while ethnically diverse, is racially homogenous, and results in a lot of ignorance (rather than racism) towards other races. As such, they don't understand the dangers/harm of perpetuating stereotypes about black culture. Plus I think said ignorance is why so many of their fans give them a pass; if a western artist appropriated black culture (which they have, usually a white artist), American fans would NOT stand for it. And Kpop sounds like this because South Korea's population is small (and still in decline) and they wanted a larger audience. Given that Japan is also seeing a population decline, I wonder if Jpop will also start to break into the western music scene--and if we'll see the same issues.

The kpop one-the way it's phrased-is very xenophobic in nature. It sends a message that one should only listen to music from ones own culture, and if not you're not just odd, you're also a self-hating "traitor" of sorts. This is dangerous thinking. One can appreciate other cultures' art while still being proud of one's own.

It's an interesting discussion. I understand the sentiment of "how can you enjoy it if you don't understand it?" (As an American whose dad loves hip-hop, my mom always told me to understand what rappers are saying rather than just nodding to the beat, so that kinda stuck with me, and I never got into foreign-language music much because the lack of understanding creates a dissonance for me). Though telling someone they aren't allowed to enjoy MUSIC is absurd to me. I read somewhere that a reason that celebrities don't have concerts in India (aside from poverty and conservative perspectives) is because many Indian states prefer to listen to their own area's music rather than other states, let alone going to see a concert from a foteigner. No idea how much of that is accurate, but it's dusturbing to see how nationalism can turn to gatekeeping so quickly.

I remember when Bong Joon Ho won an Oscar for his film Parasite. For context the movie was in Korean and became the first foreign film to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. But he said this in his acceptance speech "Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films." This can be applied to any language, but I also think about a show like Squid Game, how many people watched that show when it was in Korean.

Korean horror films (as a Romero fan, I'll always hype up Train To Busan as the most gut wrenching zombie media of the Zombie Craze in the 2010s) are the gold standard imo, and even tho The Academy doesnt give horror the love it deserves, i hope that foreign horror continues to find audiences in the States! Its an amazing starting place for learning about the history of other countries and helps humanize people we don't hear a lot about in other media in the US

that’s so true but also i feel like instrumentals have been getting worse recently. they used to be able to have their own melody aside from the singer and were often orchestrated, and the tiktok musicians simply being less experienced makes sense for them but even for huge artists like taylor swift, if you compare midnights instrumentals to even folklore/ evermore they feel… incomplete. almost more like ambient music than a song.

i swear only an american person could call listening to music in a foreign language weird bc the rest of the world listens to english music without speaking the language and no one questions it. when i was growing up, all i could hear on the radio was music i couldnt understand until i learned english later on. american and british entertainers (mj, britney, the beatles just to name a few) have always been super popular around the world and a big chunk of their international fanbase doesnt understand them. it's genuinely normal

regarding the makeup entry, i work at sephora and there is absolutely a shift in how people consume cosmetic products. while natural looks and skincare is what we get requested the most, people still manage to overconsume, both in makeup and skincare. clients will purchase multiples of the same type of product just because it's trendy even though it all ends up performing the same as what they already own. they'll have 5 different bronzers, but they gotta have that new patrick ta one because everyone says it's soooo good. biggest difference between consumer behaviour before and after the pandemic is that before, people would come in and ask for recommendations on products based on what they already own, but now people come in and ask for a specific product and don't want any recommendations. i love how you said "we already have everything there is to have, how many more palettes or lipsticks can come out?", that is absolutely how i feel about makeup in general, but somehow new releases seem to still sell out regularly just because it's hyped up online

As much as I would love to see a newer artist grow into image or spend more than 1 album in an era/phase, I don’t think its pheasible in the current music landscape. People’s attention span has decrease over the years to a point where if an artist is not changing something every 5 seconds, people get bored or start to demonize them by saying “she only has one sound” blah blah blah blah. Then the label is quick to drop them or not promote them as much because they arent doing the numbers like they used to. So I feel like the current music industry is not supportive of the whole character development of an artist’s music image.

This is why I say that streaming isn’t necessarily a great way to show that an artist is good or amazing. Any song esp with TikTok can be a hit but it doesn’t mean it’s good (collectively because I know music is subjective). Also, streaming mainly only helps those with strong fanbases and who are already mainstream. Singers like Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, etc will always chart high on billboard because they are established mainstream artists with a dedicated fanbase. With dedicated fanbases, if they want their favorite artists to be on top they will literally do whatever they can to make sure they get that number 1 even if the work isn’t necessarily good (example: the swifties with TTPD).

Literally wtf would I wanna know that?! There's no reason to tease something that you haven't even STARTED let alone FINISHED!!! I see the same thing on Tiktok all the time. A 20-30 second snippet of a song comes out, and the song either never comes out, or when it does come out months later, everybody's over it already. I'm German and when I was a kid there was barely any German pop music out there that was popular. Listening to German Schlager or Volksmusik was considered an old people thing. So back then it was the default to listen to English speaking music. We also always had some amount of crossover from French, Italian and Spanish -speaking artists, especially in the late 2000s. In the last couple of years German speaking music has become more and more popular again, but tbh it's usually not my cup of tea, so I'm still over here listening to mostly English and Spanish, occasionally French songs. I also speak all of these languages to varying extent, so maybe I need to branch out, haha!

the kpop one is so crazy cause like... as a brazilian who immigrated to the states, i assure u everyone is listening to english music without knowing a lick of english... most of the world does. why is it that when someone is not centering america/english speaking countries in whatever they do, its suddenly "cringe" or unacceptable? make it make sense. in regards to the makeup one, i think celebrities have swung the other way on the pendulum (into the clean girl look) bc its a way to seperate themselves from the masses. this eventually makes the general public want to emulate it whether its to be "trendy" or "cool," but at the end of the day, we're all looking at celebrities and following what they do to get closer to them, whether it be parasocially or to look like the ruling class (albeit subconsciously). anyways i think american makeup specifically has gotten boring tho, so i just tend to look internationally to see what other people are doing. whether it be in england or china or india, i feel like each country has different makeup trends and its so fun to see! picking and choosing what i like about different makeup trends is what makes it fun for me and the end product is my own kinda concoction of different influences which is SO FUN. we just need to stop being influenced so easily and stop thinking abt what other ppl think abt us. I have been listening to JPop for 20+ years and have recently dabbled into KPop. When I was a kid and told people what kind of music I listened to, they all sounded exactly like that commenter. It got to the point where I almost kept what I listened to a secret because of all the weird looks and questions I would get. I’m actually kind of glad that KPop has become so popular because it doesn’t seem so weird or socially unacceptable to listen to music in a different language. From my perspective, even if I don’t always understand the language, a lot of times, I can feel the meaning in how the artist sings and in the production. But, for some people, lyrics are important in how they connect to a song and to an artist and that’s okay. At the end of the day, music is subjective and we just gotta let people like what they like and not make a fuss about it.

I’m probably a bit older than your usual demo (born in 1981) and I feel like I was born at the perfect time for me. Im just old enough to remember MJ becoming the biggest thing in the world and the heyday of Whitney and Prince. I got to watch hip hop go from a fringe genre to the biggest genre in the world. I got to watch 80s hair metal get phased out for 90s alternative and grunge. But in a general sense I had an analog childhood and digital adulthood. I grew running around in the woods and meadows, playing in the creek, making up games and riding bikes with my friends but we had the internet when I was in high school. I love that I got to have these kinda old school experiences as a kid but I can now order my groceries from the comfort of my couch on my phone and have someone bring them to me. I do miss 90s gas prices tho lol when I started driving in 1997 gas was 85 cents a gallon 😂

We're in the time that fast music is popular and we have new music every other day. Eras don't really last long anymore unless you're an "older" artist or a more known person. The visuals also are getting repetitive when it comes to homages in videos or fashion. I've seen a few English speaking reactors who get so frustrated when they don't understand the lyrics to a Korean song and I'm just screaming the whole reaction turn on the subtitles. And then I've seen others who will say they don't like subtitles on as it takes away from the music video, but then complain they didn't understand the song. My favorite is when people react to Mic Drop by BTS and they will say I didn't understand a word they said when a good 80 percent of the song is in English, I even saw a reactor say this about Dynamite by BTS which is a fully English song. It's just such a weird take that just because one doesn't speak a language they can't find out what the lyrics mean. I mean so many people all over the world who don't speak English listen to English songs. When people loved Despacito I didn't see many people complaining they didn't know what they lyrics meant.

I can find it cringe that people say "you like kpop? you can't even speak Korean, you can't relate to the song". ehm, translations exist. that's all I have to say. or no, I may not be able to relate to everything because not everything can be translated to other languages, the original meaning can get lost in translation but those are exceptions. and people can listen to music just for the vibes. as a kid I didn't know English (just started to learn it) but no one batted an eye when all non English speaking people were enjoying English music without speaking or understanding English. should we consume only the music that's in languages we speak? do I have to learn Korean to be allowed to listen to kpop to understand it right away? I don't think so so I think the original statement "you can't relate because you don't speak the language" is flawed

For the deluxe thing, I actually agree with them. Tbh I never understood the point of a deluxe album that comes out like a week after the initial release with just 2 or 3 new songs. Like why not just put them on the album? An instance I can think of, off the top of my head where the deluxe tracks were released separately was with Melanie Martinez’ K-12 (I know there’s a deluxe too) but the After School EP was basically a collection of deluxe tracks. And it feels so much better to me, it feels like we’re actually getting new music and not just “oh I forgot a couple of tracks so here’s a deluxe version”.

4:19 Halsey's Badlands deluxe had new tracks interspersed instead of tacked on at the end and I think Electra Heart too (depending on what country you're from i guess). A few examples of deluxe tracks that contribute to the narrative/theme of a record instead of just extra songs that are also there.

fiona apple’s cover for the idler wheel i believe was one of her drawings she made during the album. if visuals are a part of your process, sometimes the most representative artwork comes during the process as opposed to after. but if its just a photoshoot, i agree it makes more sense to make all those choices once the album’s finished

I love when an artist (of any medium) explains their interpretation, concept, ideas behind their work i find it really interesting. But with like for example a painting in a museam everybody who sees it has its own interpretation, how it makes them feel etc and in the end not only both are valid POV but also for the audience maybe their own individual takeaway is in the end what sticks for them

honestly, the kpop opinion used to be my take before i became a kpop fan many years ago. i was confused why people would listen to music in a different language that they don’t understand. but one integral part of any art is that the message can be told without any words, with just vocals or instrumental. also kpop is also heavily about visuals, performance, and personality, not just music. so i feel like people who say this just really don’t understand how different kpop is compared to any other music genre, and are just very narrow minded in terms of music. music is about the vibe, you don’t need to completely understand it to like it. and if you’re curious about the meaning of the song, google is free lmfao

The deluxe version one was interesting cuz it reminds me of how melanie martinez does it with her albums, she released crybaby and then the ep crybaby's extra clutter and with k-12 she released the album and then after school ep. And I honestly kinda like it that way, at least for melanie I assume it was just better that way, she was making a storyline with her albums so making a deluxe that would follow right after with random song would be disrupting that story, not only that but I feel like with the eras thing we throw away a good aesthetic, worldbuilding, and such around an album without seeing it fully fleshed out, at this point it feels like just a costume, like some albums, lets say midnights to just say one but definitely no the only one, have such a good concept and world around them just to be the same themes of the last one. On the billboard one, I feel like people downplay the achievement of the number one, even calling the billboard system flawed, cuz like you said, those are still a big concentrated audience of millions checking out your stuff, and if those millions beat out any other song, how can you deny the number one? Yes there are, and have always been methods to manipulate the charts unfairly, but the way charts act now seems more in reflection of our current culture rather than a flaw. It honestly makes big hits such as flowers or cruel summer even more special as they're getting harder and harder to achieve and even represent cultural moments such as cruel summer and the peak of Taylor like we probably will not see for a long time, or the miley comeback with all the gossip, and popular sound (partly made by the same people of harry's house which made a moment just a year before!) around it. Sorry for the big comment 😭, im just ranting tbh

In my opinion, references should be more diverse and eclectic than what we tend to see. For instance, both Gaga and Katy sampled “What They Say” for “Sour Candy” and “Swish Swish” respectively. There’s also Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul” and Charli’s “You Used To Know Me” both sampling “Show Me Love.” I like all of the songs, some more than others, but sometimes it feels as though the idea is “let’s make a 90s house inspired song” and then they stop at the most popular songs for samples. Maybe I’m just bitter because I want someone to sample “It Feels So Good” by Sonique. Maybe she doesn’t even want people sampling in. Anyway, I want samples that introduce me to cool music from the past-not just stuff that scratches my nostalgia itch.

In my opinion when a song streamed by a fanbase and it gets numbers on charts it is a hit, 'cause it is a lot of work to build a dedicated fanbase that will constantly support you afterall. What is not a hit it's a song that labels put on YT ads, Spotify popular playlist and adjust streaming services algorithm to make it mass streamed, by paying money to streaming services

Look at Taylor's new album - it's a garbage and even her fans know it but they stream it because they are dedicated to her. That means, some songs are not hits, but just because fans are brainwashed, they do everything possible to beat their fav's rivals

An interesting example of a deluxe album to me, was Rare by Selena Gomez. She added the songs and changed the albums track list, which I thought was cool. But generally, I remember deluxe albums starting out as “here’s a couple songs that I recorded during the sessions for this album that don’t really fit the theme of the album, but I wanna put them out anyway.”

I forgot to mention this under the community tab relating to unpopular opinions, but I think the vocal trinity is interchangeable. I know it’s not really “official” since I am not sure what the criteria is outside of vocal performance. The vocal trinity as people know is Mariah, Whitney, and Celine. I may get chewed up for this, but I would replace Celine with Toni Braxton since the vocal trinity covered the divas that ran the 90s. I’m not well versed in Celine’s catalog and I am not discrediting her as a vocalist, but it push came to shove, I easily would replace Celine with Toni 🤷🏾‍♀️. Toni Braxton is never given her props and not appreciated in Gen Z for me idk

Honestly, the K-Pop opinion feels like something only someone who has English as their first language could say. Most people in the world are used to speaking and consuming media in multiple languages, I think it's just hard for someone who is American or British to grasp if they only speak English and have never had to search or diversify the media they consume because so much music/series/movies/... are in English. People who listen to music that's not from their country (and/or in their native language) is the norm, people who only listen to music from their country (and/or their native language) are the exceptions lol.

The K Pop one is stupid. In the early 2000s, with the Latin craze, there was a Spanish version of every big hit, and we all ate it up! (HELLO SHAKIRA!!!) It made us all love Spanish! It's great for us to hear songs in different languages! I say bring on the KPOP!

For me tiktok affects the choreography in songs more , babifying(?) it. I’ll watch a music video and this “oh they want this to become a challenge”. Especially when the artist is actually a good dancer. And that K-pop comment was kinda funny. You responded with basically the same arguments I would have. Koreans generally don’t understand English that well but love a lot of English music. Constantly play it in cafes. Works as background music better that way, or just pick up on key words like “love” or “you and me”, the simple stuff. I think it’s inappropriate when they play explicit music in places where there’re a lot of kids though…

I saw someone say that stans on Twitter talk about music like executives in a sales meeting. I totally agree. The consumption of music and art is so conspicuous because of social media, so it’s easy to use sales as evidence for one’s superior taste. Having online communities is great! I was there on GagaDaily in the early days of stan culture, way before it was mainstream, and it was nice getting to connect with people who also liked Gaga, especially since I lived in rural America. It wasn’t perfect, but now it feels a lot nastier. I watched a video once that said people are swapping out religion for pop culture in a way, and I also think that has something to do with it. If you’re not into church, sports, or anything like that, you’re going to start deifying celebrities and identifying with them as a source of purpose. It feels good to root for someone, to feel like their achievements are your own in a way. Stan culture, sales, charts-it helps people feel better about themselves. It legitimizes their subjective taste into something morally superior.

Music is its own language and can connect people. I grew up in a very Latino neighborhood (i should know Spanish,but i don't except the bad words lol)and in a touristy area with a lot of international visitors. My friends and family listened to a lot of reggae, dancehall, and reggaeton music. When I was in middle school, my dad liked a group called 2NE1. Idk if they were Korean. I don't think there's anything wrong with liking another culture or country's music. Just maybe check the translation when singing out loud so you know you're not singing something you wouldn't normally ex. Singing a curse word and you don't curse in English
