I once got fired for going to a close relative's funeral. She happened to die at around the same time that I had mentioned that I needed off as early as the interview process, more than six months beforehand, for a wedding. I returned from my unavoidable bereavement + a weekend that was promised to me in the interview only to find that I was fired. Apparently, attending a wedding and a funeral (that was a Thurs - Sunday) was just too long to be away. It was a freaking long weekend. When I left the office Wed evening, I had been unable to contact a client because the client had not answered the phone or email. My boss was upset that she had to contact that client, instead, because I would be gone on Thursday. She wanted me to keep trying to reach the client, unpaid, Wednesday night. I said no. I drew a necessary boundary. I told her I was going to be in an airplane all night and then writing and giving a eulogy and that my phone would be off during the airplane travel, funeral, and wake. I would, therefore, not be able to contact the client during my unpaid bereavement time. Let's also go ahead and add that, as the only close family member who was traveling a long distance, the funeral date had been set for Thursday because that worked best for my boss. That's right. We planned the funeral around my boss' schedule and she fired me anyway. This lady was a real piece of work. She straight up told me that even though she was only allowed, by law, to verify past employees' employment, she bad-mouthed them to potential employers, anyway. She did it right in front of me, once. She also didn't 'hire' people, but called them 'self-employed.' No benefits. No nothing. And she was a lawyer! She even asked me to serve finger foods at her private parties. If you're out there, lady, and you're reading this, then you can go straight to hell. Straight. To. Hell. I hope you choke.

The company had 2 Bereavement days. At the suggestion of my manager I took short term disability for mental health then long term disability for the same reason. When I returned I was demoted, then the team I was on was all people who had been out due to personal situations like illness, bereavement etc. about 2 months later we were all laid off. I share this to state one thing: we should be able to take the time needed without repercussions. At a different company prior to this one they had 1 Bereavement day that was offered. It was a company that had International employees. One guy said it takes almost 2 days just to fly to his home country, so if someone died in his family he was basically out of luck. I got approached by a recruiter for a large US tech company recently. I work in Europe and get 30 days vacation per year plus public holidays, paid bereavement and sick leave. In the job spec - that they "desperately" needed people for - they had 12 days vacation from day one and put a lot of emphasis on this like it was an amazing forward thinking offer from an up to date player in tech. I couldn't believe it. I can't believe I didn't already know. It's a shame, because America looks like a really cool place to work for a while and meet people. What the majority of people today do not understand is that each state is fundamentally set up like a country. The Fed is supposed to have limited power in what they can and cannot control ON PURPOSE!!! Anyone that wants to have larger Federal Government should just pack up and leave the USA. It should be standard policy for anyone to get a month of paid vacation. I know that might lead to scheduling conflicts, but that is why you have managers and HR departments to schedule around vacation. Employer’s should want to give their employees time off so that employees can enjoy their wealth from working. If people have more time off they spend more money and find hobbies that give them reasons to work hard so they can get the gear to do the hobby.

I work for a small 15 employee MSP company. We have a "no vacation policy" which means we have no limit on how many vacation days we can take. When we add up all the random days we take off plus actual vacation time we take over a month off a year. We get vacation approved as long as not too many people have requested time off for that same time period. I have never had vacation time requests denied. And then we have regular sick time off on top of that and pretty much every holiday on the calendar. Every 3 years with the company we get a full month sabbatical leave paid. That's on top of the no vacation policy. This is a small 15 employee company.

In Finland often you can convert the vacation bonus (roughly 2 weeks salary) you get for the summer holiday into two weeks of vacation. Ofc you lose a bit of money, but if you value your free time that would give you 7 weeks of vacation per year.

Sad that the countries who have zeroes in those numbers are mostly little countries no one ever heard of. Speaks volumes. Sadly. That bereavement leave makes me maddest of all, I remember when my mom passed I needed more than 1 day off to take care of her final expenses, canceling her phone, cleaning out her apt, etc, they wouldn't give it to me. I ended up having to use up my little vacation time that I had and I had a hard time getting that approved. Still makes me mad to this day and this was 20 years ago.

In Australia you get 4 weeks, additionally you can also purchase additional leave of 4 weeks lot of people use it as a force savings which they either use the additional leave or cash out.

It’s kind of funny to hear Americans talking about “slave labor” in China when China has so many more vacation days in a year. Who is really a slave?

I am really glad I live in Europe. There is usually minimum 20 days by law and then one or two weeks more depending on company you are working for. In my case it is 30 days of vacation a year + 30 days of fully paid sick leave if you get ill + 5 sick days a year where you can say I am not feeling well today and I am not coming.
@harleyshoffner20862 жыл бұрын
I worked at Truck pro in Mississippi and you have to work a whole year before getting less than 5 days you can take off. We need a federal law giving everyone paid time off because so many companies won't give you anything!!!

I worked in Germany for 5 years, and I was amazed at how their public holidays are always on a Tuesday or Thursday. There's no moving the holiday to the Monday or Friday for a long weekend there. I remember 1 fortnight where there was public holiday on thursday then next week tuesday and thursday were also public holidays. So take a few days off get 9 days off... Crazy!

Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦!!! Where we have minimum of 14 days paid vacation per year, 30 paid sick days, and (depending on the company) minimum of 3 "family days" to attend funerals... All this on top the public holidays we have. Like I'm honestly amazed that sh*t is that bad in the US. Love your channel Josh. Keep doing God's work Josh😄👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

I'm from Sweden. And I have to point out, even though we do have sick leave and vacation days by law(with some exceptions). Companies are doing their darnest here to try slip through that and find a loophole for not paying these days. And last couple of companies did just that. I had several days not payed to me and I had to fight with them etc. And there is no minimum wage stuff either as you might think. Some companies have even refused to pay workers at all, my mom experienced that back in 2000s. So it's not all that glamorous as you might think.
