He had luck to be born in this family and additionally nearly no competition in his upper class field of work, as there just weren't many University graduates back then. This guy is such a meme that I doubt his existence. I went snooping around quora to see some of his answers, and it gets a lot better than what’s in this video: A user asked “What should be the raise in salary that makes it worth to change the work? Assume other factors are approximately identical, and the same city” To which he answered that you should never change jobs just for money. And even coined a term, “wage whoring”. Then went on a huge rant explaining why “wage whoring” is wrong, immoral, and will hurt you in the long run. He even said that a consequence of “wage whoring” is lifestyle creep. Sorry Kent, but just as employers are for-profit organizations, so are employees. Especially in these times, when prices on literally everything are going up on a daily basis. So if you work at the same job for the same salary, as you were 1 year ago, you are effectively making 10% less. Which is why people are quitting and finding better opportunities at record numbers. It’s a 2-way street, Kent.

The average Peasant (on average) worked 150 days a year. In Rome (so long as you weren't a slave), most worked from sunrise to lunch time and used every afternoon to study, family time, politics, and drinking. Even shop owners flipped it around to work the afternoons and rest in the morning to provide produce and drinks for the middle class going out for the afternoon. Nobility (knights, clergymen, etc.) Worked around 50 days a year and ate and drank the excess of of peasents taxes to the kingdom. Farmers across all ages until very recently (because we had to get jobs as well to get by) planted in the spring, upkept equipment in the summer, and harvested in the fall... With much time to themselves and family. Nothing about what we do is normal, nor is it traditional. Producing for the consumer culture we've created at the expense of longer hours and tedious labor is backwards and benefits no one. 5:31 I went to Ridgewood for highschool because it has a CS program. The school had cases of suicides and kids mysteriously transferring away because of bullying. But they were always shoved under a rug because the bullies there had personal connections to the people who run the school. People there also saw themselves as progressive or liberals but were extremely out of touch. I don’t know where that collective influence comes from. It was generally extremely toxic and privileged environment in a school run by adults who were very self interested and were strangely quick to blame the kids when any conflicts came up. I know people say high schools are bad but this was just a big circle jerk of adults running a school with no rules. Activities some of which included things that were extremely illegal and unregulated. I’m talking about using school web portals to spy on students. I was one of the few who were forced to pretend to have a blind eye but as I grow up and look back the more I realize how messed up some of the adults running the schools were. It gave me PTSD just reading that name again. Some victims who come out of the school pops up on the news sometimes to speak against the school environment but it’s usually just dismissed. When you're a kid and you're raised with some decency, you think like this guy does. I would feel bad about applying to multiple jobs at once, or feel weird about applying to multiple internships or colleges knowing full well I might have to reject some of them. But then you realize that not every massive corporation is just like a personable mom-and-pop store, and the minor inconvenience you may cause them by backing out is much smaller than the inconvenience of screwing yourself by trusting a company full of strangers.

It's so funny, I've been let go once in my trial period and I've also one because I hated the job and got a more secure offer (with corona in mind). when they fire you, you have to suck it up and accept it. when you quit in the trial period, they get mad because they invested in you (recruiter, laptop etc). Its such bullshit, I just do whatever I feel like.

Kent is viewing it like a prison, perhaps from a time when companies really did care (?). I am fortunate to know a couple business owners that need hacking skills but even they are liable to backstab eventually (“it’s just the way life is”), as do the employees when they leave. I like to think better communication would ameliorate these issues but secrecy and deception is baked into the game.

Real story: after being for 14 months working at a accounting office I decided to switch jobs, went to an interview, the manager told me "if you really wanna make it in this field you gotta lower your head and work for at least 3 years before you even get a raise", he was really the kinda of guy that would say things like "no one wants to do overtime nowadays, whats wrong with people?" Well I worked at this job for 10 months and I found out that a girl that was working there for over 3 years had a salary lower than mine, I started applying for other jobs and a got an offer that pays me almost 40% + than this one, so, monday I'm telling my manager I'm out, whatever, I'd like to work for over 3 years without the need to change jobs, but the company has to earn my stay just as I have to work to make them profit.

With that first response from Kent, I half agree. I say so because when you initially start a job it would be inconsiderate to come in with all that baggage. They did let the applicant push back their start date in order to accommodate to their prior plans. There has to be give and take. Example, I'm a first responder so my job and hours can be demanding. I know there will be some years I won't be at Thanksgiving dinner or home for Christmas. I've had some years where I did however. I can't just pick and choose when I want to work but I do participate in our quarterly vacation bids. I do limit my overtime to try and make time for my hobbies, passions, and family. My employer does NOT come first. But I know what my duties are the demands I need to meet. Give and take. Create balance. It's easier said than done but I guess in conclusion I do not agree with people finding reasons to not be there, but I do agree with them finding a balance to prioritize their mental health, friends, family, and interests.

Someone just quit the company I worked for because he was forced to miss pulling the plug on his grandfather. It wasn't necessarily the company's fault; they would have needed to take a full crew out of the field for several days to get him to an airport. But for everyone who actually has the option, when an important life event is going on, every Christmas could be a major event if that's your family (as is mine), screw your employer.

Just follow the money. Aldershof is/was probably paid by corporations, so “advising” people of being loyal to them is in his own best interest. As his “advise” is public, he needs to look good in front of his current/former paying masters, whether he believes in it or not. His other advise to people trying to immigrate on work visas might be accurate simply because it’s not going to affect his revenue stream or corporate reputation so he can afford to be honest. I bet you, however, that if he were in the immigration consulting business, he would be convincing everyone and his grandmother to immigrate, marketing degree or not. These kind of people are very dangerous because they hide behind their gray hair and years of “experience” to portray themselves as “experts” and provide free advise that just fulfills their agendas and that can ruin those that follow it.

I had a previous job where after found a hire we liked, made an offer, and then had to get the hire approved again by upper management. Upper management couldn't be assed to do this in a reasonable amount of times so we'd have these people strung out for months waiting for the job they were offered to materialize. And several times they finally just said, No. That position is now gone. Rescind the offer. You can do this all again next year, with the same result. So if employers can pull a job out from under you after they give you an offer, you should feel free to walk away from an offer whenever you want, too.

If Kent earned his MBA in 1965 at about the age of 25, that would mean he's about 81 today. He technically isn't a Boomer but was born a few years before the baby boom, before the US entered WW2. Anyway, to the important stuff -- you provide a very valuable message for people of all ages, not just young people. I'm a boomer and retired executive from a big company (Disney), and I believe it's important for people to understand they have options when determining work/life balance. No one should let a company determine that for you. OTOH, there are trade-offs with everything in life. Kent is imagining someone with a certain set of career aspirations, someone like him (or me) with an MBA from a well-known program pursuing a path towards the top of the business world. Giving generic advice as if everyone has a similar goal is a big mistake. That's also true for advice from anywhere -- some careers actually WILL require the types of commitment Kent is describing. The real answer to questions such as these is, "It depends on what you hope to achieve from your work and/or your association with that particular company." If you are ever interested, I will share more of my personal opinion/observations, but I wouldn't want to detract from your main points by seeming to argue against them. It's important for people to hear your message and -- much like you do -- think for themselves about how to apply your thoughts into their unique situations and circumstances. Keep up the good work!

I'm thinking after 4 months, it's unlikely to have accrued 2 weeks of vacation. So yes this is going to require asking for some accommodation. Maybe he will have to cut that vacation down or take some of the time off as unpaid absence. Then again, maybe the company is willing to be flexible and willing to let him use future vacations time early. Only way to know is to ask. Don't get where Kent gets the idea that this guy must be a brand new worker who's never been away from home before. Could be changing jobs for his 2nd or 3rd (or more) job, and just yes, he planned some vacation while he was job hunting. Nothing wrong with that.
