Great analysis! A movie that got so much praise everybody started to call it overrated. But now that everyone calls it overrated it's easier to go back and see how well crafted of a story this film really is. It's intense and exciting, but there's a lot of depth to these characters. That's a rare combination for a superhero film, and shouldn't be called overrated for it.

I really enjoyed this analysis because you didn't choose to focus on any of the one elements that make this movie great, but instead chose to focus on the whole and how everything came together pretty seamlessly. I know it's hard to do that because the tendency when tackling TDK is to focus on Ledger's brilliant performance, the Joker and the movie as a deconstruction of the superhero genre what with the hero basically losing and his love interest being killed, to name just a few. Big kudos for this one, love your channel (and the accent) and hope to see you tackling BB and TDKR someday.

As someone who tends to insist that Batman Begins is a superior film to its sequel, I appreciate the respect shown to the first film here. As Batman in Crisis on Infinite Earths said, "There is a difference between you and me. We both looked into the abyss, but when it looked back at us, you blinked." This, I feel, highlights the similarities and differences between the Joker and Batman that you highlighted in this video. Great analysis by the way.
@RantandBollox7 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much. The contrast with the two of them has always been very important, precisely because it is a hairs breath of difference between them.
@SoulOfSparta7 жыл бұрын
The quote is actually from the "Crisis on Two Earths" animated film and it was referring to Owlman, but your point still stands relatively well. Both characters had one bad day that changed who they were, but Batman used his tragedy to make him stronger whilst Joker allowed it to drive him insane. When the abyss looked back, he blinked.
@theamazingspider-man97927 жыл бұрын
SoulOfSparta Thanks for the film title correction, there are too many DC crises with too similar names, I get them confused a lot. It's irrelevant that Batman is saying it to Owlman, I thought the quote was applicable to this scenario regardless.
@SoulOfSparta7 жыл бұрын
Oh it definitely is, but in a slightly different way. When Batman says it to Owlman it isn't so much about the creation of these two people, but rather the toll that their endless crusade for justice had on them. The hole in things (to quote Morrison) drove Owlman to believe that the endlessness of not only their crusade, but also existence as a whole, left only one logical choice: end everything. The hole in both of these characters' lives was created both literally and metaphorically by the bullets that cut down their parents, hence the crusade for justice (to give the world back the meaning they lost that night) and the subsequent realization that this hole can never be truly filled. Thomas (Owlman) blinks in the gaze of this abyss and starts crossing the lines that Bruce refuses to. This new rule-less, ruthless man still can't fill the hole, and realizes that no choice he makes can ever have any real impact whatsoever. The hole can never be filled, and the rest is history. Sorry if I rambled or didn't explain any of that clearly, and again, this is all up for interpretation. I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to discuss the central theme of Morrison's run on the character (possibly the greatest of all time). Anyways, I'll end with one of the best quotes from his epic: “I looked into that hole in things over and over again until it hurt, Jim… and you know what I found in there? Nothing… and a space big enough to hold everything.” This is what separates Batman from Owlman, Joker, etc.

This video and the one you made on "Why Supervillains Are Terrible" are so good you've helped me perfect my own superhero series I'm making. I have so many good stories to tell about the hero and his list of villains but I had issues on what made the villains worthy of being a good threat to my hero. I understand now that it's about the theme of the hero and the villain. My hero will always represent hope whereas each villain represents different negative themes such as corruption, desperation, jealousy, spite, etc. Keep up the in-depth story-telling. Also while it may not necessarily be a superhero story, I always thought the Terminator series (1 & 2 that is) as good storytelling. T1's Kyle Reese is like Batman, a human who can take some serious injuries and keep going to protect someone, and T2's Terminator is like Superman, a tank of a man performing insanely successful stunts to protect someone. Think you can do a video on that?

A lot of people ever since this movie came out years ago have been jumping on this bandwagon saying it's overrated and have been praising the hell out of the DCEU films like Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman and I don't think they appreciate this movie as much as they should because it changed the superhero genre so much, thanks to this film people take superhero movies more seriously, it was a big game changer along with The Avengers. I was never on this bandwagon saying that this movie's overrated because I always saw that this movie was amazing, a great crime drama about anarchy and the questioning morality of not just vigilante Batman but of the people of Gotham City. Your analysis dives deep into those things and makes me appreciate this movie even more for what it is. A damn good film that has characters you like and challenges you and makes you think. Unlike Batman v Superman where it tried to do that but the only problem was I didn't care about the characters as much as I wanted to. Thank you and I hope that you make more videos like this in the future! :)

This explains so much about not just why The Dark Knight is an incredible movie but also why The Dark Knight Rises doesn't work -- everything Rises was attempting to do thematically had already been accomplished in the second half of Knight, despite it superficially appearing otherwise. The smartest, most interesting analysis of this film I've heard or read! I've always been troubled by the ambiguous morality of the second act and had come to wonder if it was a great piece of cinema that was morally nihilistic in the way of A Clockwork Orange. Your video, which I've watched twice, has convinced me that my view of the film was wrong, that I had let the sadistic amorality of the joker's actions distract me from the more important unifying theme of the movie, identity. It was amazing ! Although (and this is only my opinion), I felt sometimes it was jumping from one point to another too much to be able to keep up with the idea, the structure wasn't always clear. And for some stuff, it could use even more explanation (at this point, no need to be afraid to make it long, especially on TDK :p). For example, I didn't really get why during the scene where Batman 'dies' vs the joker, you're saying it is bruce who takes on the identity ? (Around 16:00). I mean, you say "how he (Bruce) sees himself takes over". But in which way does that affect his behavior ? Do you mean he lets go of the opinion the cops or Gordon have of him and decides to use force to perduade the Joker, even though its against what Gordon tolerates ? I'm asking this because for me, it was more like he gets angry and emotionally involved and wants to get abusive towards the Joker even though he's not sure to get the information. I had to watch twice to really understand it all tough so maybeI'm just a bit clueless :p thanks for the subtitles also because I couldn't understand everything you were saying ! Anyways keep up with the great work !!!!

Already knowing a lot about this movie, I never shy away from wanting to learn more. This is a brilliant movie and a great analysis. But what makes Batman so great, is that he doesn’t NEED a superpower to achieve the goals of a Hero, but rather the mindset and willingness to do so. Anybody could be Batman, make and design the suit, attach a flight suit, upgrade a vehicle, train in martial arts, create gadgets to function however they need to, and change their name. If you don’t know anybody who’s close to you, then nobody will know who you are. The idea of a Batman is more real than some would be willing to admit. Forget the high tech secret cave, the mansion, the batwing and the rumbling tank. Batman could be driving a Hummer, living in a two story house, by himself, with a wealthy income, and the only thing other people would notice is the guy that lives in the two story house, driving a Hummer. It’s quite interesting to think that literally anybody could be the Batman.

You asked for more perspective, here is mine; At @25:15, "Their identities so dependent on the public perspective of them" Batman is able to resolve its identity crisis by 'letting go of the past'. This is so instrumental to its character which 'separates us from them' that without taking this leap of faith in himself, he as the hero cannot surpass the villains in the public perception of him. Essentially, there is the information paradox - Batman cannot wait to see the consequences of his actions in order for the public to see him in light of his full timeline. The public is not developing in the story as fast as he does, therefore he is 'alone to carry the information' of his actions. The only way he can surpass the paradigm of NPCs is by letting go of his former identity being matched by his public persona. Once he lets go of being 'viewed in full view' such as "in broad daylight" reference used by joker as an allusion to the criminals "being caught" by the batman to get them to switch sides and take him for his word(until joker alluded to the mob their fear of being caught by the batman, he couldn't get under their skin) he can finally take up 'the dark' to be its final identity, instead of being shackled by the public spotlight having to serve as his conscience creating a paradox which does not permit him taking up the shadows as his method of choice.

Amazing video. You're the hero KZbin deserves. A talkative guardian, a watchable protector. A dank knight.

Honestly the best analysis I've ever watched in youtube. So well thought out. (Edit) it's very weird to me that people have made out batman to be a boring character when he has so much growth and great depth to him in this movie. I'm glad this analysis could present how I always viewed this depiction of the character.
