Hi, Danielle! Sarah here from New Holland, PA (zone 6B/7). I have known that some in our area start their Ranunc's in the early Spring, but I always plant mine out in late November, or early December. I use a low tunnel, similar to what you showed only with heavier weight fabric (1.25 oz doubled). SO......when is your harvest window? Mine starts a week or two before Mother's Day (YAY!), and lasts about 6-7 weeks total. Are the stems nice and long when early Spring planted? I wonder if I should plant both times for longer bloom time......... I look forward to seeing your gorgeous blooms! Great video, thanks!!
@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens2 жыл бұрын
Great to know Sarah! Thanks so much for letting us know! Mine start to bloom around May 20th. They go until the heat takes them. It seems slightly different each year but I would say early July I pull them because I need the space. I'm happy with the stem length and quality. Are you leaving your plastic tunnel up during snow and ice? Thanks!
@Stauffer-fs8kz2 жыл бұрын
@@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens Danielle, thanks for the super helpful reply! I use Agribon type fabric, then I don't have to water often, unless we have some 45-50 degree days back to back (the fabric lets some rain through). Yes, it stays up through snow, ice and wind! I use wire hoops (just make sure the plants aren't touching the cloth or they will freeze. I space them about 2 to 2.5 feet apart. I use heavy wood scrap pieces up against each other to hold the fabric the whole length of the tunnels I have a really long tunnel this year....like 60 feet, plus a short one. I have 400 Ranunculus planted. I learned this method from Jennie Love's blog. It would be interesting to try your method too though! Many Happy Blooms! --Sarah

@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens2 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen! It's up to you! You can treat them as an annual, or you can let the foliage die back and then dig and store the corms. Since I work with limited space I pull them once the heat sets in. I need the bed for the next crop before I have time to let them die back.

I desperately want to have my cut flower garden ready in time. Pray for me. I winter sowed a lot of seeds this year. So many have sprouted. I started snapdragon seeds for the first time in October not understanding that I could have planted them out in the fall. Now they are blooming under lights 🤦🏽♀️. What do I do with them now? I hope I can still keep them going and get them out after the last frost date(March 28th). Still a month away. At least I now know I can grow them. Fall planting them for sure this fall. I just recently learned how to count back 6-8 weeks to properly have them ready for spring. Again, NERVE WRECKING! But in a good way. Learning so much . Can’t thank you enough.

The packaging of the corms I bought recommended 4-8 inches apart and I did 4 inches due to limited space. They're all growing now but my first buds are really short. Is it because I planted them so close? Can they be dug up and replanted elsewhere?

I realized that when I planted my ranunculus that planting them towards the back of my garden was a huge mistake because they are shorter than most other flowers I wanted to plant there. How damaging do you think it would be to move them forward? I really don't want to wait until mid summer to plant there.

I started mine in January😬 I'm in zone 5b, but last year I started them later in February to plant out in late April/May, but we got almost immediate temps in the 80s that zapped my spring flowers. Lots of my ranunculus didn't even bloom! We'll see what happens this year😂

I'm in 5b and have been overwintering mine in a cool greenhouse since the fall - I think around October/November I sprouted them. They were going well until the heating system failed and we got a freeze in the greenhouse. I'd say about 40% loss and some are coming back up. I have them in grow bags so I am sure that helped insulate the roots on most. Looking forward to getting them in the ground next month (fingers crossed as there is a foot of snow that just fell here in NH!)

I've ordered ranunculus from Longfield Gardens that will arrive the week of March 21st. I'm in zone 7, and a nice lady from the company told me that I can soak them for a few hours when I receive them, and then just plant them straight out into the garden. I'm going to try it that way since my corms are arriving so late in March, and I didn't plant them in the fall like you mentioned. Do you think I can still have success with them doing it that way? Next fall, I will try to go ahead and get my corms in the ground so that I'll have flowers earlier the following spring.
