This song hits harder when you know the singer actually turned 21 in prison

He sounds like country music because Merle is country music. He was the real thing!

Merle was one of the prisoners when Johnny Cash would come and perform. The Govenor of California at the time as Ronald Ragin and pardoned his sentence.

Lonesome Fugitive and Sing Me Back Home are two of his big hits. He had 37 #1 hits in his career. Live version of Working Man Blues is great as well.

I grew up my dad playing this song; I didn't listen to Mom and my father, I fafo. I didn't go to prison, close but no cigar. Learned the hard way been walking with Christ for for years at 39.

Two songs, "Once a Day, Every Day, All Day Long," "Today I Started Loving You Again," not to mention "I Wish a Buck Was Still Silver" and, of course, "Okie From Muscogee" and "Fighting Side of Me."

except for the part about doing life in prison, this song is autobiographical. He was in san Quentin and in the audience when Johnny Cash did his concert there, and that was the turning point for Merle to go into music!

Merle did turn 21 in prison. Fortunately, not "doing life without parole". After a troubled past, Merle was serving 2 years for robbery in San Quentin when Johnny Cash played a concert for the prisoners. Merle subsequently decided to pursue music instead of staying on the wrong path.

Had the joy of seeing him in concert in 2014.. 2 yrs before he passed; he was joined by Kris Kristofferson. Mr. Haggard could still sing pretty well, even tho he had been diagnosed with lung cancer just prior. He said he planned to tour/sing until he drew his last breath.. which he ultimately did. Grew up listening to country music.. he was one of the great true country singers starting in the 60s.. onward - so your comment about him sounding ‘like what country would sound like’ is very accurate! Great reaction as always. Thank-you.

The strangers also introduced me to this song. There was a couple who turned the movie into a comedy by calling the main character potato sack and talking to screen (dont go in there, hes right there type stuff). Made movie even more enjoyable.
