except for the part about doing life in prison, this song is autobiographical. He was in san Quentin and in the audience when Johnny Cash did his concert there, and that was the turning point for Merle to go into music!

Merle did turn 21 in prison. Fortunately, not "doing life without parole". After a troubled past, Merle was serving 2 years for robbery in San Quentin when Johnny Cash played a concert for the prisoners. Merle subsequently decided to pursue music instead of staying on the wrong path.

Had the joy of seeing him in concert in 2014.. 2 yrs before he passed; he was joined by Kris Kristofferson. Mr. Haggard could still sing pretty well, even tho he had been diagnosed with lung cancer just prior. He said he planned to tour/sing until he drew his last breath.. which he ultimately did. Grew up listening to country music.. he was one of the great true country singers starting in the 60s.. onward - so your comment about him sounding ‘like what country would sound like’ is very accurate!
