The song was originally going to be called "suicide", but the label freaked that people might accuse the band for "pro self deleting". So the singer decided to change the name as a form of protest. The song is about suicide, but not promoting it. It's moreso through the eyes of someone contemplating suicide.

I felt your reaction to this so much. Went to Ozfest in 2004 - this was the band that played before Ozzy Osbourne after 7 hours of concert festival. I had never heard of them, and experienced this song (and others - the whole album is glorious) live. By the time they walked off stage, I didn't even really care about seeing Ozzy anymore, I HAD to know who this band is. Later, I bought the CD, and this song was the one that made sense to my brain. 19 years later, this song still makes sense to my brain. I loved your reaction to this, because you hit all of the feelings that I had years ago - from "what is this about?", to "amazing tempo changes" to "this guy can really sing", and also, this band is remarkably good live for having such complex music. Enjoy the rabbit hole, and I look forward to more of your content reacting.

One of my favorite things is when bands incorporate elements of traditional music into contemporary music. System of a Down brings their Armenian heritage to the forefront of their sound, making it as integral to their music as their politics. It tickles that mental itch when I hear fusion bands like Skindred, the Hu, and the Sidhe bring centuries of heritage into contemporary genres.

I recommend "B.Y.O.B.", "Toxicity", and "Prison Song" for your next SOAD reactions. Their sound definitely has that Thrash Metal base, but you'll hear layers of the traditional Armenian music they grew up with, Rage Against the Machine's Protest Rock, and some Frank Zappa-style artsy/hippie weirdness. One of the most unique Metal bands out there.

Since I couldn't find anyone else mentioning it..... The 'angels deserve to die' line refers to the odd way that our society looks at death vs suicide. We see a clean cut young person die and say 'oh that poor angel, taken too soon'..... but we see a person die of a drug overdose and are like 'well, they chose to do drugs and thus killed themselves'. Thus, Serj says he cries for the angels that deserve to die.

With SOAD always have the lyrics pulled up, most of the time there is a deep message going on. They have Armenian roots and almost always have a great message inside the song. So Serj has followed a blended group of religions - iirc Buddhist, Christian and Native American concepts. My take on the lyrics has always been "self righteous suicide when angels deserve to die" is satan was a fallen angel and deserves to die but Jesus allowed himself to be killed which was not necessary (self righteous) if God just got rid of the devil

The solution is obvious, you react to all of System Of A Down songs and music videos. This song is about suicide, more specifically when young people commit suicide and some people say they deserved it, or it was inevitable. The "Father"part is about how Christianity condemns suicide victims to hell.

Ok so this is my understanding of the lyrics. He is sing from the perspective of Jesus seeing how people today go about their lives droning away and not living. “Wake up, grab a brush and put a little make up”. This upsets him so he says to the people, “I dont think you trust in my self righteous suicide”. At the end he says “father into your hands I commend my spirit, father into your hands why have you forsaken me”. At the end of The Passion of The Christ Jesus looks up and says “father into your hands I commend my spirit. Why have you forsaken me?” So Jesus being upset with humanity and having asked when crucified is asking again “why have you forsaken me?” Almost like saying “this is what I died for?”

I read it as the crucifixion. That Jesus death was a self-righteous suicide. Because he could have prevented it if he wanted to. And the angel that deserve to die was the devil. Mostly because of the father and to your hands. SE of these songs the are recommending are just straight heavy, with nothing musically interesting about them. Instead of these tired and non-contrasting songs like BYOB and Prison Song. You should react to Question next time you do SoaD. This song is much better, actually has a melodic part, and has a legitimate reason to be recommended rather then being "the one that might have been on the radio" or "the one that some non-fan has heard of". I am rather certain that Mr. Boyd's favorite Metallica album is not going to be Load, nor is his favorite Finnish metal band going to be one of the male ones.
