In the early 2000s I worked in a restaurant with a preachers son. I had gone to the Houston show where Maynard was sick and the crowd sung for him all night. At the end he promised to add dates to the end of the tour to make up for the night. I immediately grabbed tix for a later show and offered a ticket to the preacher son if he would be the sober driver. 10 minutes in to the show he said "I feel like I'm on all kinds of drugs and can't explain how I feel, this is beyond amazing!" For weeks at work after that he never stopped saying thank you.

I think everyone here will agree that you don’t LISTEN to TOOL, you EXPERIENCE TOOL, and I can say that, from all of the reaction videos I’ve seen, that rappers and rap fans get that the most. The rappers almost always appreciate both the music and lyrics, and I love that and really appreciate it. Some people react on a surface level and I can tell they are not REALLY ready for TOOL, but you are ready. Keep listening to TOOL, you will find your life changing and the way you listen to music changing. TOOL just gives you something no other band can.

I've tried to explain, in vain, and mostly learned either people get it 1000%, or they don't get it at all. Watching someone who would have otherwise not listened to TOOL, totally get into "it" and move their body and face showing they are totally "IN IT", makes my chest soar and wanna cry. Before my dad died, I bought him a copy of "10,000 Days", and told him to smoke a big fatty, put on his headphones, lay back, close his eyes and just listen. I told him it would change his life. I hope he did. I really hope. Thank you for bringing me PURE JOY. I hope you have a wonderful, music filled life.

And yeah, I suppose being around her affected Maynards view on a religion. the relief at the realisation that the song keeps going for a while longer. 😄 I feel that. and I love the anger in the end of this song. "no. we are not going to let this relationship fall apart. we are not going to watch ourselves grow apart until we can't bridge the gap any more. we are gonna talk this through and we are gonna keep talking. because I know that this can work. I have seen it work. it's just a matter of us sitting down and connecting. we're not gonna let this relationship go to hell just because we let our connection fall away. we are not going to split up just because we are too lazy to do relationship work. not gonna happen. the pieces fit!" I take from this song that it is about a fundamental thing in every kind of relationship. between whoever. always the same mechanic. making it about the relationship between a person and their god is something I never thought about. but yea. still applies. it's about a core mechanic of any and all kinds of relationships.

Great stuff as usual, brother. Your original take on the lyrics actually made me rethink the meaning of the song, which I've been listening to for the last 15 or so years. I think you'd love Lateralus, 46 & 2, Vicarious, and Wings for Marie. All are fantastic tracks. I always thought this song was an attempt to reconcile faith with reason. Both pieces fit in the sense that they provide answers for many aspects of life, but often seem to be at odds/unable to meet in the middle. Watching them fall away is a metaphor for growing up and either losing faith or holding on to it so fervently that science/reason seems at odds with your truest beliefs. For an unrelated but interesting suggestion, I think you'd have a fun time reacting to We Got the Moves by Electric Callboy.

Schism was my introduction to Tool back in high school and is still one of my all time favorites. The music video is amazing too, completely unlike anything else being made at the time. It broke open my teenage brain in such a good way! Like a psychedelic trip even without adding substances to the mix. The mountain imagery you were talking about resonates for me too - their music is so cinematic, it can totally envelop and transport you. First suggestion for another band: Alice in Chains, absolutely essential for any metal education. "Love Hate Love" live at the Moore is where I'd send you first. It showcases Layne Staley's incredible voice and the raw emotion he poured into their performances. This one is a total dirge, operatic and melodramatic and tortured but cathartic. Second, since you're loving the lyrics, instrumental effects, layering and all the production details with Tool, you'll probably also love Nine Inch Nails. Definitely a genre defying project, but plenty of it is at least metal-adjacent. "Closer" is super popular but I'd suggest "March of the Pigs," "Wish," "Head Like a Hole," "Reptile," "Into the Void," "Physical" - there are so many! Third, have you tried Black Sabbath yet? If not, you should check out their song that's also called "Black Sabbath," the opening track from their (also eponymous) first album. 1970. 3 chords that launched the entire genre. Slow, spare, haunting, cinematic. I've got a bunch more ideas for more metal, and things that are not quite metal but might hit similar buttons in your brain based on your reaction here. I'm excited to watch through more of your stuff!

Great reaction, Teddy! Love to see people really diving into Tool. My recommendation for more like this would be The Grudge, Lost Keys / Rosetta Stoned, or Lateralus. ✌🏻

So glad I checked your KZbin when I didn't see it on your Patreon. This album came out 10 days before I graduated high school - and I still listen to the whole thing on repeat. I considered it kind of like a graduation gift that keeps on giving and never stops giving. It was so cathartic watching you feel the music, much like I do. It's visceral - TOOL are musical, production and lyrical alchemists - like a gift for your brain, a tuning fork to your nervous system. Enjoy your trip, =) You can't go wrong with any song off of this album (Lateralus)

I ignored rock for 20 years. Grew up on PE, the JB's and ATCQ. At 25 I "Discovered" Zeppelin and eventually Tool amongst so much good music. Still love my hip hop, but Tool STILL makes the hair on my arms stand up now and then. It just hits so hard. I'm 50 now. the more you listen to, the more you know.

I love the visceral reactions. Not sure any other band can use this. This is what Gene enjoyment. I am grinning ear to ear and I’ve heard this song 1000 times but nothing makes me happy to see somebody new react to them and for the first time. One day I will explain my experience with before, but I took a long break from them for decades and rediscovered them again after seeing them live in the early 90s twice. I was stuck on the first two or three albums and rediscovered a few years ago

What you called a tear in the fabric of time I’ve always thought sounds like a baby’s heartbeat that you hear through an ultrasound.

Just think, you've only scratched the surface of the Tool journey. You don't just listen to Tool's music, you experience it!

This is one of the greatest albums ever conceived and my favorite album ever. It holds many secrets also. To name a few the song “Lateralus” was written based on the Fibonacci Sequence. Also the album can be played in a specific order to be listened to as one long song. The track order of 13/1/12/2/11/3/10/4/9/5/8/6/7 all run into one another. Cheers

I was vaguely aware of this song in my teens, went through some grim depression and recovered, discoved this song a few years back when "healed". I cried throughout. Just sat in the garage between lifting weights and it was just beautifully cathartic. Anyway. If anyone is going through it, the key is to get through it.

“Tearing the fabric of time” that’s exactly what tool does and they take you on a philosophical journey that you won’t come up the same after listening to one song. I hope you’ll react more to them, they are brilliant

Its actually very fun to see a tool fan made over the course of a few videos. Tool is absolutely a journey. And with each one you do, you gain a different appreciation for some aspect of tool. Pneuma you get wowed by Danny. The pot can get you hooked and help you realize theres more to tool than at first appears on the surface. Sober, seeing it you get the sense of Maybard and his struggles. Schism is the song that made ME fall in love with the band. Its just layers of deep and hard sounds. And alot of their stuff dabbles on religion. Its just cool to see someone on their tool journey.

Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion... between supposed lovers. My favorite lyric in this song.☺️💕

Yes! Love your reactions! More Tool! Reminds me of when first heard them properly, although I feel like you understand them quicker than it took me!

Why, sir, now you know how to enjoy an eargasm. Multiples, I shall say. I like your reaction to Tool so much. It makes me feel like I was back in the time discovering them! The whole Lateralus Album is great. As some already commented: Parabol and Parabola!

The end of the song, the instrumental is supposed to reflect the mind racing and someone going crazy trying to "make the pieces fit" it's such amazing song writing. Great reaction!
