Maynard is the master of the double and triple entendre... writing lyrics that can be interpreted in 2, 3 and sometimes 4 different ways - that all depends on how deeply you dive into each Tool song. He often uses sexuality and religion as metaphors in his writing but, amazingly, they seem to always have a much deeper meaning when you dissect them. Maynard has stated that this song is actually about opening up emotionally.

which one has 4 meanings?
@hunterfitch59514 ай бұрын
@@tacotacotacobajablast6821 The Pot has a ton of different interpretations. From the song being about Led Zeppelin, Marijuana, Government Hypocrisy, a particular judge that used to sentence weed smokers to crazy long sentences and was found out later he smoked pot, there's even a theory that the song is actually part 3 of "wings" "who are you to waive your finger..." Maynard is talking about his own hypocrisy after flaming the "ghouls" in Wings... it goes on and on in that song.

i've heard it was a critique on the culture here in america of overstimulation - like short attention spans and instant gratification. more or less how that destroys our minds, much like this act possibly destroying bodies. so theres another meaning for the list.

well same thing can be said about a lot of different songs, generally in rock. Individual interpretation opens up the possibility of many different interpretations but I also understand your point about Maynard. Fewer people have been able to write as masterful lyrics as Maynard has. The metaphors, poetic lines, are all so genius, it makes one wonder for a long time about a lot of different things.

This is the first song on the Aenima album, which is about beginning the journey of self healing and the inner work that leads to spiritual enlightenment. This song (IMO) is about exploring the things inside of you that make you uncomfortable (your trauma) in order to start healing. As the album progresses he metaphorically eulogizes his old self, discovers love outside of himself, rescues his inner child, and works with his shadow self to become a more complete version of himself. All of this sets up the next album, Lateralus, which continues and furthers the journey of personal and spiritual growth. 🌀

I believe you would benefit highly from knowing MJK's writing style. He doesn't write lyrics and have the band put music to them. The band composes or mostly composes a song and then he sits down and comes up with rythms, syllables, and then lyrics to fit the music. I've also heard he's typically under the influence of some sort when doing this. But no matter what, the dude has a unique style and it absolutely rocks. Glad you're diving into them more.

Teddy you’re actually incredible at interpreting lyrics. You seem to catch stuff at first glance that took me dozens of listens to understand. However a lot of times you’re saying “it could be this or maybe it’s about that” and I strongly believe that any good writing/lyrics/poetry means many things. In other words I wouldn’t second guess so much - kind of like you said with slight modification, I think this song IS about consumerism AND it’s about a bad relationship AND war (I hadn’t thought of that) AND one you didn’t mention it’s about addiction. The lyrics are just subtle enough to be applied in many many ways and I think that’s the point! In your reactions you keep coming up with great insights and try to figure out which angle is better instead of realizing it’s both!

At least on its face before alternate interpretations I believe the song is about excess of anything in general. You start off happy with a little, but then you do/use it so much that's not enough anymore. You need more of it to get the same feeling you had before. That's the stinkfist analogy. At first you get stimulation from the finger then its not enough till eventually your past the elbow to try to get the same feeling.

I think the war analogy is wishful thinking. :) The song really is about anal fisting. But(t) it is used as a metaphor for sensation. I think he's saying we can get used to anything, even an arm up our ass. (Classic Maynard) This was on their 1996 album and it is more prescient today. Overstimulation numbs the brain. The constant media and need for more and more stimulation is destroying our souls and ability to be present.

Edit: for spelling (and still might not have it) It is SIMPLE: it has ALL been done. I, in my 50's, love Tool and have listened from the beginning. They know that everything they are selling (musically and lyrically) has been done millions of time before. They, simply packaged it better and more honestly than most before. Maynard is, in my opinion, literally pulling someone out of their own butt. ' Turn around and take my hand'. He is waking people up. It is not about war. It is about being pulled out of your own issues and morasses. 'Shoulder deep in the borderline', he is trying to save someone from their self-destruction. Not war. It is just saving a loved one from their own delusions. If a person offers their own body parts to save you (reaching shoulder deep when you might not get it back) shows love and intention to help another out.. It is awesome to see someone being introduced. Good on you. Brother I get you and what some have done to your country. I see borders destroyed (not in expensive neighborhoods tho) and have felt your pain. Be as well as you can and God bless. Check out: die eier von satan by Tool. Hey, you mentioned a recipe. LOL.

What I personally understand from these lyrics is a critique on society and the entertainment industry. I see a metaphor of a puppeteer putting his arm up your ass to control you, the "borderline" obviously being your anus in the metaphor, but it's really your consent. It slowly and gently desensitizes you to the feeling of it controlling you, using that overstimulation that numbs you, so that you don't realize it, and then you're just desensitized to anything because you've lost control of your life and don't feel any connexion to what you're surrounding yourself with in your life, and you end up doing crazier and crazier shit to feel something again, to feel in control again, to fight that numbness
