Toni Tennille and Daryl (Captain) Dragon. Back in the day Tennille was working in a show she had written, and Captain was working as a keyboard player for the Beach Boys. Tennille's show was relocating and they advertised for a new keyboard player. Captain auditioned and Tenille hired him. A couple years later The Beach Boys were looking to hire an additional Keyboard player and Captain returned the favor and suggested Tenille. She got the job. So they were working together with The Beach Boys and their relationship grew from that. They eventually went out on their own and had tons of hits. Oh he had a habit of always wearing that captains hat and while he was with the Beach Boys he picked up the nickname Captain.

@@kimhesketh2016 According to her story. The reason we get so much BS nowadays, like Trump Russia, is because people believe ANYTHING, without proof. I never take one person's word over another. It's not my business to take sides. If he had liver problems, maybe he was an alcoholic, and maybe that's truly what she hated, and maybe she stated that instead of telling everyone he was a drunken sot, I have no clue, people are not always on the up and up about their personal lives. Our *Jerry Springer* generation is way too quick to jump on a bandwagon and run with it without proof. If I divorced someone, and they fell into a deep funk and had become a sot alcoholic, for whatever reason, maybe they just got depressed, and if I was a very public figure, and I truly loved them, I could see myself saying, we just divorced because they were very cold, and never stated they loved me. That puts off all the nosy people from digging into the matter any deeper and finding out the other person was an alcoholic etc. My point is, things are not always as they seem. The "Captain" had quite a musical background. His father was Carmen Dragon, who was an award winning songwriter and orchestra leader, eventually head of a university orchestra. Waaaaaa-aay back in the day I got to attend a special regional program hosted on the campus of University of the Pacific (UOP) that featured a band, an orchestra and a choir that performed and got it recorded. The participants were the best members of each program from many of the high schools of Northern California. The groups of performers were so large that they placed the band and orchestras on the main floor normally reserved for an audience, and the choir filled the balcony. Consequently the audience for the evening performance were seated on the stage. The choir was directed by Jester Hairston, a composer and director of choral music in Hollywood films. He even got talked into acting in a Tarzan film back in the 1950's. Anyway, it was day that I'll always remember. Observing and being directed by such supremely talented artists was a once in a lifetime experience. I've lost my vinyl copy of our performance many years ago, but singing in a choir of hundreds of voices was beyond description.

So, watching this video reminds me of what an innocent time the 70's were. The war was over and the bulk of the hippie movement was winding down a little. These guys were the epitome of wholesome. They resurrected Neil Sedaka's career practically single handedly and he is another song writer/performer that you should check out some time. He has quite a large and older catalogue of songs. Toni had an amazing voice and The Captain was an amazing song writer, master musician, song arranger and orchestra leader. His real name was Daryl Dragon and his father was Carmen Dragon who was a well known orchestra leader. I saw them live in Reno, Nevada in either late 70's or early 80's. I was a real rock chick back then and wasn't thinking I was going to enjoy seeing them but Harrah's comp'ed the tickets so I went. I was blown away by their performance. Toni's voice was just so strong and powerful. They lived in South Lake Tahoe, California and so they came to Reno a fair amount. They divorced in 2014 and Daryl died from kidney failure in about 2019, I believe. I know she was there with him when he died. He had not remarried.

I grew up listening to Captain & Tennille, in fact, I’m a fan of their music. I went to all of their concerts. She’s Toni Tennille, & he was the Captain on the keyboards 🎹 playing next to her. He used to be with The Beach Boys. He always wore a captain’s hat, therefore The Beach Boys gave his nickname the Captain. Both had families that were musical backgrounds. Her sisters, played background vocals. That’s who they are. Unfortunately he passed away in 2019, but she is still living.

Girl Power!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. This is more of my early childhood, my parents always had music 🎶 on and I was blessed to be exposed to artists like this. This is a great song, makes you want to get up and move.

This is such a happy song and it's so boppy. Totally can see why this was a huge hit in 1975.

Musicians wanted to play on "The Midnight Special" because it was after hours and they didn't have to change their songs because of censorship.

No matter what was going on, I always went home to watch THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL to see what bands were on! It was before I was old enough to go to concerts with my friends. I am 64. Roger in Pierre South Dakota
