The time has come to turn our focus onto the very medium which allows us to connect: The Internet. As we know it today, it has only been around for a short time: it's still an adolescent; still changing and growing. But even as we speak, powerful forces and interests are vying to influence and shape it’s nature as it reaches full maturity. And since humanity’s destiny and that of the Internet are intimately connected, it would be wise to be ask: how is the Internet doing? If the Internet could speak to us as a human today, what kind of person would it be? And most importantly, what kind of a person will it become in the future? Log in with Robert Foster as he poses these very questions to some of the most influential and powerful figures who are today shaping the Internet’s future. Featuring an world-exclusive, world-first appearance from the Internet itself. Only on Juice Rap News.
Written by Giordano Nanni, Rhymed & Performed by Hugo Farrant - in a suburban backyard home studio in Melbourne, Australia, on Wurundjeri Land.

+Dan Bull we're so glad we made this collaboration happen. We first heard from Dan back in 2010, around the time we were making RN6 (Cablegate). We’ve wanted to collaborate with him ever since, but it took 4 years to make it happen. It’s an honour to have collaborated with him finally. And we like to think that this collaboration happened just at the time it should have. We could think of no better person to personify the Internet.

+PaPaNurgle Father Of Pestilence ...i dont think that is the main "problem or goal" for the higests-up's in this stirr-up, however the anonymity is the main target...thats why their media is dwelling on the anonymous hate-speech all the time lately, towards celebs politicians imigrants minoritys majoritys etc...hate they are causing in more than one way, while propping the SYMPTOMS 24/7 like oh our culture is in danger or whatever else their millions of think-tanks and ngo's come up with anyway, they r using problem-reaction-solution to re-design the internet...they wanna know who posts what....and theres nothing we can do about it cause all they have to do is pay a thousand trolls to just post that negative BS all day&night

+Ozymandias it seems only RT can take a laugh, the other networks think they are needed but ever since the dawn of the internet our interlect has excelled throughout past generations propelling Humankind to our apex. the sounds and synths tug on my very heart strings if blood was data I think I would bleed 1s and 0s since my inception and conception of how I use the internet. these words may rhyme smoothly so I can convey these words seamlessly to a whole generation who uses the internet not to impede our growth but to preserve and innovate as a species so that future generartions can decide what to do to the internet.101100010012

The open internet is the single most important thing for the human race to maintain, forever. These old geezers that think they can turn it into a walled garden simply don't understand the world we live in, and the nature of technology and the direction it's going. The genie is out of the bottle, and he's never going back. Even if they did somehow manage to build their dream network, we'd simply build around it. We have the technology. Within the next ten years we'll be seeing amateur rocket enthusiasts launch satellites into orbit. P2P MaidSafe comes online later this year, as well as a whole host of new information services and networks. What makes these morons think they can once again limit the flow of information? It's impossible.
@Stormaes
@Stormaes 8 жыл бұрын
+dieselphiend At the risk of engaging in a youtube argument: The internet was a walled garden when it began. its not like the internet is a precious thing that must be protected. I think its more like an idea, communicating together using electronics and computers. Meshnets and P2P tech fill the gap where limits and ISPs fall short. Take it away and the nerds will create a solution, "where theres a will theres a way", more than true in this case. No point complaining and whining about the old geezers, they will die soon and we will be well rid of them.
@dieselphiend
@dieselphiend 8 жыл бұрын
Stormaes The internet is very different than when it began. These day's, there's content filters dedicated to regions. There's even subscription based DNS routing services to subvert region based content filtering. For example, if you're in America, and you want to access BBC UK, you're going to get the message: "BBC iPlayer TV programmes are available to play in the UK only." The internet wasn't always like this. At it's creation, it did not matter what region you were from. So, from that perspective, the internet was not a walled garden. It most certainly is today, but there's also a dozen ways around it. "its not like the internet is a precious thing that must be protected." I couldn't disagree with this sentiment more. Afaic, information awareness is the single most important thing on the face of the planet, and that's exactly what an open internet provides. Just look at how many people are aware of deep politics these days, as opposed to the pre-internet world. An open internet is the single most important thing for the organic development of the human race.

+dieselphiend I'm aware that there are content filters for regions (being in one myself, Australia), but there have always been ways to get around this (VPNs, making friends on the net who will let you proxy through their hardware and connection, etc) and there will continue to be more because people will find a way. From that perspective it wasn't a walled garden, but it was in fact very walled from many other perspectives: universities, embargoes on encryption software being distributed internationally, ISP level, _actual_ walled gardens where people would pay for a service which only connected them to certain online services (like CompuServe, Prodigy and MSN). The internet is not a "precious thing that must be protected" because it will self preserve in many ways, its not fragile, and it doesn't inherently cause a shift in the way that humans exist. Its a very effective method of communication, and if this iteration of it is ruined for whatever reason, a new thing will take its place because people communicate. Its the communication that changes the way we exist, not "the internet". Lastly, human development hasn't been truly "organic" since we developed self.awareness its been a constant flux of manipulation and redirection by whoever/whatever (I'm referring to groups here, not lizard people) is in power, and I don't necessarily think that its a bad thing. Sure sometimes they have enslaved whole groups of people for no reason other than skin color, but many of the great accomplishments in human history (including the internet itself), have come from the intentional, very inorganic social structures enforced by (usually) the few at the top and I don't think that we should fall into anarchy because "the internet" (implying the group-think and echo-chamber behaviour that is usually behind groups that form on the internet) thinks so.

Stormaes Private networks have never been part of the "clear" net. The suppression of encryption technologies, at least in America, is fairly recent, and I'm not too sure they have a whole lot to do with my idea of the open internet. When I say 'open internet', I'm referring to a communications technology. I'm referring to our ability to openly and easily communicate across geographic boundaries. I'm referring to communication itself. We didn't have a way to share such content before its advent, and regardless of what protocol it uses, if it spans the globe, and delivers digital content to our devices, it's the internet. Not necessarily the open, clear internet. The internet carries both cataloged and non-cataloged content, both walled-gardens and public networks, it carries everything. I have no problems with private networks, as it's our right to make whatever type of network we want. What I have a problem with, and what I'm referring to when I use the term 'walled-garden', is turning the clear, public portion of the internet into a closed ecosystem. I have a huge fucking problem with having a Comcast or a Verizon ecosystem. I have a huge problem with being locked into region based content, because as far as the internet is concerned, it's one region- the world. My idea of the OPEN internet is a search engine which automatically searches in every language that exists on the internet, and automatically translates them into my preferred language. My idea of the open internet, is being able to view other countries content as if we were all part of one global village. And, while I'm savvy enough to subvert these region based content filters, everyone isn't. That's wrong. Furthermore, I would strongly argue that the internet (as in digital communication) is VERY precious and fragile. If we don't have laws in place which make the internet a common carrier, which protect the open internet, both private networks and public ones, then we will simply lose our ability to communicate as we do now. If they turn these (public) system into closed, walled-gardens, it will be impossible to do many things. After all, it is them who own and control the fiber optic backbones that lay on our ocean floors. We can not easily replace them. Just think about how many miles of fiber optic cables could become totally worthless to us, and you should better understand just how fragile it all is.

+dieselphiend Ok, so the suppression of encryption technologies is NOT a new thing. It has been around since the second world war and within the United States, was treated as a weapon (and you could be tried for arms dealing for downloading encryption from a country that isn't the one you are in. This was in force until 1992 when I think that the US "Agencies" realised that they couldn't effectively stop the widespread proliferation of encryption technologies and instead worked on backdooring them all. Virtual Private Networks have not always been a technology that existed, true. However this "clear" net that you speak of is actually a large collection of smaller networks that may or may not have been private at one point or another. I understand what the internet does in terms of it being a communication technology, what I am trying to say is that it is not the only communication technology, the internet sprouted from much smaller things and these things continue to be innovated upon by very smart people to find solutions to their problems (VPNs are an example of this), I don't think the innovation magically stops when the internet becomes controlled primarily by companies like Comcast or Verizon. They will just lose customers, some niche suppliers will start up, and everything will be back to normal. 20 years ago many people didn't know how to operate a computer, let alone get to the internet. Nowadays we have this thing called "Digital Literacy", those without digital literacy cannot access things that they do not understand how to access. Its not their fault. Sure it might help if those ISPs and Cable companies made it easier, but that's not their job, they provide the internet (or cable television) for money. Eventually the people who want to be able to do the many things that are impossible will ask their friends, will meet within their walled gardens with the intention of getting out. Those fibre optic cables are used for more than just the internet, they run banks, hospitals, doctors, the stock market, people in OTHER COUNTRIES USE THEM. Its not going to disappear overnight because some 'muricans decide that they aren't getting information at the speed that they feel like they should, or aren't getting the data that apparently they "need". Information wants to be free, and I don't think that a group of corporations within one country is going to stop that.
