This is the first time I've heard of and seen these two paintings. The descriptions and explanations given for both paintings were really informative and helped me learn more about my Catholic faith. Thank you for doing this. Please continue to do more!

Thank you so much for this gift on this 'feast' day of Raphael April 6th, which providentially now in 2023 coincides with Holy Thursday and the Last Supper's Institution of the Holy Eucharist. Great job! Sincerely yours in Jesus through Mary, Colapesce 🤔 (Do a deep dive)

Do you point to Archimedes as the young boy behind Pythagorus? (1:15)

To answer your question yes at 1:15 we are referring to the young boy.

It’s lovely to hear Vivaldi in the background! 😍 I first found this painting as a postcard when studying the City of God at the Augustine Institute!

I visited Vatican City a few years ago & have been looking through some of my photos during this Lenten Season. This is the first time I've studied my photos in depth. When we were there it was so crowded & there are thousands of important works of art to see, gardens to explore, museums to walk through, e.t.c. It's massive, crowded and extremely hot so I could hardly tell what I was photographing sometimes. However, I did manage to take a beautiful photo of this, The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament, as well as The School of Athens. Wish I had taken even more photos but there's just so much to see. These frescoes, the gallery of maps (the maps & its ceiling) and the gallery of tapestries~ along with everything else ~are much, much larger than you can even imagine.

"Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth-in a word, to know himself-so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves." - Pope John Paul II, ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FAITH AND REASON

I’m pretty sure that’s Alcibiades not Alexander.

These are competing interpretations. That figure might indeed be Alcibiades, since Raphael never specified. We support the Alexander interpretation for the following reasons: the figure is with Socrates (who taught Plato, who taught Aristotle, who taught Alexander); the figure's sword is akin to a scimitar, which is historically inaccurate but in the Renaissance was a symbol of military might in the East (like Alexander's conquests), and because Raphael included only a single military figure in the whole piece--Alexander the Great is a more exceptional and singular figure than Alcibiades, despite Alcibiades' Athenian connection.

@@goodcatholic4062 But the painting only has Aristotelians on the right hand side and Platonics on the left, Alexander was of course an Aristotelian. Also, the person I’m arguing to be Alcibiades is likely depicted talking with Socrates because they were good friends in real life, the same way Parmenides is next to Pythagoras and Aristotle next to Plato, Alexander had nothing to do with Socrates in reality, and whilst yes not all students depicted were actually taught by there respective teachers in the painting, they all still universally studied them via reading up on them, just look at Archimedes and Pythagoras, Alexander rejected Socrates’ works even in this context.
