Rapidan Dam experiences partial failure due to flooding

Rising water levels led to the partial failure of the Rapidan Dam in the town of Rapidan on Monday morning. The water is washing away buildings and powerlines next to the dam, leading to power outages and dangerous debris in the water. John Lauritsen shows us how people are now bracing themselves for the worst.

We have plenty of money for everything foreign but no money for our own towns infrastructures.The bridges, dams and roads needed attention yesterday..no one is taking care of America.

With all that rain and build up of water, was there no one monitoring the debris around the flood gates? Were there no engineers on hand to order reinforcement of the area that was breached? No anticipation of the effect that amount of excess rain would have on the damn? Will they learn elsewhere in the country that is bound to have a similar experience to help avoid a much larger damn from having this situation? Is anyone else asking these questions? Whatever happened to better safe than sorry?

Makes me feel like the wrong types of people have the wrong types of jobs in this country, and they have been given by others that don't know what to do with their positions but to receive a check!?? Does anyone really train or show others what they should be doing in engineering positions for bridges and dam structures!! Don't they take human life serious anymore or do they just think it's all for money and nothing else? Or is water too powerful of a thing that goes beyond what they could do?

@michelleluster9723 I heard "discussions" were underway to make improvements and repairs to the dam. Sad to say repair discussions were also underway to repair Champlain Tower, and we see how that ended up. Always boils down to money and politics. It does not help that we think intelligent people are currently in office. Who do we blame- the guy who got elected because he's great football coach (but has no clue how to do his elected job), or the people that voted for him just because he was a great football coach? Herschel Walker ran for state senate and got plenty of votes even though he is not the brightest person. He is a great football player.

Could this Problem happens when Government just keep giving themselves Pay Raises and don’t give aof older structures that need up keeping. So this way these poor RUN States don’t want to Spend State Tax Dollars. So they just wait to this Dam Fails and let Us Taxpayers of United States Flip the Bill , but Still keep giving themselves Pay Raises This is Not Fair to American People

This is crazy the dam has not failed people come on this is insane. if they would have done their duties and got a trackhor on that dam and cleared the brush and trash from the dam. that washout would have stpped. Its a fact. So people they want it to fail. Just ask around to some people who run equipment they will tell you this never should have happened. The local gov has faild their people.

Who would want to operate a crane from the top of a dam that could fail at any moment now that one of its embankments has washed away? The best thing you can hope for at this point is that the dam stays put until the water level and flow die off.

Yeah I was wondering if military has a huge helicopter with one of them earth moving jaws as optional equipment? Relieving some pressure surely would help.

Engineer said Tuesday morning that company with claw-arm dosed was 5 hours away and company said job was too dangerous. Dam surface is not stable.

Yes they could have cleared that brush. Im in tennessee. I would drive a trackhoe right on top of that dam and clear the brush. that dam is strong it will stay right their. They dont want to do anything. IF they did they would reply to my responce and fly me up their and supply me a cat 320 with a thumb on it and i would fix the blockage. its apparent though the local gov wants this to get money from biden and they will.

Nothing surprises me with lacking resources to keep drains , culverts clear to stop washing roads out . Now we have a bigger issue as we know what debris does if left in place. Will they get sued and charged over this as how many are going to lose out big time over this. So sad to see hours later and all the debris is still there blocking up the spillways.

@@shari9721 Long arm claw if possible to get some out . All that debris blocks the outlet to reduce drainage and levels rise too much too fast
