This is a sad and painful sight to see for anyone who had the pleasure to enjoy the wonderful food and service provided by the Hruska Family at the Dam store.
If you are able to support them in any way, a go fund me has been setup for them:

I'm all the way over in Australia but I live in an iconic mountaintop village (well, outside of it) in Queensland so I appreciate both natural beauty and local man-made landmarks. We are country so we feel for our neighbours and kinfolk, this hurt me. I am so sorry you all are going thru this and I feel especially for the family that lost their home, their business and their beautiful slice of paradise. Honestly, I feel for you folks; I can't imagine what you are going through.

I’ve been watching this from Ca since this all started. I was heartbroken when the house fell into the river, I was hoping the store was going to be safe. This is very sad. I wonder how far under the store and property this erosion goes. They might loose all of the property I hope the city compensates them for the entire loss and at a good price including taking in mind how many decades the store was there.

Exactly. The new cliff is unstable, and there will undoubtedly be a major construction project in the immediate area soon to stabilize the bridge and deal with the dam. The store was in danger of falling into the river and adding to the debris downstream, and would likely have to be removed to make way for the inevitable construction. WHY ? WHY THE H CRAP DID THEY TEAR THE STORE DOWN! HOW STUPID ARE THESE OFFICIALS! IF THEY WOULD HAVE BLOWN THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DAM TO RELEASE PRESSURE THE HOUSE AND STORE WOULD HAVE SURVIVED. CAN YOU SAY, STUPID? DID NOT WANT THE POSSIBLE EXTRA DEBIRS? OMG!

😢😮 I'm sorry to see they had to tell the store down. Maybe they'll get a new one built somewhere else and they can start over again and go on with their lives. I guess next I'll tear the damn down boy. Did that water do a job on that one side around the way the cliff and the embankment and everything. I feel sorry for those people. They should try to go on the best way they can. May God be with him and God bless him. Thank you.

The dam failed. Its purpose was to maintain a reservoir. The fact that house and store are gone, plus all the other damage, is a symptom of that failure.
@joeskis

well yes and no. The physical concrete structure didn't but all dams are supposed to have emergency spillways that can handle the extra water. Whatever spillway this had obviously failed.

I know we are not privy to the disaster response team meetings. But this was heartbreaking. It just seems to me that with the errosion slowed down there could have been other actions taken before the total demolition. At least there was some compensation given by the county. Interestingly the "waterfall" plung pool has moved back closer to the dam. I wonder if there's a further risk to it's structural integrity if this moves further back up the river. At least the ground work is laid for the new emergency spillway.

Water was made to roam freely, not held back! This is why we have disasters like this! When beavers build damns humans destroy them, why? Because they create flooding and erosion like this!

Wrong. It shows the stupidity of those who left the damned dam after it was decomissioned. Could have been breached for the price of several sticks of dynamite. Instead devastation to this home and business and now the dam has to be removed pronto.

Why blame the dam for, the land was going to give out whether the dam was there or not. The ground was weak and when the high water showed up it ran underneath the ground bank and weakin the bank even more. That dam was there for a few reasons, power and water control. Look at Michigan, this happened the same way . Dam broke and water went around until they were able to move back where it is suspose to be.

I’m happy to hear they were able to salvage what they could from the store but the fact that they have heavy machinery in that spot doesn’t make sense… could have waited to do it safely… why would they risk putting heavy equipment there? Why wouldn’t they have tried to force the gates open with that excavator instead?? Cities logic… why pay 1million today when we can pay 100 times that tomorrow?!?!
