I served in the Canadian Navy many years ago as a marine engineering mechanic. We attended Fleet school in Halifax for the various training we needed. One day, a mate and I were very late to class (we'd been out on the town the night before, drinking green beer--It was St. Patrick's day). The chief had us hauled up to his office where he sized up the two very sorry looking chaps before him. As a seasoned drinker himself, he knew we were still hungover if not still drunk! He decided to punish us in a non traditional way instead of filing an official report. We were to stay after classes and go to the workshop for a punishment he had in mind. Dutifully, we were both in the workshop after classes had finished for the day. The chief selected some 10 cm (4") diameter steel stock and instructed each of us to cut 3 pieces 30 cm (12 inches) in length and place them on his desk by the morning. With the hand hacksaws he provided us he must have envisioned us being there all night wearing our hands down to blisters! We were left alone and we began cutting--with hand hacksaws. But after about 10 minutes, with barely a scratch on the steel bars, I had an idea. We were in the school's machine shop and they had all sorts of equipment including a mechanical hacksaw similar to, but larger that the one you showed. We quickly sawed off the required lengths using the powered hacksaw and had our three pieces each neatly placed on the chief's desk, after touching up the rough burrs with a file, within about an hour. Then we went home to nurse our remnant hangovers and get some rest. The chief was fooled and nothing more was ever said about the incident. I cannot to this day walk past one of those saws without remembering that night!

@@FromSteelToWood Those were the wild days of my youth...I've gotten away from the drinking now and am much the wiser for it. I wonder if that old chief engineer may have known that if we were smart, we'd use the shop equipment. Perhaps. Most likely, though, he thought that he had us working all night!

This hacksaw will outlast us all! I like the idea of a hacksaw with a thick blade. I feel you can get accurate cuts where the small bandsaw can get a bit crooked. I've got the exact same bandsaw, sold as King Canada.... Thanks!
@GardenTractorBoy2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The cuts so much more accurate than the bandsaw but the bandsaw has it's uses too, we are pleased we have both. I am not sure how old the power hacksaw is but my guess would be 1950's. Take care

Actually, when I say it is identical to mine, it is, apart from your proper starter, working damper, and cut off switch and complete coat of paint. mine does not have a starter (yet, I have one for it) the damper needs looking at,, and the mains 3 phase lead has three choc block connectors in it! It is, like many things in my workshop. a work in progress! Stay well! Phil

Enjoyed your overview of the Rapidor Power hacksaw Joseph, these are great machines. Have you tried putting thicker oil in the damper to slow the decent down and it also will take the weight off the blade on the return stroke. Your hacksaw blades will last a lot longer. Tony
@GardenTractorBoy Жыл бұрын
Thanks Tony. We have not tried thicker oil that is a great idea. We did not realise the decent of our machine was too quick until we watched a recent video by Paul at Haxby shed when he was using his. At the moment we are not using the saw a lot as we are yet to find a good space for it in the workshop. I have just looked at your channel and had a brief look at your videos, I will be subscribing. I also have a question for you which I will drop into the comments section of the appropriate video. Take care

Thanks for sharing the video on the power hack saw - it looks like it does a nice job and keeps the cut straight. Did you apply any oil to the blade or material being cut? Might be interesting to time the cut of a piece of material with no lubrication and then cut the same material with some oil added for lubrication and see if the length of time to make the cut changes - another use your sisters toothbrush perhaps?? I find that a light brushing of used motor oil on the blade and material helps when cutting by hand with a regular hacksaw and repurposes the used oil. Just a suggestion.
@GardenTractorBoy2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. It is interesting that you should mention oil, we did an experiment a while back doing two cuts, one with cutting oil and one without anything. It was surprising how much quicker the one with cutting oil was and I am sure it did less damage to the blade. We did this on our other power hacksaw which is not as good as this one, we will have to do the test again and it will be interesting to test old motor oil against cutting oil. Take care
