I bought my first Pink Floyd album in 1969 (Ummagumma) and saw them live in 1971 and 4 more times after that. For me This is the BEST band of all times. Now I'm 71 years old and still listen to them everyday.

Pink Floyd is concept album stuff. If you are doing "songs" it's gonna be Time, Money, Great Gig in the Sky, Dogs, Pigs, Comfortably Numb, Meddle, Shine on You Crazy Diamond. But first listen should be Welcome to the Machine.

Great song, but it is a middle chapter in the book The Wall. The Wall needs to be listened to from the front to the back for the full effect. Is there anybody out there?

this is better in context with the whole album. it’s a 2 album epic story that you have to hear or see( cause there’s a movie). or video with lyrics just as good. make your own picture

Tbh this song in isolation is not bad, but it kinda lacks context. It's from their best album/s imo (The Wall) and beause it is a conceptual album and one of the very best imo (depending on the mood it swings between The Wall and Dreamtheater - Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory) Every song ties into another song while telling a full story. In The Wall they go from instrumental, accoustic and orchestral/symphonic into rock/hard-rock and even opera! If you ever have the opportunity to listen to The Wall (double album) and watch the movie with the same name, don't skip that opportunity.

MOTHER is one of my favourite songs, BUT, if i just heard it as a stand alone song, a rock song, i would hate it. The Wall is Roger Waters life story up until the time of writing, but it also fortells Rogers greed that will damage the harmony within the band . His mother lost her husband at the Battle of Anzio, WW2, when Roger was only 5 months old. She built a wall around her son to protect him, but stifled his development and freedom to live. To understand this song you need to read up on the meaning of the whole album, The Wall. Then listen to the whole album as one song, one true story. Then if ready, truely ready, watch the movie........see and hear what life was like for a fatherless child in post war England. The government considered the war widows to be a waste of money, an unwanted drain on the taxes that would be of better use in the politicians own bank accounts. The school teachers treated the kids like slaves, and the fatherless kids much worse......they were treated like peasant filth, serfs.

Love a reactor who is honest. Mother is only an "interstitial" in my opinion. But that's just me. Love Pink Floyd though.

Hahha fair reaction but this is a concept album. The ENTIRE album is one song, a journey through both a real and fictional character. The wall and all the songs are everything that isolated Roger Waters, the wall almost entirely written by him. Its quite satirical because he realizes his feelings are irrational but exists nonetheless. Roger is the cynic, Gilmour is the hope.
