The rap part is a kind of stream of consciousness for ADHD folks. Yeah, you're thinking about your relationship, and it seems like a roller coaster, but guys....our minds wander. "What's he thinking about?" Chinese chicken, Samauris, Anime, and racing cars. It's like that for some of us.

Truth. My daughter is ADHD, and if you don't have 20 minutes for an answer be prepared to refocus her on the topic. Legit, an explanation on how her backpack strap broke involved French toast, gym class, her glasses, orange juice, and soccer practice from two weeks ago. I'm trilingual...English, French, and ADHD.

To me, it is describing how once you are in an established relationship, you fall into patterns during fights. You get mad, you realize you might be at fault, you eventually reconcile the guilt with any lingering resentment and apologize. You see subtle differences in the lyrics of the chorus as the song progresses, with the last chorus showing the recognition by both members of the relationship that the pattern exists. "We realized we're both to blame but what could we do? Yesterday, you just smiled at me 'Cause it'll still be two days 'til we say we're sorry"
@dawnyoung8
@dawnyoung8 Ай бұрын
I think that too , but what BP is saying is gibberish is their relationship we are eavesdropping in on and not part of ! Think about any fight you’ve ever had . If someone walking by had heard it , they’d think it’s gibberish too bus the context is between them . The fact that the rhyme repeats and they’re doing wasabi and sorry. Says it’s repetitive . B P is looking too close to the lyrics and not the context of the content . So he’s not making sense of it . One time my sister and I were waiting in a line and a person walked next to us and said. 5,5,55,5 Fuck it ! Turned around and walked off ! He knew the context , we didn’t . But we still say it occasionally to each other and we know that context ! lol . That’s what makes that song great ! We can relate without relating
@andreykardashov6343
@andreykardashov6343 Ай бұрын
In my opinion what might sound like gibberish at first glance is just topics, reasons they argue about, which can range anywhere from food tastes to cinema to any minor thing. Think of it like listening in on somebody having an argument over a phone. You only get half the conversation and on its own it can sound like random gibberish because it's taken out of context.

I never thought about it like that! It’s been one of my favorite songs since I was a kid, but I always assumed the story was in the chorus and just had fun trying sing along to the verses. This makes so much more sense!

Wikipedia-Ed Robertson wrote the ideas for the non-rap "choruses" with the concept being the structure of a fight where the protagonist knows they're wrong and is just trying to save face. Robertson wanted to come up with a rapped verse for the song but all attempts failed. Bandmate Steven Page suggested he simply improvise the rap, as the two did onstage every night. Robertson heeded the advice and set up a video camera. He improvised the song at a slower pace to make rhyming easier and arrived at about four minutes of rap. He sent it to Page, who told him not to change a word. Two minutes of the improvising was almost directly compiled (with very little, if any, tweaking) into the verses of the song. Due to its improvised nature, the rapped sections are not intended to have any direct relation to the plot of the sung sections. The lyrics in the liner notes from Stunt contain some additional lines of rap that did not make it into the recorded version.

Canadian Gen-X guy here. I grew up listening to these guys. The core of BNL (Ed Robertson and Steven Page) were schoolmates but really only met and bonded at Music Camp in High School. They started to make a name for themselves in the Greater Toronto Area (they're from a 'burb called Scarborough, also home to Mike Myers) and famously their name got them banned from performing at New Years concert at Toronto City Hall. You really nailed it when you said that they must have a great sense of humor. Some of their early hits on Canada include songs called; "if I had a Million Dollars", "Be My Yoko Ono". They produced a self-made demo tape in 1991 to send to labels, and despite not getting signed. word of mouth and direct sales of the cassette at shows eventually led it to be carried by music stores and eventually achieving Platinum "Record" status in Canada. 'One Week' was the only really big US hit, but some others charted like "Brian Wilson", "Pinch Me" and "The Old Apartment". They have always had great acoustic numbers as well as these fun, upbeat pop numbers. An early cover of Bruce Cockburn's "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" is a fav of mine, as well as "Call and Answer".

BNL was a blast to see live. No two shows were ever the same. A lot of improv, making up new songs, or new lyrics for old songs. The one they had the most fun with is "If I Had A Million Dollars." All the things they'd buy their loved one if they had a lot of money, you'd never know what they were going to come up with. My feeling is that most of this song came from improvising during live shows. The hook is just a recognition that he knows how he is, and how his loved one is, and when they fight it just takes a certain amount of time to swallow you pride and make up.

Im glad you liked this. A lot of people disrespect them, thinking that they are not a sreious band. And you are right. They are incredible live. I've seen them twice and they are some of the best concerts I've seen. I think you mostly got this song. This one is more fun. But people dont realize that a lot of their songs go very deep. This was their breakout hit into major stardom. But their first regular hit in the US (they are Canadian) was If I Had $1,000,000. By the way, if you ever watched the Big Bang Theory, they performed the theme song. Pinch Me would be a great follow up to this. The rapper from this song does the singing. The video is a bit silly and dustracing, but the lyrics are deeper than they seem at first, well worth your reaction. There's a lot more, but I'll start there. I really hope you react more to them. Not many do, and in their time, they deserve the attention. They were my favorite for several years, and i still love them.

The rest is just the random crap you can experience or think about on a daily basis during the week.The things you get distracted by while you're living life, working, or for example waiting to make up with your partner, after you've both overreacted to something minor.

You pretty much nailed the song - it's about a couple fighting, waiting to say "I'm sorry," and the random stream of consciousness thoughts the singer has while waiting to apologize. The verses all mean something, but in the context of the song they mean nothing. Follow them up with the songs "Brian Wilson" "Pinch Me" " Old Apartment" or "If I Had a Million Dollars". Of course there is always the "Big Bang Theory" theme song too.

Their first hit was "If I had a million dollars" I believe, they also did the Theme song for the Big Band Theory.. I'm not sure if that was an original track that was used or if they made it for the show. They have had a lot of real good ones through the years.. In Canada they are Icons. Canada's R&R HOF, Everybody knows them up here. They are in the same conversation as Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Tom Chocrane, etc.

The core of the group, if not the entire group met as camp councillors. They chose the name Bare Naked Ladies to get attention, which they did when the then mayor of Toronto tried to have them band from playing in the city. They actually made a kids album that my kids loved called SnackTime.

I think the rap part is just a bunch of fun rhymes, and I think the relationship part is about one the games people play when they're in a relationship. The guy does something wrong. He knows she'll be mad at him for a predictable amount of time. Then he'll apologize and she'll forgive him. It's predictable because it's happened before and it will happen again. I think it's just a fun song that doesn't need to be overanalyzed.

Barenaked Ladies did the theme song for Big Bang Theory. Also the show used their song Be My Yoko Ono.

The rapping part reminds me of that meme of a couple laying in bed, and she thinks "I bet he's thinking of other girls right now". And the guys is actually thinking something completely random thought like "Why do toasters have settings DESIGNED to burn the crap out of your toast?".

I know absolutely nothing about the Barenaked Ladies except for this song. Never attempted to listen to anything else by them but they absolutely nailed it with this one. Yes, it is a fun song and so many people loved it, danced to it, tried to sing it lyric-by-lyric (especially during the fastest parts) but most of all I saw people laughing and having fun with this song and that's good enough for me.

I kinda always thought of it as a song about a couple having an argument, and the rap sections are all of the things he’s thinking about/doing to avoid apologizing.

You absolutely nailed it, BP, when you said this was probably a really fun band to see live. OMG, what an understatement!! Seeing this band live back in the 90's, especially at one of their infamous New Years Eve parties/concerts, was just absolute 🔥!! In fact, one of the most entertaining bands you could EVER see live back then, in my opinion. Their off-the-wall antics were just non-stop and relentlessly fun! They were not only exceptionally skilled musicians but naturally spontaneous and funny. Man, I miss those times!

Fun fact: Barenaked Ladies wrote the theme song to The Big Bang Theory. This song reminds me of an ex. We use to fuss all the time. When we realized we were better off friends, this song will crack us up now. This song is so fun. 😂😂

I've always interpreted 'the rap part' of this song as him saying 'this is who I am and what you'll have to accept.' The only 'nonsense' words in this song IMHO are the last line... 'Birchmount Stadium, home of the Robbie'.

These guys were always such a treat to see live. Once upon a time I'd open up a Now Magazine in Toronto and see where the Ladies were playing this weekend, and off we'd go. Even after they got signed and released real albums, they still put on such an incredible live show. Just full of energy, and funny as hell.
