Freddie's version is a cover of the Platters song. He, Roger Taylor and Peter Straker were the girl backing singers too. There's a video of the making of this - it's very funny, and worth a watch x

Its not really a pretence. He's is alive on the other side. The soul never dies, only the body does. ❣️And he sees it all.

In the famous interview 1987 where Freddie stood by the jukebox, he said he had wanted to sing the song for a long time because it suited his voice well, but Queen didn't record cover versions on principle, so he did it solo. I could well imagine that he already knew how ill he was and that he also chose the song because it reflected his inner self. The re-enactment of the old Queen videos also seems like a retrospective of his life.

Freddie looks so early Motown with his beautiful pink suit. He really does honor the writers of this song with his rendition. I love it, it feels like High School Dance music to me...yes I am happy to say, I am that old. I love Roger, Freddie and the others in drag for this video it is so much fun. At this point, Freddie had been diagnosed as HIV+ but not yet AIDS+, but he knew what was on the horizon and he wanted to do a little solo project while he was still able. He still felt that there was a lot he wanted to do with Queen but this was just something he had wanted to try. He is so great at no matter what he did, Freddie was a born performer/rock star with a voice that will never be matched.

Freddie played his part every time he walked onstage. I love how he recreated scenes from some of his earlier videos for this song, all those little details that remind us how much he loved music and performing. He was really something special.

The song Great Pretender is one of Freddie's best solo songs. In my POV, it reflects part of Freddie's life. Because what we see when he is on stage is different in real life. Like Freddie, we also have a pretense in life. Over the years, IMO if Freddie was famous then he is even more famous now. Because his song and Queen songs are just constantly being discovered by new generations. Thank you Prada for continuing to discover QUEEN's music.

Freddie did this to show his pretence of characters he portrayed throughout his career. Roger and Peter Straker filmed along with him . Freddie was sick here , but carried on filming throughout the whole night into the morning. Only our Freddie ❣️

Freddie was The Great Pretender, this song summerizes his life so well. Dave Clark: "Freddie was very dear, thoughtful and noble. In his private life he was the real opposite of that provoking star. He was very considerate. His nobleness wasn't directed only towards his friends and co- workers, unknown people have also often profited from it. He loved common, normal people. On the stage he was dazzling, arrogant, provoking, but he was very, very human in private life." His strength and persevarence towards the end of his life is exceptional.

The Great Pretender was first sung by The Platters, a doo-wap group, in the 1950s. You may want to check that out also. Their lead singer had a beautiful voice.

Freddie was extremely shy in real life. So The Great pretender its about his acting and spliting his soul between home and stage. It was recording in 1987 the beginning of his fighting against HIV. It was time with no mustache (1987-89) but before his short beard (1989-1991) And, of course, this video are fantastic retrospective of Queen clips (Radio Gaga, I want to break free, Bohemian rhapsody, Crazy little thing called love), Wembley 86 Magic tour and Freddie's solo clips

Freddy’s voice is so beautiful and he really knows how to use it. This song is the one I think most people can relate to. We do have an outside personality and an inner and inner personality or persona or truth, not people. As he said, in another song, we all need to talk to mother.

“The Great Pretender” was originally recorded by The Platters in 1955, and was rerecorded by Freddie 32 years later. He felt the song conveyed the way he felt about his public image. People knew him one way, but he was the ‘Great Pretender,’ and someone different behind closed doors. It’s also notable to know that at this time, Freddie had been diagnosed with HIV, and was lying to even the closest of his friends by pretending he didn’t have it. The music video for the song featured Freddie parodying himself in many of his Queen guises through video medium over the years, including visual re-takes of “Radio Gaga”, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”, “It’s a Hard Life”, “I Want to Break Free”, “One Vision”, and “I Was Born to Love You”. The backup chorus featured Freddie, fellow Queen member Roger Taylor, and actor Peter Straker in drag.

About this song: it is a very rare cover done by freddie, originally by the platters in the 60´s if I am correct. This is also historic coz this is where freddie lost his famous mustach. what a voice here ay?

The song is a cover of the original song from a group The Platters (1955, released by record company Mercury 😮) Freddie was really our Great Pretender 💔 Roger(ina) in a video has matured into a great woman ... not to mention Pete Straker 😅 and of course our sweet Freddie (also known as Jane Mansfield or Rachel St.John 😂😂) You should really eatch The Making of the Great Pretender... 😂

Like most great actors, Freddie was the polar opposite on stage to the real man. He was shy and very private in life but just like a superman when he was either on stage or partying. Truly missed.

I would apreciate it if you would react to "dont try so hard" Inuendo was the last album Freddy did before he went away and the weight of his sickness shows on it but at the same time he bever gave up on on his inner self - he knew he would go but he refused to become bitter - he wrot a song about his cat, about still riding the wild wind and at the same time he aknowledged the sadness he felt because he knew it would end soon. I love this Album to death. As far as solo songs go i would recommend "in my defense"

The platters made this song, I think Freddie hoped that because he didn't write this people would not assume it was about him, nice try Freddie. I love that the queen members all helped each other on their solo careers. I think this is cute,in the way that Freddie can't leave Roger alone when they sing as the threesome, they were very close. Great as usual Flick of wrist live I think it in the rainbow 74 or 75. This is the first time Freddie puts his grievances agenst their manager . He didn't listen which lead to Death on two legs, possibly the best Duss track ever. There's no complete version live , it is best to do the lyric version, then you can savour the venom Freddie says. You'll enjoy these two. Xx
