the video's simplicity is its genius. At the beginning he's naked and she's painted, then there is a moment where they are both painted, and during the outro she turns naked while he remains painted. It follows the relationship where you have two people that don't know each other, then they come together, fall apart, and then go back to being strangers again. I also love how this song shows both sides of the story... with him starting, but her telling her side too, including the harmonizing that mimics the yelling of a fight. it's a simple song and a simple video that's simplicity only works because it came from a complicated genius...
@AllRandomOutcomesАй бұрын
I've always viewed the video as portraying gender power dynamics involved in a realtionship - he's seems to be thinking of himself first and foremost assuming to be in the foreground in the relationship, but with the breakup becomes painted into the background a situation he's not used to. She starts off painted in the background, flexes her muscles and starts to asserts her sense of selfworth, coming into the foreground. A literal visual artistic metaphor.
@johnjsalАй бұрын
"At the beginning he's naked and she's painted" How do you know she's painted at the start?
@cbyrne7609Ай бұрын
@@johnjsal because she's painted when you first see her, blending into the wall. this isn't a trick, it's pretty simple to see what the director was doing.
@johnjsalАй бұрын
@cbyrne7609 Yeah, but we SEE the painting happening during the video, including the wall. Why should we assume her side was already painted? Why not have the wall already painted and only HIM not painted?
@cbyrne7609Ай бұрын
@@johnjsal this isn't that difficult to follow. the director is using the paint to show how the figures connect and disconnect. she's painted when he is not... this is before they meet/ as they meet. then, they are painted at the same time, this is the relationship. then, it concludes with him painted, and her not, as the relationship ends. if they were both naked at the beginning, none of the rest of it would make any sense as that would imply they were together on some level then. just cause you can't see it doesn't make it so. do you need everything spelled out for you, or do you have any deductive reasoning skills, lol?

You hurt for them, not necessarily one over the other once. Your ready to be on his side and then she comes in and you have that moment where you remember that break ups are complicated and both people have broken hearts. Fantastic song. On a lighter note there’s a parody of this song “Some Precious that I used to Know” done by a guy singing as Gollum from the Lord of the Ring/Hobbit. 😂 it’s so funny 😂

Gotye has so many great songs; Smoke and Mirror, Heart's a Mess, State of the Art, Eyes wide open, and An Easy way out. You really can't miss with them, though the aren't really a band anymore. Kimbra has some good songs too, though I'm not the biggest fan of hers. Though it is because I haven't found a song that just hits a mood, but she very is talented. Just haven't found a song of hers I could loop for hours. As for this song, I had a couple of different takes on the song throughout time as I listen to it and heard other people's reactions. Like it's from one person's perspective, the relationship was toxic, but they young and were in love so they put up with more than they should have. With Kimbra's part being the older version angry at the other person and themselves wanting to move on. Most people seen it from the perspective of both sides of the break up. It gives the same vibe as The Airborne Toxic Event's song "Some time around midnight" as the feelings being triggered by seen an old love.
